Recommend a turn-based strategy game

Post » Thu Nov 18, 2010 11:35 am

I'm interested in trying a tbs game, but I don't know enough about the genre to know where to start. I want something like Civilization where you're a country and you have to use war, the economy, and so on in order to gain control of the game world. I have no preference in terms of where it's set or what time period, but I think I'd prefer it to be in the real world, and at a more modern (i.e. the last few centuries) time period. When you recommend a game, I'd appreciate if you gave a few reasons why you're recommending it. Oh, and I'll be playing on the PC.

I'm not aware of any modern 4x (turn based game type you're looking for) games, other than the Civilization series, Civ 5 is new. If you want to go into the medieval period, Medieval II: Total War is amazing. It's got diplomacy, war, religion, ect. and it's all done from a world map until you actually fight the battles. There are some pretty good mods for it too, like Stainless Steel and Third Age (think Tolkien). Actually, the entire Total War series is worth buying at some point if you enjoy those types of games.

Sins of a Solar Empire is 4x, but it's all done in real time, and is also definitely worth trying,

Edit.

Empire: Total War is going to be the closest time period to the present.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/ is from 1994, but it's still my favorite strategy game of all time, and it takes place in the present real world, although during an alien invasion :P

You will have to protect the world countries from aliens, so they will keep funding you, so you can spend money on building bases, weapons and researching alien technology.

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/master_of_magic and http://www.impulsedriven.com/elemental are worth trying too, but are obviously not particulary real with all the magic and stuff going on! If you look up Elemental: War of Magic, you will see a lot of poor reviews though, but the game has been patched a lot since then and is now very much worth playing.

Also, if you want to play some really "hardcoe" strategy games which are based on real history, try http://www.impulsedriven.com/eu3 and other games from Paradox Interactive.

They make some very good games but they are not turn-based. They are pausable real-time games. I can't think of anything besides the Civ series, I did just wake up and haven't had any caffeine yet though. :snoring: Most of the turn based games I can think of are war games, there isn't much political maneuvering to be done as the war has already started when you step in.

I'll give it a think at work.

X-COM. The '94 game. Couldn't believe how bloody awesome it was, and I don't even like strategy games. This and Jagged Alliance 2 are the exception.

you might want to check out Anno 1401 as well, it's less combat and more economy orientated but it has a lot of charm and is quite absorbing.

The Venetian expansion adds a few more options as well.

EDIT, never mind, its not turn based, apologies, but it still might be your bag..

As I said in other posts for people who want a great TBS game. Masters of Orion I and II. The 3rd version I wouldn't recomend untill playing the first 2. MOO the first one is great, simple but so much to do. You research 6 different techs at the same time, there is a spy game, building a planet is really simple but the game play is so much fun. Moo II builds up on it, more of Civ in Space, and so far I haven't really seen anyone beat MOO II for TBS Space combat.
