Remaking Morrowind?

Post » Sun Jun 20, 2010 8:44 pm

Is it legal to try and recreate Morrowind using the Oblivion Engine? Not requesting or saying I'll do it, just asking.

Long story made short: Remakes are allowed, but it's not okay to directly convert content from Morrowind to Oblivion.

Yeah, you could try to do it from scratch. But using anything directly from Morrowind (mesh files, texture files, scripts [not that they'd work], dialogue, journal entries, etc), even as a base point, would be copyright infringement. It has to be literally from scratch.

Pretty sure the Tamriel Rebuilt team is working on it, actually.

The Tamriel Rebuilt team has given up work so that they could work on finishing the mainland of Morrowind.

Nothing wrong with saying Morrowind here. It's perfectly legal to say Morrowind, and it's perfectly legal to create a mod which recreates TES3, as long as all resources are created from scratch or vanilla TES4 resources are used. It's also acceptable to use resources created from scratch for TES3 if you want to port them across to TES4. What isn't allowed is using vanilla resources from TES3 in a mod for TES4.

@Gryphon I have to ask why are you telling him not to say morrowind. Im not being rude just asking. Even with the high chance I'll be flamed for this I'll say it anyways, I think morrowind was better, at least in many things. such as Lore, Actual Item Placement instead of random leveled items everywhere. Also I think that their were so many cities in comparison that oblivion seems so much smaller(regardless of what others may say, it still feels that way)
However they did happen to make many things better, such as Scripts, Scripted Spells, Graphics(not that they are that important to me, I'd rather have a good story then worry about having the best graphics out there that make slow computers slower, lol. Even though I have a really fast computer I'd still rather have better story and lore.)

So point being it that bethseda should look into remaking Morrowind with today's tools and leave it mainly the same but throw in the features from oblivion that everyone likes.
Such as
- The AI System
- The scripting System (Maybe even include more functions)
- The Spell System (Scripted spells and other misc parts)
- A bunch of other things, but use lore and a storyline as vivid as morrowind

Oh and ps they should also get rid of the oblivion voice dialog, its really in my opinion annoying, just like in many other games, where as morrowind's dialog system was amazing.(For all of those that like voice dialog Im sorry but that's my opinion. They could always use both.)

No, don't use the M word around here,

Now that's just silly, Morrowind isn't a swear word :P
@Fox536; While I agree with practically all of your points, I'd advise you to be careful when comparing Morrowind and Oblivion here. We don't want to turn this discussion towards another needless debate. Both games were/are good in their own ways. End of discussion.

And the thread descends into chaos.

On topic, Onra is making heightmaps of the whole of tamriel, so you might want to check there and see if Morrowind is being made.

As far as I know you can make your own Morrowblivion if you have both games, but only for your own use and distribution would be illegal.

The only place I've seen argument about which game is better is on the Morrowind forums. Hardly ever see that on this forum.

and yeah now that the M word has finally passed the lips expect a lock at any moment.

Were you here when Oblivion was released? Went over all the time when it was new.

I think by this point we've just accepted that Morrowind was better...

Point taken - no I was not.

But I will say that whenever I see anyone ask to make Morrowind more like Oblivion on the MW forums they are belittled, berated, and practically shamed for even making the request. All backed with delusional ideas that MW was some sort of 'the only true RPG video game.'

I don't see that happening when people ask to port over MW ideas to Oblivion here. No one chides them and points fingers at them - in fact they encourage it.

Big big difference in attitude.

This happens with every sequel, with pretty much every franchise. Should have seen the deluge of "Daggerfall was better" during Morrowind's day. Just sentiment.

When TesV rolls out the tune will change. TESIV will be decent and the new addition will be the scourge of the universe. hardcoe [censored] like them can;t handle change.

That said. back on topic.

Onra's Heightmaps are great and last I saw he was working to finish with Morrowind. Give him a PM.

Last I was on TR they were still building Morrowind for TesIII. ALOT of their content is custom built for their mod. [censored] their ears to see if they will trow some your way. YOu may not get hteir help building though. they have alot to do and love their current endeavor. (And they like Oblivion, Because they are sound thinking excellence driven modders :D)

Closed for excessive discussion of Morroblivion, which will not be promoted even as a tool for private use, on these forums.

The forums will not distinguish between the use of Morrowind resources in Oblivion and the furnishing of a tool that allows others to use Morrowind resources in Oblivion. Both are closed to discussion, without exception.
