Release Date (The Why Of It)

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 1:47 am

Dear Wanderers and Developers,

Some of you may look at this post and say, "Oh, another person complaining about the release date" but alas, today this is not the case. I'm more interested in the choice of date. Why November? Why not December? It would make an excellent Christmas gift to us all, would it not? Now I'm not saying push it back (for the love of my sanity, please don't). I'm just curious about the placement from a development view as well as a marketing view. Was it fully intentional to release a game, that has a current / ex-military background protagonist, one day before Veterans Day (U.S.)? Or was it an arbitrary date?

Considering all things, why not October 23rd the date of the Great War's beginning? Wouldn't that make more sense considering the lore / marketing potential / opening sequence of the game? Or was it too soon for the bugs (large gamebreaking) to be totally ironed out? I'm just trying to pick the brains of the development / production staff.

Yes, as I stated. But, what's the 'Why' of it? I myself have had a hand in creating mods and indie titles, so it's weird yes but, all the more important to me as someone who loves to learn about the game creation process, all the way down to the dates and marketing.

Possibly, though I'd like to see the logistics of the timing as well.

Games are usually always released on a Tuesday (besides Nintendo games, apparently), and they already stated that they're doing some final polish on the game so it'll be up to their standards by November 10th. They wanted to balance the time it took to feel completely comfortable with the game with the amount of time people would have to wait for its release. Bethesda doesn't like making people wait longer than they feel necessary. Also, nothing is stopping this from being a Christmas gift. Personally, I'd rather have this before Christmas instead of getting it on Christmas day on account of all the family stuff that goes on throughout the day (and possibly the next). It would leave little time to play that day and would probably drive me crazy thinking about it.

There isn't always some elaborate grand meaning to something.

While, yes, the swanky 111 of November 10 shows good marketing strategy, you still got to ask, was it accident that the development quota dates aligned here. Or was it planned to stop the production of the release title before (possibly a couple weeks, as many AAA development groups do) so everyone can wind down and enjoy a paycheck, not being completely burned out on content fixes right before the title release so they can get back to the meat of the matter of bug fixing on Nov. 11 (probably what happened, It's what I'd do).

Also, I'm not looking for some hidden meaning here. I'm just curious, it bugs me when something seems out of place.

Didn't they release Skyrim November 11th? Seems they have a love affair with the month of November.

*Sigh* I would have so adored an October release date. The week before All Hallows' Eve perhaps.

On another note, the timing is perfect for my life. 4 years ago to the date is when I first played Fallout 3. Also, It happens to fall on my Birthday, so, yay and stuff.

Oh, and also, how many people are going to watch people do horrible things to their copy (hopefully standard) of Fallout 4 in about 2 or so months? Because, you know, Will it Blend and the like will do anything for subscribers.

It actually kinda freaks me out when a game is not released on a Tuesday. When the Nathan Drake Collection dropped on a Friday i was actually kind of taken aback. It feels like an industry standard/

Releasing a product in November is exactly how you maximize the Christmas sales.
That's just common practice for how markets works.

Ugh, that is so wasteful. At least turn it into a coaster or some kind of outdoor art shiny wind thing.

November 10th = 1110, which has 111 in it. It's kinda gimmicky, but not as bad as Skyrim's which was 11/11/11, but before Christmas is an excellent time to release, as was mentioned.

Incidentally, Rise of the Tomb Raider (and other games I'm sure as well) is also releasing on November 10th.

I've forgotten the answer to the industry reason for releasing on Tuesdays. (Same type of thing in the music industry.) Makes more sense to release games on Fridays :)

Actually fall is a perfect time to release 4th quarter merchandise since the sales of the product will be mostly counted for that 4th quarter. Wait until December and the profits could roll over to 1st quarter of the next year. You want to finish strong, not necessarily start strong. Releasing in the beginning of the 4th quarter also means they still have a month of advertising to grab new customers before christmas. Fallout 4 will still be a big holiday seller just from advertisemants and word of mouth.

Me personally, I'm glad it's a Nov release. December is a hectic time.. lots of family to visit, lots of shopping to do.. lots of crap I'd really hate having to do if I also had a massively huge game I was anxious to play. By the time December roles around I'll have at least played enough that I won't feel all anxious if I have to skip a few weeks of playing.

I actually had this come in my mind the other day fallout comes out on the season of fall, i wonder, but scratch that, one thing i can tell you is it won't be moved at all this game was started being worked on after fallout 3 was launched in 2008.
