Recommended mods to go with SDR

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 5:09 pm

Hello all,

Now that development on my SDR mod is winding down, I'm (finally) putting together my own load order to have my first run through of the game since I started working on the SDR project almost a year ago. March 1st will be the anniversary, and also the cut off point for all further development, as it's time to move on, and actually play the darn game.

I'm looking for recommendations of any mods, especially stealth related, that go well with SDR, as well as any particular settings you used to tweak the mods so that they would work well together. Pretty much any recommendations that help enhance the stealth experience, including stealth driven quests, etc. would be great - Dark Brotherhood Chronicles for example.

It's also not just for me, but also for the SDR web-site in the mod compatibility and recommendations section, which I feel is a bit sparse, and could use some more suggestions.

I gotta run to work, but I'll post my current load order later so that you all know what I'm currently working with.

Hmm, I'm not sure what to add other than taking a survey of Running4Cover's List: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1093197-running4covers-list-of-stealth-mods-2nd-thread/page__fromsearch__1

Off the top of my head, I'd recommend Scrugg's Thieves Arsenal. It not only has nice tools but also some missions that require you to pretty much sneak to get the required items and no killing.

And then there's my mod, Stealth Wars, which actually has NPCs that hunt you down and sneaking to get to you. It should be compatible with your mod. I think the original idea I had behind the initial attack will be lost though. In other words, they'll be sneaking up to you until they get within combat range to attack. At that point, they obviously stop sneaking and rush you. The mods I originally recommended kept the alpha shades on the NPCs low for a few seconds after they started their attacks. Anyways, I'd actually like to know how well it'll play with SDR. I haven't yet tested them together. Keep in mind that Stealth Wars is intended for high level play.

EDIT: Holy cow! I must've had a really bad off-day for my grammar skills.

I'm currently putting together a load order built around T.I.E., Duke Patrick's melee, archery, and combat magic mods, and SDR. (For the first time ever, I was actually killed by the two rats at the beginning of the tutorial. Ha!) I'll be sure to drop in and let you know how it goes. (Oh, and plus Oblivion XP)

You should use only the SI version. And better to load Duke Patrick's mods after Bashed Patch.

Looking to enhance sneaking capabilities without changing the game much so that it's portable across any assassin, sneak and thief mod?
Detect LIfe and Night-eye Shader mod: http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=36407
Caveat: It's one of my mods, so am biased towards it.

What is that Thieves Arsenal Patch you got there Saebel?

Also, doesn't Better Dungeons conflict with several big mods, such as Kragneir's Death Quest?

...Also, I edited my first post: had a really bad off day for grammar. Sorry about that.

Better Dungeons doesn't conflict with any major mods - I made sure of that myself. I know for a fact that it's compatible with FCOM, KDQ, TAS, and StarX VVR.

I'm surprised you don't have Cava Obscura, saebel. :D

Also, you should try Immersive Caves (removes those stupid doors from the cave entrances).

Better Dungeons looks pretty awesome. Assuming it works with Cava Obscura, is there a recommended install order? Or let BOSS handle conflicts in the load order?

Hmm, according to the latest post on TESNexus on the comment section, there's 3 conflicts with KDQ that's been reported. And what about OWC-ND (I'd consider that a major mod)?

But yeah, BD does looks pretty awesome. Doesn't it already reduce lighting in dungeons though? Why would you need Cava Obscura if it does?

Better Dungeons is great. It works fine with Cava Obscura - it doesn't really touch the lighting levels (which cava does) just removes some of the ambient light sources. Best let BOSS handle the load order and tags.

I'll add a few suggestions for you based on your load order, but a lot of it comes down to personal preference:

Several of kuertee's mods. Notably, Battle Fatigue and Injuries works well with SDR. If you manage to wound an enemy without killing them, sometimes they get confused (I guess?) and lose track of you. Of course, with TIE, it could make it really tough on a low level character, as you'll be getting hurt a lot in the beginning. I also prefer his Horse Commands instead of MD Saddle bags (saddle bags are included, as well as other good stuff for keeping track of and controlling your horse).

I liked SoT Holidays, but at least for me if was buggy running it with Enhanced Economy. It adds a spell every time you activate a container (including corpses, merchants, etc) on the holidays. I got some weird game behavior (hangs and crashes in the worst cases, but fairly random) during those times so I stopped using it. Just a heads up in case you experience anything similar.

Also, Auto Update Leveled Items and Spells http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39635 is an alternative to Quest Award Leveller that seems to work better.

I think you've already got HUD Status Bars - that's a must. You should also either turn music off, or add Immersive Combat Music http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=23545 so you don't know when something has spotted you and is charging up from behind.

I tend to use Conduit Magic with my stealthy archer-type characters. That and lots of alchemy. There are several good alchemy mods; Alchemy Advanced seems to be quite good. Cobl adds lots of ingredients good for poison-making among other things, if you like. So does my Skyrim Ingredients mod.

Also, you're using Visually Realistic Lava, which is very nice. If you're not using liquid water, I'd recommend Realistic Water http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=37794, plus these blur shaders http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=23372. They go together quite nicely.

Good suggestions/information. I'll check them out.

HUD status bars are awesome. I actually have a suggested settings preference on the SDR website for the sneak icon. It doesn't give away when you are detected, only changing color depending on how much light is hitting you, and it is tucked away at the bottome left of the screen now, so it is much less obtrusive.

I have turned off music altogether and find it much more immersive. I got annoyed with music cues letting me know when I was in or out of combat before I knew I was in or out of combat. Get surprise attacked from behind is so much more fun. :)

There is also Thieves Arsenal esp version without water arrows light triggers somewhere. As far as I can remember this mod alters only vanilla lights manually in cells so they can be turned off, and it doesn't work well with mods. So someone patched esp without those changes. I have it installed, but I don't remember where I got it, and I'm not sure whether it is needed either. Perhaps someone can shred a light on this isssue?

Yeah, I remember that. I skipped it because I don't use the water arrows anyways. Don't they make it so that the lights never come back on? In other words, once you water arrow a light, you'll never see it lit again.

Thanks for the recommendations of my mods, dreamed1! I appreciate it!
However, Battle fatigue and injuries do not affect their alert levels towards the PC. It could a consequence of the mod. If so, it was unintentional. The mod simply adds Attribute penalties if the actor receives a large amount of damage in a short time.

Thanks for the recommendations of my mods, dreamed1! I appreciate it!

SDR creates penalties to detection based on health and fatigue levels. So I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I could, theoretically, tap into your mod (or visa versa), so that there could be specific consequences.

Hmm, according to the latest post on TESNexus on the comment section, there's 3 conflicts with KDQ that's been reported. And what about OWC-ND (I'd consider that a major mod)?
KDQ places items in those caves, but there are no conflicts. I checked myself in both TES4Edit and in game - I didn't find anything.

As for OWC... I can't say, because I don't use it. I've only tested against the mods I use - FCOM, over a dozen quest mods, etc. As long as OWC doesn't add to or alter the caves, it'll be fine - BD doesn't touch levelled lists.

I have turned off music altogether and find it much more immersive. I got annoyed with music cues letting me know when I was in or out of combat before I knew I was in or out of combat. Get surprise attacked from behind is so much more fun.
Heh. I use Musical Immersion myself - the battle music doesn't come on until *you* know you're in combat. Or, you could just remove/rename the Battle folder and keep the rest of the music... I find some quiet, moody dungeon music is great for when you're creeping through the dark. :D

But yeah, BD does looks pretty awesome. Doesn't it already reduce lighting in dungeons though? Why would you need Cava Obscura if it does?
Please name those conflicts ... not clear if you mean with BD or KDQ.

On topic--------------
Here is are a few that may be worth looking at:
http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=25335 - summons sneak when you do.
http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=28292 - these spells now play well with sneaking.

Nice! Since SDR doesn't unnaturally boost Sneak skills anymore, these mods will work great with it.
