Regular updating for consoles

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:57 pm

As I roamed the lands of Tamriel in search of mighty foes to slay and valuable loot to carry on my back on the long way home, I came across an old, wicked man who insulted me with his foul attitude. Needless to say, I lopped his head off with my claymore. Days later I was amongst the ranks of the Dark Brotherhood and offered an offer unrefusable. I was asked to become a Vampire, a devious foe who stalks the night. Little did I heed the warnings of daytime traveling and I was fed up with the smoking skin. So I visited an old hag and gave her several ingredients to make a Vampire Cure. She asked for the last ingredient, Bloodgrass. I reached out my hand to give it to her, but she kept asking and asking for it. What was I to do? " Take the bloody bloodgrass!" I yelled, but to no avail. I was doomed to be a Vampire for the rest of my days.

Aside from the role-play, I am speaking about Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, GOTY Edition for PS3. A bug never patched, never looked at, never cared for... But it has doomed my gaming experience until I restarted a character. I loved Oblivion and it's magnificent environment detail, which I credit to be Bethesda's jewel in creating their games, but the gameplay and their faults have been left to die...on consoles.

What I humbly request from the company that sparked my interest in career choice is this: I ask that consoles can have the same amount of attention as is given to PC, patches aplenty, but for good cause! What we see here for Skyrim looks to be Bethesda's greatest accomplishment in all the years of it's existence, where players thrive to take in the intensive combat, the intriguing storylines, and breathtaking scenery to keep them buying.

Like I've said before, Skyrim has potential, Bethesda. Keep consoles regularly updated with patches to the same extent of the PC, and the game will be the greatest for several years to come! All in favor?

Sorry to hear about your bug man, that really svcks. But then again, that's why the age old bit of advice "save often" exists. Well, one of the reasons anyway.
Continued support of product is something everyone should be able to expect from the developers of the games they buy. At least within a reasonable time-frame.
That goes for all games from all developers. Across ALL systems. Hopefully, Skyrim is just receiving the final polish and debugging that will keep it from being a repeat of Fallout: New Bug Fest.
Best of luck to you with your future gaming Red Hawk. And for the record, I do my gaming on the 360.

I think the GOTY edition comes patched with the last patch Bethesda made for the game, but I might be wrong.
But it's a bug I hear for the first time.I played it without a patch and it didn't happened to me.

Thanks for the input, Joey, I appreciate some feedback.

The request for continued support still stands. I just hope they can start updating often where other companies (such as Valve and the promotion of TF2 for PC and abandonment of console) fail to keep up.

I think the most obvious solution is to kill the old lady.

They totally patched it man.
I spent over 700 days as a vampire because of that glitch, but finally, I got the GOTY edition and the glitch was no more. I completed the quest and waved goodbye to Porphyric Hemophilia. Also, if you download the vampire's lair dlc you can cure yourself instantly once you upgrade it all the way.

Rather than regular updating the goal would be trying to have everything functioning in the first place. An all new engine over gamebryo should help a lot already in the first place.

Now bugs will undoubtedly be there like just about every game/RPG out there nowadays. Rather than regular updating the goal should be trying to compile a fix in a timely fashion for a majority of bugs found after releas-

Thinking about it. I still say fixes should be compiled even though some people like small fixes over a span of time to a large patch over a larger time hoping their issue is in that particular small fix.

My hope is they get to patching immediately and continue until a vast majority of bugs are fixed. Not half, not most, virtually 97-99%.

I completely agree, Treyster, small patches in acceptable intervals seems right for the occasions, and heck, why wait a while for a big patch just so it comes when interest is lost or not at all, even?

And Gloomweaver, that's fantastic news, I'll have to check it out for myself tomorrow!!

Good well thought out post... I'm going to nominate you for President of the video game industry. In all seriousness, good goals, let hope they do just this.

Well if we are lucky they will make so much money in the next two years that they will be able to hire a small team to start at Morrowind and work their way forward addressing small issues and further extending the life of their growing lineup of perpetual selling games.

On my PS3, I never got that vampire glitch until after I got the GOTY version, and the only way to fix it was to insert the non-GOTY disc, cure my vampirism, save, and then I could use the GOTY disc again. Now I'm just super careful by drinking cure disease potions before I sleep lol.

I had a long thread on this before. Unfortuntely, Playstation 3 did not receive ANY DLCs that Xbox 360 and PC recieved besides The Shivering Isles, which isn't really a DLC but an expansion.
I heard that something messed up. But I really wanted Battlehorn Castle and Frostcrag Spire but they were never released.

So therefore, he can't download Vampire's Lair since he is playing it on Playstation 3.

I believe that was an issue temporarily on the 360 port, but Bethesda did release a patch that updated and fixed it (just like the money glitch). I don't know about the PS3, but the 360 will more than likely have all the major patch updates.

Hmm, last I played, a month or two ago, I still racked up the money glitch. Meh, seems like PS3 has been left out of a lot of fixes. Here's to hoping for a brighter future of ES on ALL systems.

I think PS3 will definitely get more loving this time around. Considering Oblivion came out later on PS3 than PC and 360, a lot of features and updates were probably neglected and forgotten. Bethesda is actively testing Skyrim on all three platforms, so things should be different.

The reason why the updates are not regular for the console versions is because AFAIK Microsoft charges Developers $500 for every free downloadable patch they release after the first one. Plus it has to go through some kind of QA process on their end, which I imagine would be lengthy and full of red tape.

PS3 doesn't do this but they obviously would want to keep things consistant across all platforms, so they don't have the PS3 version getting all these updates that the 360 version never sees (which would svck).

On the other hand, It's why Valve is suddenly in such support of the PS3 and why they are now allowing Steam intigration to happen for it - because it allows for frequent updates and expandability, which is what valve does all the time for their games.

They fixed the vampire cure glitch? That's the only quest I never completed in Oblivion.... I guess I should go complete it now :celebration:
All I can say as thank Molag Bal for the Vile Lair DLC. Too bad that cure is permanent though.

I think there should be patches - Grand Theft Auto IV and Just Cause 2 had them. One thing I don't understand is the sheer amount of glitches in Oblivion's missions, it's just astonishing to me. Almost every mission I have to read to make sure I won't enact a glitch that ruins the mission.
