Reasons for the Civil War in Skyrim.

I have not played through Skyrim yet, but did recently side with the Stormcloaks in their struggle against the Empire, as I escaped with the Jarl to Riverwood instead of the Imperial choice. But what happened? What is the reason for the civil war?
