I think the rats are persecuted because there are not enough of them in the houses, basemants. With so much unpacked food displayed on all the tables and cupboards there should be thousands of regular sized rats (white, grey, mixed, black&white) everywhere feasting and squeaking in pleasure. Not the bloody skeevers, those are too big to steal from a house and not get caught.
