Please, list more if you know any.

This is a general discussion for RedGuard thread to talk about anything RedGuard, except how to get it to run on your computer. :shifty:
This game is so different from other TES games, I mean really different. I think it deserves a general discussion thread.

I think despite being somewhat of a failure, watching clips of it you can see the beginning of what made Morrowind appealing. Instead of Daggerfalls endless procedural wilderness, you could walk to areas that were part of an existing world. I think it really does add that sense of adventure and action, which when mixed with the RPG elements it did not have, make the kind of game Morrowind was.

Sure. I'm a huge fan. I actually LOST a full day playing this game. I had a holiday vacation with nothing to do, and it occurred after the Christmas wherein I rec'd this game as a gift. I never played 24hrs straight, yet within 5 days, I thought it was Saturday and it was actually Sunday. Yeah.. I loved this game. Of course, since I haven't played it in 7 years or so.... (well, maybe not 7) I plan to go through the (apparently unmentionable) "how do I get it to run under XP" scenario someday, but right now, I'm back deep inside Daggerfall again..

I need to get my hands on a copy of Redguard. I know some sources (legitimate retailers with physical copies, of course), I just don't have the time. :P

But yes, Redguard was actually a turning point in The Elder Scrolls series. It was when Bethesda became aware of how much intrigue and detail they could put into a small, defined world and decided with Morrowind that it was time to switch to smaller scale projects like that.

I've got a copy. Played it for a while, but I just couldn't get into it. Also, the combat was pretty dang clunky. I don't know, maybe I'll give it another shot sometime, but I doubt it.

The opening clip was the thing in TES that brought me most into the amazing TES world, it's so athmospheric, and everything is cool and special, you get to see cultures and evrything, it really gives a feeling of a good world, and Dram is awesome, too bad he svcks.
I don't get why people love dragons so much.

Well, if some of you get to play RedGuard all the way through you might remember this famous speech:

Cautious I've thought you Basil, but never before a coward!
We all have waited for the princes return. Now that he has returned, you walk away. The form is different, ture. But his spirt is here, here. And isnt his spirt the truest part of him?
Did it occur that maybe he choose this shape and symbol as the sign of his intentions? Aye, perhaps that soul, in hated delay, snared helpless in a jewel while his men hid and shirked their duties his duty, perhaps that soul honed itself to this and by no mistake comes to you now in no more fine and final form at this, a sword. You say you cannot follow a sword well, I say that you have strayed from your own to long- why are you here but to fight? Your prince has shown you the manner of his purest mettle, aye in metal itself and this true unerring razors message is clear beyond words for now is not the time for words, but for brave hands, bright swords and blood. Aye boys, its about blood now to long frozen in your veins and youd rather yourself be ridgid than follow me, well, if you wont then shamefully know that your prince will. For his blood be solid too, but straightened to steel and tempered in death. Arise alike as he as swords as we are crowned alike as he!
The prince is dead, long live the prince!

My Amazon order of Redguard just came in, and I am thrilled by the manual alone, not to mention the "burnt by Bethesda" map. The artwork svcked me in immediately. Now comes the fun part of trying to jury-rig the game to run on XP. :P

Be wary of the controls sometimes they tend to be a little frustrating, but not all the time. Have fun! I hope you get it working. :)

Well, got the basics working. It's a little stuttery, and the intro videos have some graphical artefacts, but not bad for fifteen minutes of tinkering. I'll be in Hammerfell for the rest of the night, I think.

Could be, but with the taunting going on, I was enthralled from the first encounter with a guard.. It was like "Die by the Sword" all over again, but somehow even funnier.

I'll be getting a new copy of RedGuard soon. Its been tough to find but finally found one. I lost my original years back, I always wanted to play it again, and now hopefully when it arrives I'll be able to play it once more. For now though I'll play Daggerfall. :)

They've become rather cautious (a good thing) since their experiment with Redguard nearly took them out as a company. They'll announce TES:V when they are ready, and not a minute sooner.

Thatoneguy, you got your facts inaccurate on this one. For it was Daggerfall that almost bankrupt Bethesda, not RedGuard. That's why they more cautiously made games after Daggerfall. Here I think this will explain:

The reason I think they reduced the size they had originally planned for TES:III is that they were worried that what happened in Daggerfall would happen to Morrowind. That if they made a game too big they would most likley have crippling bugs and no one would hardly buy it. I mean they almost went bankrupt because of Daggerfall. Thats why they were so conservative with game world size in games after Daggerfall, excluding Oblivion. They decided it was better to have a more detailed and smaller world as an alternative for games with gigantic worlds, randomly generated cells, and less detail like Daggerfall. When they had a bigger team, more advanced technology, and confidence after Morrowind's success they thought they could make ES games bigger (but not as ridiculously big like Daggerfall) and detailed as well. Thus why Oblivion has a bigger game world than Morrowind.

I hope this clears things up. Anyway, this is my hypothesis and mine only. :)

Daggerfall sold quite well (700,000 copies which was a lot back then when gaming wasn't mainstream and the developer teams were noticeably smaller), Battlespire and Redguard didn't. And a year later bought by Zenimax. When they then developed Morrowind, pretty much their whole existance depended on that game, and it became a smash hit so they could continue to live.

redguard was brilliant, if gamesas could've ported it to the playstation, it would've been a breakthrough title. battlespire was a turd, and should've remained a daggerfall add-on.

I like Battlespire :( But yes, it would have been better as an expansion. Then someone could have haxx0red it and we could have had fun. See my signature for details ;)

Sorry my mistake, I must've read it wrong. Anyway I got my new copy of RedGuard today and have been playing it on Virtual PC (Windows 98) It runs well, but the fps is low, and I don't play it that much because of the fps sadly. :( I agree that it should've been ported on the Playstation. It might have sold better if they did that.

I thought the combat was a little clunky too, but it has such amazing potential if I could just get it to run right, to be awesome. For a fencer, based on reading the manual alone, Redguard's swordplay is like video game fencing training! :P

Sadly, I just can't get it to run properly on my desktop; sound won't work and I ain't playing without sound, dudes.

They actually worked on a PS2 port of it, but eventually dropped it to put more resources into Morrowind. It would have been damn awesome if they had finished that port.

I was wrong about Daggerfall and the bankruptcy of Bethesda. Here's the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_history_of_The_Elder_Scrolls_series. I have know idea how I interpreted like that. I was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_history_of_The_Elder_Scrolls_series however about Daggerfall making Beth choose to make smaller and more detailed games. Well, that's the end of that, there shouldn't be anymore posts about that. We need to stay on topic. :)

I always speculated this, but could never prove it. That the song the Dunmer pirate woman sings in Oblivion is in fact about Cyrus from RedGuard. Its on Wikipedia you can see it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_Adventures:_Redguard.
