reasons why people dont care about spears

Post » Sun Oct 17, 2010 8:24 am

People learned the far edge of a spear's range, and just stayed in that range through constant running away. But it was a very specific range, which could only be used if you backed away from whatever enemy younwere fighting. In addition, spears were much rarer than other weapons and usually weaker.

So the classic backpedaling?

They ARE fixing that, so I don't see the problem...

Exactly! That's why there is no excuse anymore. All it would take is using the next couple months to do a little mo-cap and make a couple spear models, and we'd be set.

Would you want them in even if they were half baked like NV? Just curious.

I've never played NV, so I can't really say. What's half-baked for some person could be perfect for another.

You can't stab with them. Is that half baked perfect for you?

I'd be fine with throwing spears as an alternative to bows.

If I can't stab with them then I don't want them. I'd rather they not be in if they're going to insult me.

You could stab (if you knew the move) and slash with spears in Dead Money/NV.

But spears can be thrown . . . It's not half-doing it if they are speciically designed to be an alternative to bows (maybe more powerful but heavier and with less range).

The DLC added melee spears, although if they could only add ranged spears into Skyrim, Id be fine with that. Plenty of builds I could make that revolve around that type of gameplay.

How is stabbing and thrusting someone beating them with a stick? How is slashing someone beating them with a stick? did you even read my post?

Why is Bethesda so married to chopping an unbalanced mechanic instead of balancing it? Even worse, why do so many people support that?

That's just their thing I suppose: "If at first you don't succeed...trash the whole system and start again from scratch. And if the new system doesn't succeed first time out of the box- trash that one too. Surely sooner or later we'll develop a perfect, functioning system in one try thus saving us all that annoying time spent tweaking and adjusting, right?"

Don't understand it myself, seems pretty inefficient to me.

How do you "slash" someone with a pointy stick?

How do you keep missing stab and thrust?

I'm not.
I never commented on either of those?
Its quiet obvious that is how you would use a spear. But "slashing" with one is little more the hitting your opponent with a stick.

I honestly didn't think that needed an explanation.

But its not, slashing someone with an edged spear would do damage. A quick swipe to an unarmored abdomen could easily spill guts. hitting someone with a stick wont however. I dont see why your so hung up on slashing though when you could thrust?

Spears were one of the first weapons ever and they've been used by cultures all over the world. There's already a precedent for spears in the TES universe, so it makes no sense that they shouldn't be there, especially in the brutal home of men. People in skyrim can't put a pointy piece of metal on a stick? They can't even sharpen a stick? High tech stuff there. http://christophersisk.com/2008/04/28/orangutan-spear-hunter/

Spears are stupid? So are clubs. And battle axes. And war hammers. Let's just have magic and swords.

I'm not getting hung up on anything, I made a comment about a singular aspect of the weapon. Frankly I think people need to differentiate between spears, pole axes, Halberds etc etc.
All vastly different weapons.

A spear is a sharp stick.

A spear is also a stick with a double edged blade on its end. A weapon that would do more damage if slashed than a normal stick would.

'bout as close as I can see to being a useful full slashing weapon.
Even still its made redundant by a long sword.
