Redguards and Magic

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:21 pm

I read somewhere that Redguards are averse to using magic. Is this true? Is there a source you can link to? What's the story there?

I am making a Redguard mercenary character and am trying to decide, from a lore and role-playing perspective, what makes good sense. I am inclined to make her highly phobic about magic use. Am wondering if this would be par for the course for a Redguard or if it would make her an irrational freak.

I know that on Tamriel most peoples pretty much take magic use in stride, just a part of everyday life. Is there a lore precedent for Redguards not liking it?

Thanks in advance, lore hounds! I appreciate your sagacity!

Only heathen magic is "useless thus evil." What I call heathen magic encompasses magic traditions outside the nation of the Ra'Gada.

Redguards are averse to certain types of eastern magic (nudri-hi). Magic that deals souls is considered a huge no-no (since they are prevented from the Walkabout), as is anything that could be considered cowardly or unmanly. There are of course exceptions both among personal opinions and in situations (the preservation of prince Ator's soul in a gem being the big one). The Redguards are also fine with their own western magic (yoku-hi). A Redguard who totally hates all magic wouldn't be wholly out of place, but it wouldn't be the norm, either.

"I'm Trayvond the Redguard, Mages Guild Evoker. Surprised? Yes, you don't see many Redguards in the Mages Guild. We don't much like spellcasters in Hammerfell. Wizards steal souls and tamper with minds. If you use magic, you're weak or wicked. My family didn't approve of my vocation, so I had to come to Cyrodiil for my education. I admit... I still have strong prejudices against necromancy, summoning, and illusion. Profaning the remains or souls of the dead is just wrong. And I'm uneasy about tampering with other's minds and trafficking with Daedra."

Just a quote from Oblivion. Obviously not all Redguard take this position. Though they definitely see nothing wrong with their own "brand" of magic.

That is pretty much all I needed to see right there. Thanks everyone, and special tip of the hat to Fiore1300!

Wouldn't have known playing all the other games, save for Redguards just being a fighting race.
