Removal of Classes

Would you guys have removed the classes? Did you think they were well implemented or useful at all? What are your feelings on Skyrim's take on levelling?

I think it makes perfect sense. Instead of sitting there trying to decide what you want to be in hopes that you don't make a mistake, just play the game and make it as you go.

I'm not angry at all. It makes much more sense.

I never liked Bethesda's classes; I always designed the character that I wanted

Some games I like classes, others I don't care about. I don't see what the big hang-up is since folks can still role play in either case

No I'm not mad at all. There were never any real classes in the character selection, just suggested Major Skill templates.

I was happy to see them go, and the system that was implemented is closer to what I've always wanted them to do anyways.

Am I mad about classes being removed? Not really. I would've preferred them left in, along with birthsigns... but it's no big loss.

What I am mad about however is the changes to attributes and skills - as this has directly impacted the way I roleplay in TES games. Not only am I not convinced at all by the perk system - but i'm not convinced I'll even be able to properly focus on the things I usually focus on most (speed, agility, acrobatics).

I liked making my own class. It helped me focus on what character I wanted to be.

All classes were was a name. I'm going to miss the name, but you can do everything you could do before.

Well, if there are perks that increase your speed and jumping abilities...? -shrugs-

Add to that the ability to dress in clothing or light armor and use lighter weaponry and there you go.

i found class thing annoying because the perfectionist side in me spent most of the game stressing out training for the +5 instead of actually enjoying the role play

Glad they got rid of classes. Plenty of other RPGs did so long ago.
I would've liked it if they'd kept some options for customising the beginning character but I can live without that.

AQ why are you glad when Classes didnt stop you? why are you glad when what made classes "annoying" -Level Scaling and M&m- are gone?

pure honest question applies to anyone.

Not only am I not mad, but I had a chance to talk to a Bethesda employee a few years ago and asked for them to take classes out... So you can hate me instead of them :)

I've played Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion and I always made a custom class whenever I could. Classes don't serve much of a purpose IMO. The direction Beth took for Skyrim is welcome.

Way back when, I used pre-designated classes, but in the more recent games, I used custom designed classes.

Other than an occupation type name, (healer, priest, battlemage, thief, etc.) I do not miss classes.

I don't remember using class at all in FO3. I dont believe there were any.

The way Skyrim is set up, I will play my first character as a shamaness named, SIbyl.

I will use the term "shamaness" when I communicate about my character to others, like on this forum.

Sibyl will use those skills that I think a shamaness would use. She won't suffer any identity crisis

I suppose NPCs will eventually know/learn of my character's actions (reputation), or will know/learn my character's name.

Not really a problem.

Because classes were useless, and no, it wasn't the level scaling that made them annoying.

And no, they couldn't fix it either without making classes more restrictive, a move they've been going against ever since Daggerfall.

Yes, I'm glad classes are gone, because they should've been gone for a long time ago!

Can I help you out. It is still Shaman, when talking about a female. Matter of fact all native Hawaiian Shamans were female. Males couldn't be Shamans. I didn't know if you knew this. Sorry for being a grammar police.

Yeah, that's what they were.

Now the main reason their existence is removed (M&m), why keep them?

Removal of classes weren't a big deal to me. However I fee they could of revamped attributed without a full takeaway.

Don't get me wrong, I feel attributes are a very weak part of Elder Scrolls. Their lack of depth and illusion of it is astounding judging by how many TES fans got mad over it even though the system was very simplistic.

You could argue no TES had a very good attribute system at all. And if you judge an RPG game by it, then no TES can be considered an RPG to you. Although they all are.

So no I have no issues with class removal. However in the next game I hope they try to input back a true attribute system akin to the combined stats&get better as you play system from Wasteland. Where Bethesda presumably got their "idea" from.

Pfft you know Im just going to go in a Bit on how they could have done something different, make it matter, etc etc you know all that cake etc etc its not like their existence stopped anyone so like the many aspects gone it still puzzles me why people say "I'm glad they are gone" when it didnt stop anything.

At first, I was pretty upset, but after hearing about this new system, it sounds better IMO. I'm willing to at least give it a chance.

I understand what you are saying here. Its not necessarily a good or bad thing for them to be gone. I didn't see a problem with the developers giving us their own custom template suggestions in the last two games. I didn't at first understand why they took it out either. But I understand now, because it doesn't make any sense whatsoever in the new system. Having said that, it doesn't really affect things negatively by taking them out.

What I would like to see are in game books devoted to pursuing those particular play styles. Like a book on thievery, or a book on the art of assassination. A book called The Way of the Warrior would definitely catch my attention and find its way onto my in game bookshelf. They would be pretty cool to read, and give you an idea of what to pursue as a play style if you wanted to go down that path.
