Where are you (which country) and did you buy the game locally?

What is the name of the patch you are installing?

Did you make any changes to the game? Add mods, change any files, anything?

That's not a name for the file

"Fallout3_1.7_English_US.exe" is a name for a file, and should be the name of the one you are using.

The exact error message would be helpful too, if there is one. Vagueness does you no good in these situations.

At any rate, first thing I'd try would be getting an updated install of Games For Windows Live from Microsoft's website. Install that first and then try the patch.
