Reinstalling Morrowind

Post » Wed Jul 27, 2011 1:59 pm

I want to reinstall my Morrowind on another drive with all the modern mods. However, im confused with what to follow: MGSO or http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/p/morrowind-modding-guide.html? What should i pick between the two? or do I have to get both? if i get both, what should i install first?

Thanks for the replies! :)

Knots is new to me but it's remarkably similar to my own installation that I've been building for a couple of years now. The main difference is that the Knots is do-it-yourself and MGSO is an installer. I think MGSO has more mods too but the main difference seems to be the installation. I prefer to pick my own so I haven't used MGSO although the selection is good; I don't think you'd be unhappy with either.

Bot the solutions have good and bad sides. It all depends on your needs.

MGSO:

+ Much more complete (about 220 mods from ~100 authors)
+ "Easy install" with detailed guide, and more quicker to install than knots' guide
+ Several options to choose mods to suit your personal tastes
+ Good documentation on how to tweak it
- An huge package (~1.5 GB with patches)
- It could become outdated during the time needed to do a new patch <----- this will be soon resolved: an auto-update feature is on the way!

Knots' Guide:
+ Very detailed guide, pretty easy to follow
+ MGE XE (realtime shadows, you can install this in MGSO too. This will be included in the 2.0 release of MGSO)
+ Really good choice of mods
+ Mods can be updated more quickly, but you need to update them yourself
- No options to choose from
- More time is needed to install all the stuff

So it's up to you, as you can see both solutions aren't perfect.

Oh and by the way I'm the project leader for MGSO, feel free to ask if you need help.

I hate to point out the flaws in your argument, since I rather LIKE your Morrowind Overhaul project, but the thing with Knots' guide is that you CAN ignore specific parts of it, replace them with things you find better, et cetera. That's the thing about using a guide that links all the pieces together for you is that they're interchangeable in practice. Just the same, it's better for a lot of people, especially newcomers, to use a completed one-size-fits-all install like MOSG.

Im still playing another game now (im rushing it so I could get back to Morrowind). If I download v1.3 today, then you release v2, will it autopatch MGSO? Also, my problem with Morrowind right now is that mods changes tend to be permanent (unlike Oblivion's omods). Is there a workaround from that problem?

EDIT:
oh yeah guys im a returning morrowind player. Ive played morrowind from 2004-2007, then went to Oblivion from 2007-2008. Never played a TES game since. But I miss Morrowind (actually it's still installed at my old hard drive but i forgot the mods and everything about it) so I decided to play again. It's such a bummer though because back then (around 2006) I made a mod that incorporates all faces and clothings/armors and painstakingly made an "organized-but-randomized" lists for different npcs in morrowind, basically grouping themed clothings/armors and face masks into lists, then putting those lists within lists for several vanilla npcs and mca npcs. The mod turned out to give npcs controlled-random clothings/armors/faces and it looked good (especially for mca npcs). I didn't release the mod because i didnt use any original content.

I love Knots' guide. At since it's just a guide, one can only choose what he/she wants to install instead of downloading a a large package. I like his selections in the graphics department (though I use all of Connary's textures instead of only the ones linked), but I only chose to install a few in the gameplay sections. Also, since you have to take the time to install every mod, it's a great learning experience that will get you ready to search for and install the mods you want later on without much hassle.

my main problem is that I can't remember the mods i have back then. When I was still playing back in 06 (the year i started to mod, ive played morrowind since 04 and stopped at about 07), the only tool I used was level list merger, and everything else were given hands-on management by me. But I already forgot these details. I'll post pics back then when i didn't have a good computer and I played Morrowind through imagination.

That's right, but what would someone ignore?
The answer is - correct me if I'm wrong - trees and grass, maybe some particoular mods like animated morrowind, etc.
Well, all these things can be disabled completely with MGSOO.
Anyway I'm not trying to say that using my pack is the best option in all the cases, just clarifying things ;)

@Author:
Yes the autopatcher will be enabled and you will download all the updates for the v2.0 automatically.

I downloaded MGSO first. I'll install Morrowind again sometime this week. I figured that having an installer like this is a good investment in the future. Lastly, is there an obmm equivalent in morrowind?

EDIT:
my MGSO is broken...gotta download it again.. >.<

I hate to point out the flaws in your argument (snip)
With my guide, you can skip certain things but I don't give you options, so if you have a mod you'd rather use you'd better know where it is and where to get it. I'd like to think all of the mods I link to are the cream of the crop; usually I pick the highest resolution or most true to vanilla textures and replacers when making recommendations.

KINGPIX says MGSO gives you a choice because it's installer let's you pick certain elements you'd like to install. Obviously he can't provide you with all the options you'd have if you did tedious searches on PES and Nexus and compared each replacer yourself, but that's what he means when he says there's more choice.

At any rate, the King of Pix nailed this one on the head with his post. Nothing more to say. You might want to glance my guide over even if you do use MGSO to get a good idea of some of the other stuff that is out there. Knots => why not put in your signature the link to your Guide? Because it's useful.
