Remember that game...

Post » Fri Jan 28, 2011 3:50 pm

So I was looking through some old pc games today that I have laying around and I came across an old childhood series favorite of mine- Uprising: Join or die and Uprising 2: Lead and destroy. These games came out in the late 1990's and were essentially real time strategy games from the first person point of view of your "wraith" tank. You formed bases by building citadels and different buildings like barracks, light tanks, heavy tanks and bombers. You called in vehicles and troops on the fly to help you with battle and you could upgrade them as well.

It was a blast back in the day and I'm thinking of reloading it for ole times sake. Does anyone else remember these games? What are some of your old games you recently have found that bring back nostalgic memories?

I never played those games, but not too long ago I came across http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EGTgriZPig Myst-like gem in a box. Me and a friend both played this over the course of a summer back in the late 90's or early 2000's I think and talked about it like a book club. :P

Spent a lot of time on that game.

Nice, my first psx game that I got (which I was mad about since I really wanted N64 and had no idea what a playstation was) was Air Combat, later moving on as Ace combat!

I've been on a major old games kick lately. I've been playing lots of games that I remember from when I was really young, like Myst, Link to the Past, Donkey Kong, Spyro and Jazz Jackrabbit; ones that aren't that old(but that I still love) like Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission; and older games that I never played back in the day(mainly Sonic games, but also Super Metroid).

It's helping me to stave off the wait till Skyrim and GW2.

Warcraft 2 for myself, and though it may not be that old I've given Morrowind another shot lately.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is one of those extremely nostalgic games for me. It was one of the first games my brother and I had a blast going through in co-op during one of our Summer breaks when we were younger. Ah.. nostalgia.

Thief, Half-Life, and Tiberian Sun are my big 3 nostalgia-inducers. Although I still play Thief quite often.

Edit: Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight is also a biggie.

Spy Fox
Pajama Sam
Freddi Fish

All these were PC games I used to play as a kid.

Then on N64 there was Donkey Kong 64, Megaman 64 (why doesn everything have a 64?) and Super Smash Brothers...

Damn, that stuff brings back memories. Along with Kingdom Hearts on PS2, but that's more recent..

I still have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyNZdQa2kcE.

I used to play Syndicate, Doom II, Duke Nukem 2, Dune II and Xargon pretty regularly.

I got a kick out of Xargon because I couldn't believe they named the main character Marvin.

Currently I have been playing through the n64 series of Zelda games. Harvest moon 64 as well. I know it wasn't the most popular system back in the day, but some of my favorite gaming memories stem from that system and it's vaseline covered graphics.

Haven't played or heard of those games, but there are many I remember very fondly.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
A lot of opinions of it will be coloured by nostalgia, but this game got a lot of things right that RPG developers of today should pay attention to. And there needs to be more dungeon music like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqvHZvOqEIk

Final Fantasy VIII / IX
Haven't played a Final Fantasy game since, but I've still got the original Playstation 4-disc box of FF8, and the "Platinum" box of FF9. Both really captured by imagination (and my obsessive-compulsive tendencies) at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l75zjpDpAWs

Golden Axe (the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Axe - check out that cover art!)
One of the first games I ever played, on the Sega Megadrive. Crazy side-scrolling hack & slash, surprisingly challenging at the higher difficulty levels, and featuring a really cheesy yet cool fantasy land. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr8-woRCEiM

And the rocks...and that level where you turn into a bee...or that underwater level which seemed like I was playing Echo the Dolphin...

Final Fantasy VII - Only my third or fourth favorite Final Fantasy, but easily the game that brings back the most memories. The first Final Fantasy (maybe even first RPG in general) that I played and pretty much shaped my taste in games.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - A lot of the same reasons as Final Fantasy VII, except Ocarina of Time was technically my second Zelda game (had the original on NES). Unlike the original, I actually beat Ocarina.
