My 10 Reasons why Oblivion was better than Skyrim

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 11:03 pm

Im currently lvl 37 and 43 hours into the game, I have yet to complete the main quest and have only completed one faction. This is purely my opinion.

10.No Airborn Assaults.
You can no longer jump and swing, nor can you cast while jumping. I feel as if they buffed the combat system up so much they slacked on what the original system had.
Case and point.

That was hardly an important part of Oblivion's combat system.

9.[censored] Epic Guilds.
Who would want to swing an axe or cast a spell with one of the most dominating forces in Tamriel, when you could study the art of flute playing or go to the 4-year version of hogwartz?
The mages and fighters guilds are in all games for one reason. They are badass. I feel the factions in skyrim were a little limp. The best one imo turns out to be the companions which I won't spoil.

I can agree with this.

8.HAHA MIND CONTROL.
Where the [censored] is Mysticism?

Wait, did you just imply that enemy behavior effecting spells were mysticism? If so, they are not, those have ALWAYS been in illusion. That being said, I do miss mysticism.

7.Immigration Rates.
Where are all the Argonians up to no good? Or those sneaky Kahjiit? Or the redguards swinging sword with their shields held high? One of the first things I noticed about skyrim is the lack of other raced npcs. Once again no spoilers, but their is a quest where you must gather the blood of every single race in the game. I wasn't able to complete it for almost 10 hours.

Nords don't appreciate foreigners, this fits lore.

6.Nothing but a sprained ankle.
Okay, theirs a 10 foot drop from this rock, to the bank of the river? No problem. *jumps* *Death on impact*
Fun times.

That's just nitpicking, how much damage you take when you fall makes a game for you?

5&4. Going Pro.
Athletics and Acrobatics have been removed from the elder scrolls game. That svcks, superbly.

Agreed.

3.Flying to new lows.
Dragons! [censored] yea! Oh wait, uhmm........only 3 swings from my ebony battle axe and a dual casted ice storm killed you? Heh, giants are more of a challenge, now I know why you went extinct.

Turn the difficulty to master and try out a Blood Dragon late game....

2.Who needs a whole book just take this scroll, you'll be fine.
There is a serious lack of spells in this game, their is also a serious lack of spell creation system. This is a big let down considering how epic those things were....and to see them go is doodoo.

Agreed.

Whenever I read an article proclaiming that Oblivion is better than anything, I can't help but giggle.

I'm glad you decided to make a new thread about the same played out complaints. There's about 100 other threads that you could have just replied "Agree." to and it would have gotten the same message across.

Snowflake syndrome I tells ya.

P.S. I also disagree with all of your complaints.

I think Oblivion had about 7 quests in it, not counting the guild ones.

15 hours into Skyrim my quest log is at around 40 already and everyone I talk to tries to give me more. I find myself constantly turning people away due to a combination of apathy and time constraints. I've got stuff to do. Deliver your own bag of wheat flour.

I want primary and secondary skills.

To my surprise, me too. I really like not worrying about multipliers, but I hate not being able to fool around with abilities because they'll cause my poor mage to level. The benefit of miscellaneous skills is being able to use them without penalty. And to add insult to injury, while making all skills count toward leveling, they removed the mage option to unlock via spell, so that I either have to use lockpicking or forego the contents of chests. Getting a set number of points to distribute as we will when we level is great. Many of the other changes are proving unfun to this player of mages.

The world is great, though. :D

Dumbing it down....would actually contain classes. Makes it easier for people to choose a character. So.....

People thinking that the removal of classes is dumbing the game down blows my mind.

"OMG more character development freedom!!?!?!? Way to streamline and dumb it down Bethseda!" :sadvaultboy:

10. Was this ever really all that important?

9.Well times change and those guilds are gone. It's been 200 years, and the Empire is on the verge of collapse.

8.Gone or folded into other areas because it was redundant.

7.Surprisingly races use to warm weather aren't that fond of the frigid air in Skyrim. This isn't Cyrodil the melting pot of the Empire.

6.Haven't had this problem. Yes you can't jump of a 50 foot cliff and expect to be okay ..... how dare they try to make it a little more realistic.

5&4. Yea those worthless stats are so missed in Skyrim. You shouldn't be rewarded for simply moving around or jumping up and down like a buffoon.

3.Dragons are a little weak yes but as much as they show up would you really want them to be that strong. Push the difficulty up and stop spamming your skills, let them evolve naturally and the game will be the way Bethesda intended it.

2. The eight million different spell possibilities where cut down on yes. They optimized them so they wouldn't have to focus on it so much. There are still enough spells to keep me entertained.

1. So yea it hasn't come out yet be patient.

Yeah I agree. I want some epic Jumpin swingin action!
9.[censored] Epic Guilds.

yeah Agreed as well...the only 'guilds' they kept is Dark brotherhood and Thieves Guild. BOOOOOO. Imperial Legion being back was nice though. But that's about it.
8.HAHA MIND CONTROL.
Where the [censored] is Mysticism?

Umm..Never used magicka enough in Oblivion to care.
7.Immigration Rates.
Where are all the Argonians up to no good? Or those sneaky Kahjiit? Or the redguards swinging sword with their shields held high? Agreed. There are Argonians, but they are just more annoyingly 'there'. Rather have no Argonians then just have useless ones just sitting there for no reason. Same for Khajiit
6.Nothing but a sprained ankle.
Okay, theirs a 10 foot drop from this rock, to the bank of the river? No problem. *jumps* *Death on impact*
Fun times.
Umm...Wasn't sure where you were getting at here.
5&4. Going Pro.
Athletics and Acrobatics have been removed from the elder scrolls game. That svcks, superbly.
Remove Acrobatics? Meh...Sure would like to jump higher so i could GET UP THESE DARN CLIFFS!
Remove Athletics? Uhrr....thats why we have Sprint and Stamina to increase.

3.Flying to new lows.
Dragons! [censored] yea! Oh wait, uhmm........only 3 swings from my ebony battle axe and a dual casted ice storm killed you? Heh, giants are more of a challenge, now I know why you went extinct.
Turn teh difficulty u- wait...hmm...yeah they are pretty easy, but also kind of powerful. Idk. Depends on how you fight them, where you fight them.
2.Who needs a whole book just take this scroll, you'll be fine.

The only things I miss from Oblivion are-
- Paper doll on menu screen
- Quest Log from Oblivion (Skyrim misc quest list is a horrible mess)
- Spell making

I could also make a list of 100 things that Skyrim does miles better. There is no doubt it is a better game and grows on me day by day.

On the Immigration issue, I thought it as always a little convenient in Oblivion that each race had its own town. Especially without a language barrier, one of the main reasons groups of people stay together in a foreign country(the other being cultural differences) I can see a district in the main city, but not an entirely separate town for each race. Also its a long way from anywhere else, most of the khajiit will tell you they are only there for the trade, and the Nords are a little master racist.

Tbh, most of the OP's list is invalid imo. The only thing that was better in Oblivion was the inclusion of spell making imo and even then it just led to OMGZ LOOK AT MAH SPELL WHICH DOES 79004564 DAMAGE!!

Those are all worthy criticisms but pretty weak compared to a list of 10 reasons why skyrim was better than oblivion.

Biggest one that resonates with me is not being able to swing while jumping. DFA was very fun in Oblivion.

You cant move your arms while jumping in RL?

I prefer a fully modded Morrowind to both actually.
And im not saying Skyrim is bad by no means. It is definitely an epic game, worthy of GOTY and will most likely get it. I just think the game could have been alot better than it is.

This!! You red my mind or wait ... er i could have red your mind.

I really miss the map from oblivion. It felt like the charachter took up a map and looked at it. In skyrim its hard to get any useful info from the map.
