Red triangles

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:21 pm

I did abasic search for this topic before i created this thread so i apologize if its redundant. It is my hope and wish that for what ever reason the RED cheaters triangles will NOT be part of the game. I hated in OB that when you got a new quest all you had to do was walk towards the triangle. I believe that in order to make questing fun again in TES games that we, the players, will not be treated like lost puppys. I found it much more enjoyable to have an NPC questgiver point you in the right direction to find locations, rather than.. "OH NOES, my daughter was kidnapped by giants!!!, PLEASE, good sir knight, follow the red triangle and rescue her! I will reward you with gold circles!!"

Yeah I think a lot of people dislike the baby-waypoints. They make quests just WAY to brainless and dry. Most exploration should be done in attempts to solve quests not just because you feel like going for a walk for no apparent reason. Not to mention it removes the feeling of accomplishment and joy when you finally find the hidden cave entrance you were looking for ; )

The way I understand this: The HUD is still in the game, but only appears on screen when it has a purpose, such as during a battle to display health.

This is different than the compass markers. The compass, I understand, is making a return... but the extent of the quest markers is unknown.

I'm interested in how a feature built directly into the game itself, by the developers, is "cheating" (ie, breaking the rules of the game).

Just wondering.

Well, its not "cheating" if the devs put it in there, but my point is that it feels like they are giving away the locations as oppsed to making the charcter actually discover it on thier own. I think one way they could fix it is to give you the quest, but then you would need to go talk to people in the area and or bribe someone or intimidate the "red triangle locator" out of an NPC. At least make us work a little bit to find a location instead of just giving it away.

Ugh this reminded me of the horrible in my opinion "modern" health system that games tend to copy lately.

"Let's not use a simple health bar, let's hide the health from the player entirely and use a cheesy blood/cracked screen effect, and then have the health regenerate quickly when the player hides! For extra annoyanc... immersion, let's make a loud ringing sound and heartbeat effect, maybe even turning the screen fuzzy and black and white too!"

I will be so very disappointed if they bring that horrible monstrosity into Skyrim.

As to the topic obviously it's not cheating but people like to insult others to elevate their own opinions. It doesn't work for anyone except those that agree with them, of course. I think they should clearly have an option to disable that functionality in Skyrim. Considering they already said NPCs give directions based on how well they like you, I wouldn't worry bout it.

Actually the topic creator did, and the suggestion that it is just for "babies" was brought up too. But yeah it's personal opinion. I can understand the opposition to it (though not the silly attacks on others that like it).

I don't think you need worry, they've stated that the Health bar stays off screen until you need it... In other words, take damage. It then appears for as long as your hurt and disappears again when you reach full health and maintain it for a period of time.

The Compass is at the top of the screen from what I remember reading, don't ask me for the source, I don't remember it. Whether the compass has the ridiculous quest markers or not, I couldn't say.

I never really used the compass marker, IE I saw it there, but I just looked at my map to see where I was going because (im probably the only one...) I couldnt really follow the red triangle in OB, but I did in fallout... Though a compass might be nice in the game but no red pointer...

The reason I don't think people that hated the quest markers need to worry is that I'm pretty sure I read that NPCs do give directions to quest destinations. A specific example was an NPC walking to a nearby road with you and then pointing out the direction you need to travel while explaining where you go (which is how people give directions in real life).

Perhaps novice would be better then baby?

Seems most of the people who like it cut their teeth on Oblivion and have nothing to really compare it to. I'd say that makes them a "novice" to the Elder Scrolls series. Is novice less belittling perhaps?

It's one thing to have experience with and without quest markers and to say you like quest markers more. Its something else entirely to have only ever played with quest markers and so stubbornly stick to the only thing you know. - This isn't directed at you Zeopard, it's just in relation to your response.

I LOVE YOU!!!

Seriously though, I don't care how many times it has been mentioned.
This is one of the biggest flaws in the Oblivion and should be fixed ASAP (that and fast travel witch is something I'm working on and will try to make a suggestion that will make everyone happy).
Morrowind was beyond epic because you actually had to go into an adventure and had to use your brain in order to figure stuff out.
If they fix fast travel and that disgusting little pointer on the compass, I will personally make a ton of cookie pies and send them to them. ^_^
OK, I won't because I would probably eat them myself, but +1 to good will at least. :P

I like the idea of an option to just turn it off. Also i did not aim to hurt anyones feelers about calling it "cheating". GEEZ. People these days get butt-hurt too easily. haha

I believe the more option the developers can give the player the better. In other words, I think they should allow the player to toggle on/off the quest markers. As much as I hate to mention Fable (...ugh), I appreciate the option in Fable to turn off the quest bread crumb trail.

I agree it should be togglable... There are even times when I'm having trouble with a quest and could use the assistance, wouldn't mind toggle'n it on, seeing where I gotta go and then I can turn it off again. I just don't like it there constantly in my face making any attempt to solve the quest on my own and find my way on my own impossible.

I think the quest marker is gone, otherwise how could we possibly have "up to 20 active quests" at once?!
