Regarding the lip-sync bug #3

Post » Sun Sep 29, 2013 1:55 pm

New thread in order to maintain the interest in this very annoying bug that may or may not be fixed once, if someone actually finds out how to eliminate it, whether Bethesda or anyone else.

I'm usually very optimistic, however in this specific scenario I can only assume no fix will be produced from Bethesda or dedicated modders. My reasoning behind this assumption is mainly because it's not JUST delayed lip sync, it's much more complex than that. There's several other broken facial animations, the majority of the people on these threads don't even realize that. If there's a dedicated modder out there that is clever enough to repair the entire facial animation foundation then he or she should absolutely give it a shot, but I bet it's going to take forever or break other things in the process (why else wouldn't Bethesda fix it within the beta stages if not for these reasons).

The only thing that gives me a glimmer of hope is that the Steam closed beta history appears to have been modified with stuff that's not related to the language translations 21 days ago. Could someone who's more knowledgeable with deciphering those histories perhaps take another quick glance?

That's the issue. Since the database is not associated with Valve, I doubt anyone other than those uploading the changes know precisely what those things mean.

@TwoHungLow: If the entire facial animation foundation was broken, lip movement wouldn't work at all. Exaggerating the problem really helps noone. Lip movement is a bit out of synch with audio. That's really the extent of the problem.

Everything else I've seen complained about is attached to a couple of console commands they disabled. Since console commands aren't supported by the company, fat chance those will ever be reinstated.

Well, as far as I can surmise the information posted on SteamDB is pulled directly from the Steam servers. The problem is that most of these strings are encrypted so we have very little idea what parts of Skyrim they're touching. However, it's basically certain that there will, indeed, be another Skyrim patch. Why? Well, they're making changes to Skyrim and there is actually a beta tab for Skyrim again (try right-clicking Skyrim in your Steam window, properties, beta). The only thing is that it's a private beta that requires a password to access.

It was only a few days ago that Bethesda erroneously gave people free copies of Dawnguard. That's presumably something they'd have to be touching Skyrim (on the Steam database side) to do - I doubt Steam is quite sentient enough to start rebelling against its masters and sending people free gifts.

Given the changes we've seen evidence of in SteamDB they're going to be adding some new translation support. I'm holding out hope that they will use this patch as an opportunity to fix these lip sync bugs. And, to be honest, the amount of time we've been waiting between 1.9's release and the present day isn't too much longer than how long we've had to wait between Skyrim patches previously.

Between what I mentioned above and some of the scattered support rep responses that indicated the devs are 'aware of'/'working on' the issue, mark me down as still holding out some hope. Skyrim's lip syncing isn't down for the count yet.

And, if it really does get bad, I imagine wizard modders will eventually find some solution or at least decent workaround. We're talking about the same (or, at least, similar) modding community that released such awesome feats of engineering as Morrowind Code Patch and the like.
