Skyrim is coming, and I'm getting all hyped up and interested in playing an Elder Scrolls game again. First I thought of Oblivion (finally finish Fighters and Mages Guild for example), but then all the annoying little details came back to memory. So I installed Nehrim. Only to find out that while it's a great game, it's more like "Gothic 3 as it should have been". It's not an Elder Scrolls game.
So... I turn to Morrowind once more. However there are a couple of problems I have with the game nowadays, simply because I've played it for so long. I've played it so many times that I know every exploit, every interesting location and each guild's storyline and quests by heart. And the gameplay is tiring for me, because I did it so many times now. Stealing all there is to steal... selling it by bartering with the merchant until his disposition reaches 0... solving the mystery of the dead tax collector, stealing Fargoth's junk... making a detour to Pelagiad on the way to Balmora. And so on.
I imagine the following types of mods would help me enjoy the game again:
1) Mods that make the game more fast-paced, kind of streamlined even.
Think Oblivion- or Fallout-style mods. I already know of the combat mods in this area, but maybe there's something for pickpocketing, sneaking, persuasion and trade as well? What about the crime system (mods that only give you a bounty if you leave witnesses)? Or the Taunt-exploit: I don't want to Taunt someone 100 times just to get him to attack me, but I also don't want to rely on spells for doing it the legal way. So maybe there's a mod that offers an easier solution for this?
A fixed disposition for NPCs based on my Speechcraft and Personality would be nice too, where the only way of increasing it is temporarily with bribes. Same with bartering - basically, I don't want to do it (anymore). In Fallout 3 your effectiveness in bartering was calculated from your skill directly, and you could just concentrate on selling your huge amounts of items without calculating which price you should ask for.
2) Mods that add a lot of alternatives to the vanilla quests in the guilds.
Frankly, I don't care so much about new side quests, and I regard most of the quest mods not connected to the established factions or characters of Morrowind as such. Mods that expand the vanilla guilds however would be greatly appreciated. I know of Rise of House Telvanni, and I'll use it in my next playthrough, but I'm actually more of a Hlaalu guy, and I always thought that the Lord of Suran would make a great questgiver (since there's a rivalry between him and the lady in Balmora, and the storyline forces you to side with the Balmora lady mostly, and he is left a side character despite of his great potential).
Since I know each and every questline in Morrowind, I need a lot of alternatives. For example, quests for Galbedir in the Balmora Mages Guild. A joinable Legion garrison in a town other than Gnisis. New objects of interest for the Thieves Guild, and correspondingly new questgivers.
3) Mods that change the layout of vanilla places to create a new experience.
Okay, so I'm a thief. I can't help myself and it's horribly one-sided playing style, but that's just what I enjoy most. However, when I already know where the best items can be found and when I can easily find my way through a large building that my character has never been to before, that poses a problem, and I stop enjoying my robberies. (Also when I am clearly breaking into someone's house and they don't even care, but that's a different subject.)
Mods that change the interiors of buildings would be really great. I have no idea if any exist, and for what reason they would have been created (because it probably won't be my reason of "I just want a bit of a new experience"). But some places actually do have suboptimal interior design, so maybe someone decided to improve them?
I know these requests are horribly specific. The thing is that I actually know the mods that are out there pretty well, but some always manage to slip past my radar. So I'm asking for things that I think could have been done - mods that I find likely to come into being over the course of 9 years of modding.
But maybe I'm wrong, and I'm actually looking for something else without knowing. If anyone here can relate to my story about how I perceive the game nowadays, and thinks that he/she has a better solution to the problem, then please: Speak up! I'm very open to suggestions. Anything to make me enjoy Morrowind again like I did 9 years ago.
(I expect this to be one of those "zero replies because too specific" threads, or maybe one of those "gosh not another mod recommendations thread" threads. But I guess I just have to try it and hope for the best.)
