(Release) Cave Texture Fix

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:14 pm

In a nutshell ........

Morrowinds cave rock models use different textures than the rest of models that make up each cave set thus the rocks look out of place because they do not match their surroundings. The mod is a pluginless mesh replacer with 311 retextured models that ensure that all models in each of the 5 cave sets use the same texture of the relevant type. Actual appearance of caves will depend on the textures you choose to use.

1. DESCRIPTION

*****************************************************************

This mod is a collection of 311 retextured meshes that are used to make
Morrowinds cave systems, many of Morrowinds cave models are ok as they
are this mod contains retextures of the models that were not. Once installed
all of the 113 models that make up each type of cave will use the same
texture of the appropriate type.

Of the 113 models in each set, 28 of them are rocks, none of the
original rock models match the rest of the sets because a totally
different texture is applied to the rocks than with the other models.
This mod attempts to fix the geologically unlikely event of cave rocks
being of a different type to the surrounding rockbed.

In other words this mod will help make your caves look better by
applying textures that make the cave rocks match their surroundings.

After installation the following textures will be used by the
corresponding cave set.

Bone caveset -- tx_cavern_bone00.tga

Lava caveset -- tx_cavern_lavawall00.tga

Mold caveset -- tx_rock_cave_mo_01.tga

Mud caveset -- tx_rock_cave_mu_01.tga

pyr caveset -- tx_rock_cave_P_01.dds

*****************************************************************

2. INSTALLING THE PLUGIN

*****************************************************************

Extract the meshes into your Morrowind/datafiles/meshes/i folder.

The bone and lava rock models in this mod are retextured versions
from the correct UV rocks mod by Nich. If using correct UV rocks
then this mod should be installed AFTER that for the retextures
to take effect.

NB, if a message appears asking you if you want to change existing
files click on YES

Nice one, I'm definitely giving this a try once the PES link is up. I wonder how it looks with Connary's textures...

I'm guessing it'll work well with http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6890?

I never really noticed this before, I don't use texture replacers and I like the contrast in the stock caverns. But if I ever begin using texture replacers. This is on my list of must haves!

I'm really excited to try this out! Out of interest, what texture replacer are you using in the screenshots?

I actually said "Oh. My. God." when I saw this REL. (out of sheer joy)
Thank you for all the work Slartibartfast, it was sorely needed for the caves.

Your unhealthy obsession of modding sure suits me :) I've often been bothered by the contrast for years and so am really looking forward to trying this out - pluginless is always much appreciated as well

Are you able to post any more screenshots? I noticed in #1 I could see the same texture in the rocks - almost like 3 bubbles running up the side that I could see on the cave wall - just wondering if the texture repetition occurs much? Not that it bothers me - just interested :)

I have just checked , i will need to retexture some of the models in diverse ores but that shouln't take long , most likely i'll post an update with compatibility add on when the mod is accepted, although it will be Nich's correct UV diverse ores variant that i do.

It is a mix and match replacer i have made up myself using various textures from the many texture replacers that have been released over the years. I think the textures in the screenshots are all skydyes from some seamless texture resource packs he releasesd a few years back i don't think they are available anymore. but if you like those in the screenshots https://www.yousendit.com/directDownload?phi_action=app/directDownload&fl=SWhZekZrNXZmVFo3czBPNjA4bU9SMHVDeVNFRkF0Qm1kRmM2aXU1dg&experience=bas

The screen shot was taken in Koal cave , just south of Gnisis , very small and cramped inside but http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i109/Slartibartfast_2006/ScreenShot123.jpg?t=1282527872.

I never actually noticed the textures before. I don't spend much time in caves and I can't see anyway. I actually like the contrast in the red and green caves, though I think the other two look better matching.

My mod isn't a replacer, it is a fix because Bethesda used 2 rock texture types for each cave and the comtrast probably won't look good. If you use wildly contrasting textures like i do then the contrast definitily doesn't look good. Also in reality the rocks in a cave will be from the same rock as the walls so you wouldn't expect to find sandstone rocks in a granite cave for example.

When Bethesda made the mold , mud and pyr cavesets, instead of using the appropriate texture they had made, they used mostly natural cavern textures , so technically speaking there are no mud mold or pyr caves in Morrowind innstead you have natural caverns with a few mud mold and pyrite rocks in.

fixing a problem you never knew you had

Poor Slartibartfast1 and his texture fixes. People install them, forget them, and the only time they think about Slartibartfast1 and his mods again while playing is not when he does something right, but when he misses a seam.

Always happy to see new texture fix mods. I'd actually never noticed this cave texture problem before this thread either though. :whistling:

All I'd ever noticed was that the dwemer cave connection and the daedric cave connection are both limited to only one cave type each.

And Slartibartfast1 strikes again with another texture fix mod! :woot: Thanks for making this, I bet it was rather tedious work! Will download as soon as it is up on PES. :foodndrink: And additional thanks making a version for the Correct Ore Veins mod.

Thanks for the kind words folks,

I am still waiting for PES to provide a download link so here is a temporary link https://www.yousendit.com/directDownload?phi_action=app/directDownload&fl=SWhZekZwY3lCSWV4djh3V3o4cU9SMHVDeVNFRkF0Qm1kRmM2aXU1dg&experience=bas which also contains the files needed for the 'Diverse ore veins' and 'Correct UV - Diverse ore veins' mods to blend in.

From readme ....

Ver1.1 Added another 6 animated meshes hiding in the Meshes/f
folder these are the pools and spouts for the Mold, Mud
and Pyrite cavesets. The bone and lava sets already have
the correct textures assigned to them thus were not included.
