red main menu logo and loading screen

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 3:02 pm

for a change i can't cry that bethesda did a buggy game.. this is actually my fault. i was playing with the ugrid settings and after a while i thought i could squeeze some fps if i revert it back to default. so i loaded my quicksave, typed in these commands in console:

setini "ugridstoload:general" 5
saveini
refreshini

saved. quit the game. deleted the ini files and restarted the game. well, i guess i did something wrong, my saves got corrupted.. at first they would just crash when i tried to load them.. now they are fully corrupted.

FINE, i accepted my punishment for doing something i don't fully understand. went to an older save that works.. and that pretty much solved my issues. only problem is, the red logo remains! here are some pics:

the thing that annoys me the most is.. its my fault :(

Delete Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini in My Documents/My Games/Skyrim. Also delete Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini if present in the main Skyrim folder. Don't delete anything suffixed with _default.ini. Run the launcher and let it re-dectect your settings.

No don't do this unless you want to lose all your tweaks.

Here is the fix: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1280438-fix-red-skyrim-logo-on-begining-menu/page__p__19689385__hl__red%20dragon__fromsearch__1#entry19689385

The saveini command has been known to turn the logo red.

There is a long process to revert uGrids back to default once you have changed them, quoted from Nvidia Tweakguides: http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-tweak-guide
  • Start Skyrim and load up a saved game.
  • Use ALT+TAB to switch out of Skyrim and back to your Desktop.
  • Edit the Skyrim.ini file as normal, modifying the uGridsToLoad variable to the desired lower value. Save Skyrim.ini and close it.
  • Use ALT+TAB to switch back to Skyrim.
  • Open the Command Console using the tilde ~ key and type refreshini.
  • Save your game to a new save slot, and it should now have the correct new uGridsToLoad value.

In future you can change your ugrids safely by going to Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Skyrim.ini rather than use in-game commands. Don't forget to change your "uExterior Cell Buffer=xx" to the safe number for your uGrids (64 for Ugrids 7).

I mean, because you don't have to use the saveini command, which is the cause of red logo screen, thats the only reason I said its safe, if you used saveini anyway afterwards it doesn't matter

What didn't work? That fix above is to fix uGrids, not the red screen. The red screen is caused by something the saveini commmand adds to your ini that isn't there to begin with. Best way to get rid of that is to delete your .ini and let the game regen them.

The red screen is nothing to do with uGrids, you've got two seperate issues here. :ermm:

Hey lichy, I can't say for sure, but if you look http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/501700-skyrim-red-tinted-logo-and-loading/ its another guy with the same issue, maybe the replies will help you too. There could be some ini files in your Skyrim data folder too, created by saveini, which will need to be deleted. He doesn't clarify where that is so I can help there, if you didn't find it already its at Program Files x86/Steam/SteamApps/common/Skyrim/Data

Perhaps if you deleted your ini files already the issue is being caused by a rogue ini file in the data folder.

I got to go now, good luck I will check in tomorrow to see if you solved the problem. Take care!

phew! through sheer brilience i restored my saves so im back to my level :D thank god windows kept an old version that i could go to using properties. think i fixed the ugrid thing now.

all well ends well, thanks to all for their help.. gonna try to find out why the mod's ini made all this trouble.. since it made the red logo AND the crashes. i say this coz i tried to log back using the modified ugrid and it still crashed and now that i got rid of the mod's ini i could go back.

thanks again :)

It's not the "mod's.ini". the game engine made that .ini file, not some mod, even if it named like a mod. Trust me on this.

Hey Lichy, glad you sorted your issue

There is generally an argument over using the saveini command and the ini/inis created by it. Not everyone experiences problems it seems. I would recommend following the advice from the guy at tweakguides for editing your ini and making your game look nice. Everything he says is safe and works and he posts interactive screenshots that prove it and allow you to see the difference before you make the changes. http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-tweak-guide is his whole guide.

Once those using all the extra stuff from saveini that makes your ini grow from 5kb to 45kb do the same I may recommend that, but not before.

Not discounting that guide...but all that guide changes are INgame settings....I have tweaked much more...:) the settings i have changed do not show up in the Game settings..
I have disabled the Vanity camera...(well set it to one hour)good as disabled
Tweaked the Ram use
Thread use
many more settings are there to tweak...u grids, use HD cache, many more. (guess i just like the control of it all).
I was able to fix things (mouse on steroids in one direction) that otherwise was not fixable.

Is my game stable and fluent?....you betya...I rarely ever game less then 8 hour runs....yesterday was a 17 hour run. :) did about 10 quests.
Today, I woke up early and plan an even longer run. my longest straight session to date is...http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee72/camaro_69_327/Skyrim19_hours32Mins.png. Lovin the Game!!

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee72/camaro_69_327/TESV_2011_12_25_07_32_16_505.jpg...32 FPS Looks and runs great

But all this is up to the individual. I have been using & tweaking this "New" engine since Morrowind.

But again, people have confirmed that the RAM and Thread use make no difference under testing

(Including the guy at Nvidia Tweakguides)

Edit: I have added a few lines to the .ini myself. Lines to increase the bushiness of the grass, remove the glow caused by AA around weapons and arm in 1st person view, ugrids etc. But all I'm sayin is add, add , add, don't start with a load of stuff that you don't know what it does and may cause issues, just add stuff that you need.

Lichy states in the 1st post he doesn't understand what he's doing, if its the 1st time he's edited ini files etc then its best to do it the safe way ;)

Looking at this http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee72/camaro_69_327/Skyrim/Skyrimcoreusage.png of MY core usage I see more cores used then default...with default it only showed use on 2 cores. Now you can see use on all 8. some more then others but the difference is tremendous! Also took my CPU usage from 12- 18 % to what I see now as 25 - 40 %.

BUT I agree...the OP is new to this, so use the Safe method..Add to your INI. Don't use setting you don't know.

EDIT: and i forgot one of the most importaant changes...the MAP

Try to turn to this direction and get this close...
