Record companies are suing Limewire for a mind boggling 75 T

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:45 pm

I'm not kidding, http://www.law.com/jsp/cc/PubArticleCC.jsp?id=1202486102650&Manhattan_Federal_Judge_Kimba_Wood_Calls_Record_Companies_Request_for__Trillion_in_Damages_Absurd_in_Lime_Wire_Copyright_Case

"Baio, who is scheduled to represent Lime Wire when the damages trial begins on May 2, joked that the money that the record companies sought from his client would be better spent on paying for health care or wiping out the national debt. "

Wow, I do not even know what to say. This is so insane that even Doctor Evil wouldn't call out such a ridiculously high amount of money in exchange for not destroying the entire world. But some worthless arrangements of electrons on a disk that with the correct equipment can be translated into sound waves that may or may not be artistically pleasing to the human brain is worth more then the entire world?!! I am speechless.

Woah :bonk:

I like how all their music they apparently lost money on is apparently worth ten times more money than currently exists. There is no physical way anyone in the world could have lost them that much money because there is no physical way that they could have GOTTEN that much money had the music not been pirated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_gdp; I conclude that record companies are completely nuts.

Thirteen trillion more than the worlds combined GDP? Really?

Boy, who would have ever seen this coming with the music industry's total lack of precedent in demanding unreasonably huge sums of money.

Perhaps they're hoping to haggle. S'good to start high. lol :D

Music industry makes about fifty billion a year, right? Maybe they're making a prediction of how much they'd lose if P2P services were around long enough to really chip into their coffers... like... (in the voice of Doctor Evil) one hundred million yeeeears. Mua ha ha ha ha ha!

Its obvious that they only want to shut it down..... and I agree. Not with the sum but with the fact that people have no right to think that they deserve free music, or free anything that someone else creates for that matter, unless of coarse they are giving it away for free.

Somewhere, sometime, a CEO saw this figure and immediately went into a 30 day medical-vacation-coma-leave.

Nobody has that much money.

Unless you're talking Zimbabwean dollars, in which case just about everyone has that much money -- including the poverty struck areas :P.

Perhaps they're hoping to haggle. S'good to start high. lol :D

That is highly likely.

It seems unfair to me that the filesharing programs are what keeps getting targeted, though. As far as I know P2P is not illegal, and they can't individually check everyone's uploads to make sure nothing illegal is in there. It seems like suing a car company because bank robbers used one of their products for the getaway.

It seems like the sort of thing where they sue them for an astronomical amount of money, the like of which they know they can never get so they have room to slowly bring it down as things proceed. The likelihood that this will even hit in the billions is unlikely. That is if they even get anything substantial at all. Let's see what happens.

I agree, but 75, 000, 000, 000, 000?
I think that's a bit excessive. While I hate pirating, the Music industry is making itself looking like a bunch of tossers here.

Really? All the cool kids at school had a cry when it was shut down.
