Leaving technical issues aside, my short answer is no.

I found it to be fairly mediocre all around. The sound is awful and the voice-acting made me cringe. The graphics were dated at the time of its release but doesn't really matter for people playing it now I guess. In terms of gameplay, there wasn't much new there. Controls were annoying in combat and for the puzzles.

I would steer you towards something else unless you're a die-hard TES fan AND a die-hard action/adventure fan. I think Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire, Morrowind and Oblivion are all far superior to Redguard. And there a heaps of better non-TES action/adventure games available.

I've got no idea how much a copy would cost you, but I'm sure you could be playing something much more awesome for the same amount :>

Some people love it!

I'd only recommend it if you consider yourself quite the TES fan. It basically plays like a cross between Legend of Zelda and Tomb Raider, with the platforming of TR and the adventuring of LoZ, but beyond some entertaining characters and decent writing, it's nothing particularly special from a gaming-in-general stand-point. From a TES stand-point, however, it's quite an important game, it's where a large part of the new lore seen in Morrowind was introduced (including the Imperial race, IIRC), it's the only game to actually show a sload, it came with the first Pocket Guide to the Empire (granted, you can read that over on http://www.imperial-library.info/pge/, but then you don't get the pretty pictures Michael Kirkbride drew.), and the box has the only map of Yokuda shown so far on it. If you can get it cheap (eg, someone about 6 years back was selling a lot of unopened copies for $10US, which is how I got it) or if you want a bit of TES history, then go for it, but if you're looking for a high-quality game (even for the time, it wasn't that brilliant, good, but not brilliant.) that just happens to be set in the TES world, I'd say skip it. Same goes for Battlespire, in case you were considering it. Infact, I'd go so far to say that of the pre-Morrowind games, Daggerfall's probably the only one that can stand on its own merits, as opposed to just appealing to TES fans.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

The Elder Scrolls: Redguard was by far the most fleshed out Elder Scrolls world you will see in terms of faith to lore, character depth, detail and otherworldly feel. None of the other games even come close to a story as involved as this and for that, id highly recommend you play it.

Having said that, its a dated game. Its hard to get it working, and once you do the graphics are obviously dated. The controls dont use the mouse. It can be tedious these days.

If you persevere, however, you will be rewarded with a world close to the size of morrowind at something like 1:3 scale but that is not randomly generated like Daggerfall or Arena. There will be numerous subplots, multiple arching storylines and a level of depth and detail youve not seen in the other games - this is not an RPG and because the story and its progression are linear, the game affords a far more in-depth view of it. You will have to do things like dig for treasure following easily misinterpreted maps, wondering whether the treasure even exists. There will be a large, involved plot in which many characters will play an unexpected part, and some devilishly tricky puzzles. It will feel like the Elder Scrolls lore come alive more than any other Elder Scrolls game, unless squashed or randomly generated scale are your thing.

And although i reservedly agree with most of what Sivan says, Redguard was the first game i played from the TES series and the reason i continued playing it. Morrowind merely reflected the depth of lore that this game pioneered in the TES series. Imho, this game was very much capable of standing on its own merits. It never met critical acclaim, however, as it was something that just didnt appeal to the RPG crowds. Frankly, as a simulation and adventure/action adventure gamer who appreciates nuances RPG's did not appeal to me before Redguard paved the way and Morrowind brought some of that detail into an RPG

If it werent for Redguard i would not have the appreciation i do of TES - Morrowind alone would have been insufficient and Oblivion downright deficient. Redguard and Thief 2 are probably my all time favourite games.

Two thumbs up from me
