Red Mountain quick digi painting

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 12:06 pm

Haven't been to the ES forums in a while, especially long time away from this subforum and the artistry thread

Did this about a month ago as landscape practice after some landscape studies. This is also helping me get a feel for how to depict red mountain for a possible upcoming series of personal illustrations detailing morrowind's history. Please ignore the awful placeholder figures in the foreground, Azura aparently doesn't have a shoulder -_-

Golly-gosh that is beautiful. That, my friends, is talent.

Are we going to end up with a picture of the Battle of Red Mountain, by any chance? :D

Thanks guys

Since Mucha's compositions during the Slav epic always contained a lot of figures I'll likely be combining the battle of red mountain with the ascension of the tribunal (not entirely sure yet though). I need to drop by the lore subforum before I get going on the series though, and I also don't know when I'll have time enough to start.

This isn't up at DA but my sig has a link to my da page if you're curious

I use photoshop (cs3) for all of my digital paintings, with an intuos4 large tablet.

How much did your tools cost? I am an artist but I only have realy used pencil and a few rare times paint as my mediums. I have always been interested in finding a better medium in the form of digital art programs?

$300-400? Please be much cheaper.

I've only owned two tablets in nearly six years; the first was a used intuos 2 large from ebay that lasted me four years, but I was awful to it so it could have likely lasted longer. it was $400. My current one (intuos4 large) was.... a bit more? $475 or something. The price may have went down.

Photoshop is tricky to price because of the different versions and what student discounts you might have. I'm still using cs3 (they haven't added really anything to help digital illustrators so there's no reason to upgrade for me) but usually you're looking at around $300 for it. you don't really NEED photoshop though, there are free options like GIMP and artrage (at least I think artrage is free) that'll do more or less the same thing.

The thing is, the medium doesn't make the man. Getting a tablet and using digital programs is only worth it if you're just about good enough to make the leap to colour. When i first got my tablet in summer of 2006 to properly "colour" some of my pencil drawings I realized with the first few images that I just didn't know enough about the basics in order to do it properly. Not even colour-wise, i'm talking anatomy, form, the real basics of just drawing. I took a year off from my new tablet and just focussed on pencil studies, then after that until now I've been doing digital studies as well as pencil studies. It's not what you have, but what you know. If you click the sketchbook link in my sig and go to the first page you can see where i began right after I got frustrated with my tablet.

Anyhow I hope that helps.

Hmm little too pricey atm. I am a student so I may be able to get some discounts. I have a little experience in digital mediums and color as well(painting and colored pencils that sort of thing). I took only one class for Digital Art as of yet because I am in that reeeeeaaaaallly uncomfortable part of college where I am trying to figure out just what I am going to do with myself in terms of a career.

I defininely need to improve my skills as I have been drawing less and less as the years have gone by and I dont like that. So that is why I was wondering. The Digital medium has shown me some incredible stuff that can be done with it so I am going to try and get as good as I can get with it.

I have nothing in color up but this is what I am capable of. Nothing great I know but I also have not polished the skill or taken much in term of formal learning in a very long time.

That's funny, because I started in college with police foundations, transitioned to a general arts certificate, then ended with a 3-year program in graphic design, halfway through which I realized I wanted to be an illustrator lol. If you wanted to go the cheap route you could always pick up a wacom bamboo that are a lot cheaper compared to the intuos line (maybe around $150? I haven't looked at them in a while) that along with a free program means instead of $700 you're instead paying just $150.

I defininely need to improve my skills as I have been drawing less and less as the years have gone by and I dont like that. So that is why I was wondering. The Digital medium has shown me some incredible stuff that can be done with it so I am going to try and get as good as I can get with it.

If you want to get better you need to be getting into observational studies all the time. You can read thehttp://rhineville.deviantart.com/journal/A-concise-guide-on-how-to-get-better-at-art-214181861 I wrote on DA, and you could always post your prograss in the critique forums at conceptart.org (that place helped so much for me)
