In regards to third person...

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:38 am

It's only a small think I wanted to discuss, but what kind of camera preferences would we like to see in Skyrim with regards to third person. In the past we've always been behind the character even when turning.

What I wouldn't mind seeing is a sort if Dead Space kind of camera, where we no longer have to hold a button to circle the camera, but instead revolve around the character instead. It would be kinda cool. I mean, chances are they probably wouldn't change it, but I just wanted to know what people thought, and if there were any other ways that third person might be changed for them. ^^

You mean NV, or actually 3? 3 was similar to Oblivion's, while NV was over the shoulder type deal. I thought the latter was terrible. Really hard to get a good view of your character.

I hated the way it was done in FO3 and it only got worse in New Vegas. Much prefer Oblivion style over the other two choices.

I like the camera fine just the way it is in Oblivion -shifting from first person to a trailing third person with just a touch of the scroll wheel and altering the distance and height of the camera with the scroll wheel and the mouse. It works just exactly the way I want it to.

Really? Could you elaborate? In OB you couldn't see what you were doing!

The problem here is that Dead Space is a third person shooter and TES V is an RPG, and I doubt a third person camera like that would be good here. I actually like the way you could zoom in and out in Oblivion, one of the good things they did there. I'd like to see that returning.

I never had a problem playing oblivion in third person. Played it that way almost exclusively, of course I grew up in the times of Pong, Space invaders, and Donkey Kong. Never played an FPS, never cared to, I've always liked my third person perspective, and Oblivion fit that bill perfectly.

IMO if improving third person perspective for Skyrim means ruining what wasn't broken in Oblivion, then that's going to be the very first thing I mod out of the game. it's the first thing I changed in Fallout 3 and New Vegas; bringing third person perspective more in line with Oblivion's style.

Hell to the no. I like having to press down a button because it also allowed me to change how close or how far away the camera was from my character. Plus lining yourself up for a shot when your mouse just controls the camera and not the character would be terrible.

It looks fine as it is in the trailer, which seems like a more zoomed out version of the FO3/NV style over-the-shoulder third person. I didn't think I'd like it, but playing Morrowind with the Code Patch over-the-shoulder third person was actually pretty fun.

I have no problem with an over-the-shoulder view, even if I prefer OB style. I just hope they get it right.

I want third person to be so bad nobody will want it except for walking through scenery. We dont need another third person generic game.

I liked the over the shoulder view from fallout myself so I'd rather something like that along with a context sensitive crosshair for when using ranged combat. I like it better than oblivions because it was hard to do combat in third person especially ranged because you couldn't see anything due to the PC being in the way.

Someone mentioned it being hard to see your character with fallouts style but that's the vanity mode you're referring to is it not? Which is different because third person is usually behind your character so yeah you cant see them well lol.

i think the oblivion way is best. from what i can tell the third person mode took a lot of flac that it didnt deserve because of bad animations and what not. its not the cammeras fault that we moonwalk forward at a 45 degree angle

Are you saying that you'd be happier if it were removed? The option of using third person is the only way I will play it. If third person perspective were removed altogether, I would quit playing TES entirely.

I don't see how camera perspective defines how generic a game is; especially when you have a choice between it and first person.

I also don't understand why you would quit playing a series based on what kind of camera perspective is offered. There's so much more to the game than that.

Fallout 3's style was good. I would choose that one although I'll be playing the game exclusively in FPM but I may change over sometimes if the camera angle is good.

Regardless of what we would like to see, it's clear BGS is going for an over-the-shoulder perspective. The character is slightly off-set to the left of the center of the screen in screen shots and game play footage from the official trailer. Personally, I think this kind of perspective works well for third person. It worked well in Mass Effect, The Witcher, etc and being directly behind the character (ala Oblivion) was just awkward and didn't work well. The only drawback could potentially be melee combat in this perspective, but according to Todd at least, a lot of BGS staff seem to love how it works. Personally though, I'll stay to the traditional first person perspective, as that is how BGS games are meant to be played. Third person is merely icing on the cake in my opinion, and will be nice to switch to from time to time when I want to see my character or the environment from a different perspective.

To be honest, dead space made me feel like i wasnt even my character because of that. And i never liked the over-the-shoulder in fallout. I love Oblivion view.

While I do think TES is best played in 1st person(and designed for it) why would you want it removed? Let people that want to use it use it.

Because, as I already said, that's the only way I will play it, I've also already stated that I have no interest it an FPS. Remove third person altogether, and that's what you will have. Sorry, but it's just not my cup of tea. There are lots of perfectly good games that I will not play because they do not offer third person views.

Todd was quoted in one of the previews as saying "third person rivals other third person games", so it looks like third person is going to be a very viable option.
