So, regarding Tipton's Werefall...

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:58 am

...has anyone been able to get it working? A lot of time has past since that old topic of mine where I asked the same thing, but I'm still unable to run it. I can't even get the invitation for the starting quest anymore...

If I only I were able to track down that trigbin.zip utility...

I've played with it for a little while, and it works. It's very buggy and the triggering invitation quest can sometimes take over a year of game time to kick in-- it'll start immediately after you get one of those were-hunter letters, telling you your days are numbered. I've found sometimes a long journey from one province to another (and I mean long, go someplace far off and don't take a ship) can get things moving if the quest is stalled for some reason. The quests you get from the 'shapeshifter's guild' are also very buggy, and prone to be impossible to complete due to shifting time limits, invalid quest locations, and whatnot. My personal take on Werefall is that it's a good idea that was never properly finished. Supposedly you'll be able to get new potion reagents from the quests that enable you to brew 'identify' and 'recall' potions, but I've never actually had it happen. The major new magic item implemented is the 'Shirt of the Shifter', which is a poor-man's Hircine Ring substitute (and ugly as sin to boot-- I wouldn't wear that thing if it made you king of the werewolves). The letters you get for the mandatory quests have a habit of arriving right when you're in the middle of another quest, and given the time constraints on Werefall quests, even delaying starting one by a few hours usually means failure.
While I like the idea of Werefall, and I'm a big fan of weres in general-- my favorite custom class is a Shifter, deliberately tailored to being a were-- it's too buggy to bother with most of the time. Save yourself the headache and give up on it. For a shapeshifter, I think the Dark Brotherhood is an ideal guild. Paid to hunt, potions and a spymaster, and even soul gems if you're a collector.

The version of Werefall that I tried was not the last version he put out. I tried it and it was a buggy mess. I couldn't find a copy of the latest version of it and have given up looking for it. I looked _really_ hard. And emailed people a lot of the Daggerfools from USENET (remember usenet? :)). And I think I even made a post in alt.games.daggerfall on the off chance someone still read it. I hope someone can find them. Maybe those files are lurking in somebody's forgotten stack of backup cd-rs...

Like his other DF stuff, there were newer versions released than the ones available on the internet archive etc. For some of the utilities the latest versions worked much better.

I'm still kinda sad that Tipton pulled everything and stopped working on (or maybe just stopped releasing?) DF mods :(

I did it as well, but nobody answered me either.

What utilities were you referring to, by the way?

The version of Werefall I've been using is archived here: http://www.svatopluk.com/daggerfall/mods/werefall.stm
I don't know if that was his most up-to-date version. The internet archive page for his old site certainly mentions several features he never had a chance to implement. It works well enough to join the shapeshifter's guild and get quest letters, but at least half the quests terminate before you finish them, sometimes without explanation. Other times you'll be told to go someplace immediately, and even if you leave right away and travel at reckless speed, when you arrive you'll get another letter telling you you were too slow and you failed. I think I've managed to finish perhaps four quests successfully for them, and that after many hassles.
After a while I simply gave up worrying about it and removed Werefall from my game (thankfuly I had a backup save from before I installed it; saves from Werefall are not supposed to be compatible with normal Daggerfall). Suggestions for alternative guilds for shapeshifters (aside from the Dark Brotherhood, which I already mentioned), I'd also add the Fighter's Guild (I've always liked being able to crash in their dorms.) and the Glenmoril Witches, whom you'll find lurking in towns all over the region. Glenmoril will hand out lots of magic items for rewards, and why shouldn't a werewolf hang around with a witch coven? :)

I did get a couple of replies but no joy.

I can't remember which ones have newer versions that are lost. I have a list somewhere, I think I posted it here. http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?s=&showtopic=792290&view=findpost&p=11659798.
Almost 2 years to the day. Strange how that happens, isn't it? :)

I haven't used any of the ones I have in years. I can't remember which ones worked better exactly, because it was 10 years ago when I had and used the latest versions. From memory, all of them worked much better when he updated them.

I didn't play around with Werefall much because I didn't like the idea of it in general. I thought it would be more appropriate for were's to operate as a faction through the Glenmoril Coven. I was mainly interested in it to see how he'd added a functioning faction.

I've just seen that in the "Coming Attractions" paragraph of his site he also mentioned an "initiation quest" for the Order of the Lamp... now that'd been interesting.

I still haven't understood why he took down the site and everything else, though... Daggerfall has never had a true mod scene (unfortunately), but his works were definately at least interesting.

I can only wonder what fans could have done with proper tools and maybe the access to the source code, we can only hope that DaggerXL gets far and the missing features of the original game get implemented somehow. It'd be a dream coming true.

DF had such a strong, creative fan base for such a long time after its release. If it had been easy (or just easier!) to mod, there were be a world of awesome mods out there for it.

It may not be too late for that. Daggerfall fell off the radar for a while, because it was next to impossible to run before DosBox and nobody had copies of it. Now that it's freely available again (Thank you, Bethesda!), there seems to be an upswing in interest. I'm no programmer, but, there are still folks tinkering with it even now. UESP has been making new quest patches in just the past six months. Don't sell the mod scene short quite yet.
I agree the weres fit well with Glenmoril, since they seem to worship Hircine exclusively. Now, if only someone could make it possible to join a witch coven...
samtam99, there are a few mods for Daggerfall that work, mainly in the category of new quests-- I think my personal favorite for custom quest packs is Live By the Sword, which adds about half a dozen very well-designed quests to the Fighter's Guild.

Yep, I know about those. I also remember those xtra quest packs with 15-20 additional missions. I was, however, referring to larger mods (mainly the possibility to implement missing features lost during the development), which are probably impossible to make without the proper tools.

Anyway, I really hope that the mod scene will benefit from Daggerfall being freeware and maybe in the future we will see something like that. And there's always Daggerxl, obviously :D

EDIT: I've just seen http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN custom made installer which includes all the fixes, the latest patches and the quest packs available. Definately well done.
