Reducing Carrying Weight - Questions and Thoughts

Post » Fri May 25, 2012 1:05 pm

I want to reduce my carrying capacity. Usually when I start a new character I use the "player.modav carryweight" command to reduce what I can carry. The CK must have a better way.

I assume I need to go into Character > Race and then find all the playable races and reduce Base Carry Weight. Three questions, though:

1) Is this correct?

2) Will companions be effected by this as well (I hope they are but if not, no big deal)

3) Do I want to also change "DefaultRace"?

Many many thanks.

P.S. Detailed question for people who are of like mind with me that realistic carry weight is the way to go.

I'd like to make my carry weight about 100 and then use essential horses from the Better Horses mod as my pack mules. 100 from the start seems reasonable to me because I checked armor weight and all but the heaviest armor could be worn at low level, but with little room to spare. I realize that early on, especially before I get a horse, I won't be able to pick up every piece of junk I find and therefore I won't make much money. I'm fine with that. In fact I'd like to lower carrying capacity even more, have to work to wear full armor (I also intend to reduce stamina strength gain per level from 5 to 1 or 2), and generally make things harder on myself.

Those of you who think like I do about this and have maybe even tried it, do you have any advice? Things look good in the planning stages but not always so good in action. What weights have you found to be best? How low have you gone before it really became unplayable and unenjoyable? Any other tricks or mods I can try/make that might give me the experience I'm looking for without such drastic measures?

I use this mod, which has separate .ESP files for carry weight. Works like a charm  You don't need to use anything else from the mod, to my knowledge. It's modular.

- Reduced carry weight. 4 options : 300 (Default & Vanilla), 200, 100, 50

Edit: Please don't use "player.modav carryweight". I've used it in the past and it seems really buggy for some reason. Not sure what went wrong when I used it, but so far I've had no issues using HBE for carry weight modifications.

Starting Vanilla carryweight is 300. Starting Stamina points is 100; but think of it as +0 to your carryweight. With that in mind, if you Stamina is 190, it's pretty much +90 pts added to your stamina. Half of those points will always be added to your carryweight. So you'd have 345 carryweight. If you have the extra pockets perk which adds 100 to your carryweight, keep 400 as your base carryweight in mind; therefore that + half of your additional stamina points = your carryweight. 445.

Skyrim Seeker is right about those console commands screwing things up. setav carryweight 0 pretty much reverts it to default (doesn't always work if something has screwed up along the way).

modav carryweight adds or subtracts, like basic math.

If your current carryweight is 445, and you input "modav carryweight 45", it would turn into 490. Similarly, putting a minus sign before "45" would subtract it back to 445. Try to stay away from "modav". It is, however, good for when things mess up and you don't know your true carryweight and want to add or subtract it to the way it was before.

When all else fails, first use "setcarryweight 0" to cancel it out, and then use "forceav carryweight #", where # represents your true carryweight you know you want to enter. 300 for default, plus half of the additional stamina points you have, and an optional 100 if you have the extra pockets perk. Then save (preferably in a new slot, just in-case. Well, do it anyways).

Hey thanks guys.

I never had a problem with that console command. When I use it, I always use it right at the beginning of a new game and then each stamina point increases carrying capacity by 5 as it should.

I downloaded the HBE mod I'd just like to use the HBE_CarryWeight100 plugin. I looked at what it changed and sure enough it just changed each race plus their corresponding vampires. So the work is done for me. The rest of the changes that mod makes are either too drastic for me or they conflict with something else I'm using, so I'm going to stay away from them. I assume I don't need to install the core HBE mod etc. if I'm just using the CarryWeight mod.

LOL it's so funny. Every time I want to mod my game somehow, I find out someone has already released exactly what I want and saved me the time.
