Recommend me some DS games

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:24 am

I haven't played my DS in forever, but I'm now thinking about getting a 3DS to upgrade and finally get back in the loop of handheld gaming. The thing is I have no idea what games to get. I'd like some games that are deeper than just average time killers, but I'm not huge on JRPG's with overly complicated plots and drama. Final Fantasy games are alright though.

Any suggestions? Thanks! :)

A few of my favorites are Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Kirby Canvas Curse, New Super Mario Bros, Meteos, Geometry Wars Galaxies, FFIII, and of course any Pokemon game if you are in the mood for it.

Some of these may be closer to "time wasters" than you'd like, but worth checking out:

Okamiden
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series
Ghost Trick
Elite Beat Agents
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Professor Layton series
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black/White

As for JRPGs, there are a few options without overly complicated stories:

Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Chrono Trigger (as long as you don't look into how it ties into Chrono Cross :P)
Dragon Quest IX

Edit- Moar (with some stories and drama):

Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
Radiant Historia
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI
Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light

Metal Gear Solid, alone, is temptation to get the 3DS.

Agreed, that coupled with OoT, Resident Evil and Splinter Cell are making my mouth water.

I'm really wanting to catch up on the years I've missed when it comes to DS games too.

Are the Kingdom Hearts games any good?

Love 'em, easily in my top 5 series, but they're the definition of drama and unnecessarily complex storytelling. 358/2 Days on the DS tries to be worthwhile as a standalone title, but being familiar with the other games is ideal.

I have never really cared for them honestly...too kiddie for my tastes, but the majority of my friends thought they were great.

Yup but I can see why when they have been making DS2 for a few years.

Not sure if your asking for good ds or 3ds games. I'll just throw out some of both.

DS

- The World Ends With You
- Dragon Quest 9 - Sentinels of the Starry Sky
- Final fantasy 4
- Zelda: Spirit Tracks
- Advanced war series
- Chrono Trigger
- Scribblenauts series

3ds

- Sims 3
- Super Street Fighter 4
- Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
- Rayman 3d

There aren't that many great games for the 3ds right now. Many are coming soon. As for what you said earlier, it is a given that the system will soon be flooded by games from Square Enix. I for one can't wait for some major titles from Atlus. One of the only developers that actually make jrpgs I really enjoy. Though square enix does have some good ones. The World Ends with you is one of my favorite games for the system.

Chrono Trigger was the best JRPG I've ever played. I (tend to) hate JRPGs, and even I liked it.

Also, you can't go wrong with Pokemon.

Pokemon games are always good. I don't think one of their flagship games actually CAN be bad, but I've only played Platinum and HeartGold this generation, and of the two HeartGold is my favorite.

I'd actually hold off on White/Black until they release some kind of Grey that's better than both of them. :P

You can't go wrong with any of the Pokemon games. If you want the newest, then get either Black or White.

I did like soulsilver and heartgold better than platinum, but I think that was just nostalgia that made them so much better.
