Religion in Fallout

I know there are cults in fallout, like the bright followers and the mormons of zion, but why does religion not play a significant role in the game? Like why are there no real mainstream religions and why is your character areligious by default?

I would like to see religion play a bigger role particularly extremists. (Obviously not with real world religions)

Its really just out in the background, like it should be me my opinion. Your character isn't automatically irreligious, you can have him/her believe whatever you want.

But we have mainstream religions in Fallout. Catholicism (Fallout 3) and Mormonism (New Vegas) come to mind specifically. No doubt there are others as well. Wasn't Aradesh Hindu?

I know there are cults in fallout, like the bright followers and the mormons of zion

Mormonism isn't a cult.

My character is catholic, like myself, you're only hindered by what you let your character be. It's probably for the best if they keep real world religion to be a small part, as it currently is. Not everyone likes religion, and it could hinder the experience for some people. Just my opinion, I wouldn't mind if they were touched upon, I'd find it interesting myself.

Meh, religion shouldn't be in the game very much at all. If a mainstream religion does appear it should be a very skewered version of it with many inaccuracies. In a post-apocalyptic wasteland it's pretty damn clear that even if there was a God, he's abandoned the Human race.

We actually don't allow real-world religion discussions - talking about ingame stuff is generally okay, but this topic has already had a couple reports and it's tip-toed over the edge with referencing some real-world stuff, sorry.
