Yeah but didn't a lot of the so called F2P games start out like ESO will? With a box and a sub fee? That means that at one time those turds were fluffy pieces of cake.
Or, what is one man's trash is another man's treasure. What is novel to one person is old news to another.
Plays more like 'I can't read'.
My personal take on it is that the reason MMOs go F2P is simply the reality of economics meets the reality of how lame most MMO games are. There are a few MMOs that players of such games really like, but most are bad ... and most video game players are not going to be MMO fans - hence they will try out a game and quickly realize that it is bad. The company will hold out hope for these purchases as being the next WoW. Then F2P when that doesn't work.
There is only so long you can play the same game mechanics, and the lack of game mechanics is what makes people say things like 'If you have played one MMO, you have played all MMOs.' So the companies rely on hype, marketing, and creating a player base off of whatever new IP they are dismantling.
I'd estimate that more than 96% of MMOs have or will go F2P. As the market shows that to be the way to go there is no well wishing for a game that will stop it. Then we will have MMO players who will defend that too and get long posts about the necessity of F2P participants so that their premium monthly purchase (what used to be called the subscription) will be possible because what really matters is 6-12 months of grinding to get to end game content.
