Releasing a new oblivion & SI italian translation: probl

Post » Thu Nov 21, 2013 4:42 pm

Hello guys, what I would like to know is: are there any risks, legally speaking, in releasing an improved italian translation for OBLIVION & SHIVERING ISLES expansion? It is not finished yet, but I am changing every record contained into oblivion.esm and I save them into a new .esp file which requires oblivion.esm as a master. Furthermore, what could happen if an user uses this .esp file without having installed the shivering isles expansion? Would the game crash? I cannot perform a test as I have bought the english only deluxe edition of oblivion through Steam.

You are free to make just about any mod you want for this game, as long as it does not use already copyrighted resources, like content from another game. Also, your mod must require the original game assets to be used. Since this is what you want to do, then go for it.

As for SI being part of your mod, it will require anyone who uses your mod to have SI installed, the game will not launch otherwise with your mod. That is probably OK as almost anyone who has this game on PC has SI. Mostly because it added so much to the scripting of the game that most mods require SI, and SI was such a fun expansion that everyone wants to play it.

What may be of more importance to you is to make sure that the game you are modding has the Italian Language patch on it (it does if the game plays in Italian) and that anyone who uses the mod has that same language patch. I mention this as a number of folks purchase the original English Language version even in Europe, and if you put a mod on that that was made on an Italian language version, then the game will get weird on you (languages will be all mixed up).
