Religion in Skyrim

Post » Wed Jan 12, 2011 5:06 pm

I do not know if there is any information on this so I was curious as to what you guys think.

Since there is a civil war between the "Old Skyrim" and the Empire, will there be a change in religious doctrine? Or will the Nine Divine still be the one and only religion in Skyrim?

I know that, say Julianos is referred to as Jhunal in Skyrim, would only people who support the rebellion call Julianos Jhunal?

I would think that being a "true Nord" would involve returning to the old ways of things. Worshiping the Nine Divine would be too "pro-Impirial" for some Nords.

Feel free to critique me. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I think and hope there'll be some kind of religious guild or quests. There's going to be tension between pro and anti imperial factions, so I deduce from this that both will be represented.

As far as I know, the Nords have had their own religion for a long time, though it share many gods with other religions, albiet with different, if similar, names.

The Nine Divines are a combination of Nordic and Elven views of the Aedra. Many Nords stuck to their own version of the pantheon.

I do hope that religious conflict between the Imeprial and Nordic pantheon plays a part. It ought to be interesting, given their wildly different views of dragon gods of time.

I think Nords were free to worship their gods in the Third Empire, which seemed to be pretty tolerant religion and culture wise (had to be or it'd have been even more unstable). It's just the people who identify with the Empire more than their homeland tend to take up worship of the Nine, so I think it'll actually be the loyalists who will do the bringing about of a change in doctrine if anyone, and that depends on how radical they're willing to get. It'll probably be something like Morrowind, with the native religion dominant and the Imperial Cult falling behind it.

I hope there will be a "Shor Cult" as a joinable faction.

Yes churches competing for the fold. Nord-centric versions of the deities that don't match other versions. This could add fuel to the civil war thing too.

The imperials believe Acatosh to be benevolent, while the Nords see him(?) as the embodiment of Alduin and certain doom in his(?) awakening and devouring the world.

It's not exactly a pantheon, each divine is a different temple organization. The Nords under that arrangement probably always worshiped their gods their way, but had the other divines available for their uses.

So the divines are more of a list of society's accepted gods to worship, not a gathering of gods to be worshiped together.

If they do have political friction this could also be a part of it too. When do you think this type of info would be released? Would asking a dev help?

Not trying to be a stickler here, but since this is in correction of another post I thought I would clarify the fact that you are both right in your interpretation of the word 'pantheon'.
It has multiple meanings. Firstly it can be used to describe a temple dedicated to all the gods of a particular society and secondly it is used when describing the collection of gods worshipped by a society. :grad:

Religion in Oblivion was a joke and a bad one at that. I'm hoping it plays a much larger role in Skyrim, the way it did in Morrowind.

Perhaps some joinable factions that restrict access to the other's services? (the way the Imperial cult and Tribunal Temple should have been in Morrowind)

Or maybe even take up daedra worshiping although I think this is way too much to ask.

Is daedra worship not accepted in Skyrim?
I am too hoping religion plays a large role in this, as does all the things they seemed to neglect in Oblivion.
Religion, politics, racial friction, etc...

They have their own religion in Skyrim I thought?

I'm sure we'll see at least 2 different religions in the game. With civil war brimming in Skyrim I'm sure there will be religious, moral, and political turmoil happening. Therefore I'm sure we'll see a major and minor religion like in Oblivion with the nine-divines and daedra.

Kynareth should be a major goddess in the Nordic pantheon, not just an Aedric nature goddess. She may be a daughter of Shor, and Fryssa may also show up,along with Fryse Hags. We may get an explanation on why they did attack our characters in the Bloodmoon expansion. The Moth priests should play a major role in Skyrim-the Allesian religion was monotheistic in the beginning.EDIT The conflict could be fueled by a faction claiming the defeat and fall of the first Nordic empire created by Harald Hands-Free and the twelve kings that came before him was caused by turning away from Shor and turning to Elven gods, "Hanins Wake" took place when Nords did rule most of Tamriel during the first era before the rise of the Tribunal and the events at Red Mountain.

I hope so. Two competing factions would be nice. ..and perhaps an animist sort, like a bear cult.

a quest to burn down the last churches dedicated to the nine that would be nice.

I always found the deadra and some pagan religions (like Solthtim) much more intriguing, the nine I hated since morrowind, only a bunch of arrogant racists if you ask me.

I enjoyed playing Morrowind and being in either the Tribunal Temple (as a supporter of the dissident priests) or the Imperial Cult, depending on the race I played. I missed that in Oblivion (though the Knights of the Nine helped a little. I'd dearly love to see a joinable religious faction return. Even more so, I'd love to see individual factions for each of the major Nord dieties, particularly Shor and Kyne.
