Recommend Me Mods: Primarily GUI + Graphics + Patches?

Post » Mon Jan 26, 2015 8:16 am

Hello there! I'm just about wrapping up my extensive Skyrim playthrough...I got a few hours of Oblivion in before, but stopped after muscle memory control problems alone killed me in Skyrim (it involved me accidentally turning into a Vampire Lord and then using Bats off a cliff, instantly dying). Now that I'm about to switch to Oblivion full time...

Are there any mods that completely overhaul the GUI? I'm honestly not that fond of Oblivion's GUI (especially the lower part of the screen...click[map, long animation]...click[quests]...click[active quests]...GYAAAAH). A way to set multiple active quests would be cool too.

Are there mods that make the game prettier? Primarily the human models? I find the human models in this game unnerving. But a general touchup of the graphics would be nice too.

Is there an Unofficial Patch mod for Oblivion like there is for Skyrim? You know...Bethesda and their wonderful bugs.

I'm unsure if I'm committing a faux pas by making a topic like this...I apologize if I'm causing any trouble. Thank you in advance!

You're not making any egregious errors in making this topic, and you did the right thing by being good and specific.

I'm feeling really lazy right now, so I'm sorry that I'm not giving you links like I typically would, but you can find everything you're asking about on the Oblivion Nexus. There are unofficial patches for Oblivion, Shivering Isles, and the smaller DLCs like Knights of the Nine or the Fighter's Stronghold are included in one "Unofficial Official Mods Patch" as I recall. There's an entire UI category on the Nexus; I can tell you that DarnUI is great, although I don't think there is an overhaul that does exactly what you want. The F1 through F4 keys are hotkeys to specific menus, though (Stats, Inventory, Magic, and Journal, in that order), if that helps. And for better looking human models, try Oblivion Character Overhaul v2 for faces, and body mods of your choice. For other textures, look into "Qarl's Texture Pack Redimized" - that's not the exact name, but Qarl's texture pack is pretty comprehensive, and really great.

Modding Oblivion is a bit less intuitive than modding Skyrim, so whatever you install I insist that you read through the installation instructions carefully and follow them exactly. It's much better to ask questions before installation (and look to make sure someone didn't ask them first) than to screw up an installation and ask for help then.

Adding to what Box Maaan mentioned above, I would recommend HUD Bars by TheNiceOne (in fact all mods made by TNO). It gives you the ability to customize stat bars on the screen i.e you can customize how health bar would look like etc. I would refrain from adding too many HD textures because the game is not designed for it. It will start to crawl especially if you add other large mods i.e Unique Landscapes, Better Cities etc etc. There are also good alternatives to QTP3 without changing the vanilla feeling of game all available at Nexus.

Before you go any farther, be sure to have the game installed outside C:\programs (I'll assume you know this already because you played Skyrim  ). And then there's a matter of choice on mod managing utility which there are several choices. If you are going to just play the game without adding too many mods, OBMM might work out for you. However, if you are planning on adding or want to overhaul the entire game, Wrye Bash should be the mod manager of the choice. I would recommend not even bother with Nexus Mod Manager and although it is a new software that came out few years back it was not specifically designed for Oblivion so just leave that alone.

Wlelcome to the Oblivion Mod Community where you would spend more time modding than playing. Most important of all... have fun no matter what you decide to do.
