No Redguard love?

Post » Thu Nov 04, 2010 5:07 am

Redguards are kind of boring, and TES Orcs have never really matched what I think Orcs should look like.

Redguards never struck me as boring. Quite the contrary, they had some of the coolest history, compared to the other human races.

For one, they don't share the same blood as the other races: they come from a completely different part of the world.

Their society fascinates me too, as it's an interesting balancing act between people trying to move their culture forward and others who are stuck in the militaristic lifestyle.

That, and the Nord nation borders Cyrodiil, High Rock, AND Skyrim.

In Skyrim I intend to play as a lighter-skinned Redguard Battlemage/Spellsword/something like that: Redguard father, Breton father, comes from the town of http://images.wikia.com/elderscrolls/images/2/2c/Nirn_Map.jpg near the High Rock and Skyrim borders ;)

In short, yeah man, plenty of others love the Redguard too. You're not alone :D

Is it just me, or am I the only one who personally always plays as them, or Orcs?

My first character will be one of these two. They are my favorites.

Redguards are cool. You're just jealous of their rugged good looks and natural athleticism. I do have to ask what you think orcs should look like, though. If you say "like the ones in Lineage" I'll be quite disappointed in you.

I don't limit myself to 1 or 2 races. I play as Nords, Imperials, Bretons, Altmer, Dunmer, Khajiits and Argonians. I don't play as Orcs, Bosmer and Redguards. You can probably understand why i don't want to play as a Bosmer. They are the laughing stock of every other race. I can't take them seriously. Orcs is just boring compared to the other races. As for Redguards it's because that when i choose to play as a human i often want to play as someone who looks atleast somewhat similar to myself (unless the character is female but that dosn't happen too often) so i mostly choose to play as Nords. I like the 10 current races however and have never understood why some people keep asking for more, i mean seriously, we have 10 unique races and you want more? What other WRPG developer gives you so many choices? I am just not interested in playing as all of them.

Eww, no.

Honestly, I'm struggling to think of a game that's done Orcs right. Most games tend to make them big, green and bulky as opposed to the Tolkien / Lord of the Rings style Orc. Even the Orcs in the Peter Jackson trilogy were a bit hit and miss, but they're still probably the best visual example I can think of.

In fact, thinking about it, http://images.wikia.com/elderscrolls/images/5/55/MW_Jiub.JPG in Morrowind is probably closer to my idea of how Orcs should look than the Orcs in TES games themselves.

All in all, Redguards are probably my favorite character race, and Orcs are undoubtedly in my top three or four, alongside Dunmer and Bretons.

Redguards are bros. Don't tell me that a dual-wielding redguard isn't totally badass.

Plus, they actually look good unlike most of the races. =/

I've always found there's a problem with Redguard depth. They were never really represented well in the game (similarly to Bosmer). Always shown as the "goody-good" race. Nothing morally grey. Book lore, of course, is completely different.

I'm assuming most have characters as an extension of themselves. Unless they want to look "cool" with an elf/beast, they'll play a human. Pretty sure most of us nerds are white.

I'm also pretty sure Bethesda are scared of being "racist". I mean, just look at how Resident Evil 5 got rants for having black zombies in Africa.

Personally, I love to play a Redguard outlaw. I think they work amazingly for it.

I love Redguards. Their lore is great, the whole swordmaster thing they have going on is very cool to me.
I also have really cool images of Yokuda in my mind. Sort of Persia, meets Babylon, meets African Villages. :D

Redguards don't interest me, nor do the beast races.

I prefer characters that resemble me.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. That could be an insult.

If you aren't insulting me: Yes, I know Orcs are humanoid and thus resemble me. What I meant was I am White. I prefer White characters.

Redguards cater for the Africa descendant players.

Most players of TES will undoubtedly be Caucasian. Therefore most that choose a human character will naturally be inclined to choose a character most identifiable with themselves.

Its the same way the majority of Africa descendants will be inclined to choose a redguard. If we lived in a world where the majority of Africans had the society & technology to own video games and where European & other Caucasian races didn't then the tables would be turned.

Yeah, that's why Argonians are the most popular race.
Damn lizard people in our world, ruining everything.

My Altmer always have a darker hue of skin, more brown than gold, and it is due in part to a trace of Redguard blood in their lineage. The Blue hair is due to Daedra genes.

I read a post where someone was complaining about Redgaurds being stereotyped as fighters not intellects, but there is ingame lore about Redguard swordsingers whose intellects were so great they could wield their weapons merely with the power of their thoughts.

I always had a nightmare getting a good skin tone with them in oblivion, although I think the character I finished the main quest with was a redguard (cant remember now) and my main daggerfall character was too.

Interesting fact, in America, more than 85% of black people have some Caucasian ancestery in thier lineage, due to the high frequency of interacial owner/slave relations during slavery. Prime example being President Thomas Jefferson, who fathered a several children with his slave Sally Hemming, beginning with a still birth when she was about 15.

Even more interesting, at least 60% of white Americans also have black ancestry, often that they are unaware of, as many very light skinned, mixed blacks assimilated into the larger white society intentionally allowing themselves to be mistaken for white due to the social benefits.

And, of course, taken to the point of origin, ALL human beings on Earth are of African decent, because that is where the first people migrated from.

Although I don't play Orcs, I am working on plans for a female Redguard character, however, not as the primary playthrough. The dragonborn concept will work well with the mysterious character I have in mind.
