Removal of Attributes

Post » Fri Aug 19, 2011 10:11 am

I was just thinking, with the removal of attributes, is that also the removal of something that played a pretty decent part in the past few Elder Scrolls games, and Fallout 3, Luck?

Are they removing it or is it going to be there as a separate statistic?

there will always be luck in a game, regardless if it has a number value or not.

I found trying to make "Luck" a stat to be silly anyway... By definition, no mechanic can thwart bad or good luck.

All luck really did in Oblivion was essentially make your skills better than their current level.

It did not, despite popular belief, make you find better loot in either Morrowind or Oblivion.

Definitely need luck. Need to expand on it as well, even though it already did a lot more than just raise skills in previous ES games.

Trying to put a number on how lucky someone is didn't really make sense to me anyways.

real gods dont make sense to me, neither does half the stuff in an ES game. Luck, game wise adds variety and RP options.

Yup, you could RP some lucky guy, would be great if gampling was in the game etc.

I would have preferred it if luck was something you picked in character creation and didn't change in game.

It's much easier to quantify some kind of sword skill than luck. What IS luck anyway? Would you say that someone that wins the jackpot at a casino on his first coin is luckier than someone that sink 1000 of $ and got nothing back? What is the "lucky" guy got crushed by a falling piano while running to announce the good news to his family? Was that luck or not luck? What about the consequences of some "lucky" roll for next day? Next week?

The flaw in your argument is that, yes, sword ability was determined by a SKILL number. But Luck was determined by an ATTRIBUTE number. A skill, meaning how good one is at something, which I agree wouldn't make sense with Luck. However, an attribute refers to how much one has of something, such as Strength, Intelligence, Endurance, or in this case, Luck.

Even with a high "Luck" stat, the Random Number God can still horribly screw you over by consistently randomly generating low numbers: Getting a Win on a 15+ isn't any better than a win on a 20+ if 'real' luck causes the computer to generate only 1s and 2s except on the 'rolls' that don't matter.

I have played so many characters in this game that one time my sole purpose was to increase my luck at all possible times. Ultimately it never "seemed" to really impact anything. I think the character model was flawed though since every time I leveled I wasn't focusing on the things that would really help me.

Good point. I am a fan of no attributes especially luck. After countless hours playing Obivion I realized how much I can do without the attributes and give other skills in the game some flavor, and I believe Skyrim is doing just that despite what some people may think.
