[WIPz] Recovering Wasteland

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:59 am

I was unhappy with the gree mods out their with their giant trees and single type of grass. So I have started making my own.
I will be seeing if I can get the 'Tree LOD' created for this so they don't just pop out of nowhere when you get close.

I have replaced the 'undergrowth' with a Myrtle bush.
And the Shrub with a bamboo tree.
Both are smaller, perfect for a recovering wasteland.

I also made my own grasses texture to give it some more variety and color.

So, what do you think?

That looks really nice! I've tried nearly every tree mod out there and haven't found one I'm satisfied with yet. Either there are too many trees and I keep dying because I can't get to what is trying to eat me or the trees just look bad. Your trees are very pretty and the different colors of grass are much more realistic :)

I'm with Ghouls on this one. Every other tree mod I've seen has just been way too many trees trees in the wasteland. As much as I have enjoyed Green Grass of Home, even that has been leaving me with desiring a little something more. It is looking like this mod may accomplish what I have been wanting for almost two years now.

Looking forward to seeing more of this.

I am searching for the tree canopy shadow section so I can set the texture for the shadow. But I cant seem to find it. I am sure I saw it before though...

Recreating the tree lod was easy, but since these are small, I am not sure they will render, but I will see.

WilleSea,

those pics are lovely. What I especially like about them is the mix of colors (greens, yellows, oranges and browns together) and textures of the grass and trees and that there are still dead trees mixed in.

Yes, I wanted to preserve the color mix in the grasses. The trees I am using are smaller than in other mods I have seen which cuts down on the 'blocking' effect the bigger trees do.

I can't seem to find where tree canopy shadows are set, but I guess thats alright since the trees are so small anyway.

The tree LOD did not do anything, so I guess this mod is probably ready for release. I will play with it a bit more just to make sure everything is okay.

It looks really good. The colour balance is natural and believable. Nice work. Too bad about the LOD though.

Likewise. This one looks very good though, just the kind of thing I've been hoping for. I'll be sure to try it out.

Yes! This is exactly what I wanted!

It would be good if there was regional variation - some areas greener/with more foliage than others.

I thought about doing a mod like this myself, took one look at the work involved and couldn't be bothered. I'm so glad you're making this. :)

When you consider that we're only dealing with a 15 km area, I don't see the point in this. There's not a lot of variation in an area that small, that would be more of a global thing rather than local. I think it looks fine just as it is, and I'm really looking forward to it's release.

Thanks for all the comments.

I am going to make a few versions of the tree types. I will replace the bit taller bamboo with a ficus bush which is much smaller and thinner. That way, you can choose the trees you want. I am mostly trying to keep this to very small trees since its a 'recovering' wasteland, not a green wasteland.

As for the amount of work, it only took a few hours. I simply replaced the sagebrush type bushes with the two tree types. In this way, it should be compatible with any mods land height changes as well.

A few versions of tree sets.

My favorite I think is set 1 for maximum visibility.

Hi,

Dropping by to check on how you're doing with this. I love what you've done so far with the Tree Versions, in fact I like all of them, but favor 2 and 4 cuz I do like bigger trees, but I really like the cactus one too. I can't wait to try it out the mod in the game. :)

Excellent! (EXCELLENT!)
I've been meaning to start an online journal set about two years after the MQ, wherein plant life is just starting to return to the Wasteland. This mod just so happens to be exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. :3
I love the variety and the fact that large plant life is understated for once, instead of looking like Oasis exploded all over DC.
Good work!

So what ever happened to this part, or are you just trying to tease us? :nono:

I am lazy.

I have to pull the pieces together in order to create a package for download. Perhaps I will work on that now.
I got sidetracked with my Levelers Chamber mod adding 'trackers' that you can drop on the ground or place on NPC's and they show up on your map as quest markers.

I can if you want, Willie. I'm at Tenpenny Tower on my way to The Pitt so I'll see quite a bit of the wasteland on my way there.

Okay, apparently there is a mod called Recovering Wasteland already. So I will rename this mod to Wasteland Recovery.

I will go ahead and upload it to the nexus.
