Sure it's nice to have a strong PC, I do, but I'd guess you have not moved your draw distance sliders in Settings. Moving them towards 100% will increase your view distance. I can sit on top of Red Rock and almost see people on the Prydwen,.
Red Rocket?
Hyperbole aside... I've sniped the Mireluk Kings on the isthmus below the Prydwen but never the Muties... (Ultra on PC).
Yup, I've mentioned this problem before. If you haven't loaded a grid properly, you're going to have pop-in's and collision issues. Long Scope is mostly pointless unless you've stepped into the grid first.
I have sniped at just about everyone, from varying locations..... The Corvega building has that nice overpass right there, and sniping from the deck of that, I can hit any of the raiders basically at will. Of course, I play on PC too..... There are MANY places that I can find a nice perch, a good distance from the target area, where the NPCs *might* figger out where I am, but, don't seem to be able to find a path up to me.

What really bothers me about the long scope is the crazy zoom. I can see the eye color of radroach from a mile away and it's almost impossible to keep anything in sight if it's moving. It would be nice if the larger scopes just offered a zoom in/out function instead of a fixed zoom.
xbox works fine, the distance you can kill something are much further than in fallout 3, the specs for an xbox one compared to any machine from the time of fallout 3 isn't even close, the memory and power is more than enough, its some other issue, the guy is probably on a low end pc actually or its something else, i can shoot anything i can see and i use a 50 cal with a long range scope and i hit enemies from pretty far away, you can hit whatever you can see basically, unless you actually play the game on an new gen console you probably shouldn't assume they're crappy cause they aren't, a lot of people play on pcs actually that probably aren't nearly as powerful as a console, not everyone is using a 250 dollar video card, most people don't actually and end up with a pc thats far weaker than a console.
300 yards? Fort Strong to the Airport is supposed to represent like 3 miles.
What are you on about? If you cared to read the other post I made, I said I didn't know of the limitations of the consoles, because I don't own one. And the OP stated he played on Xbox, so that's why I said it was to bad he couldn't tweak a thing like the depth of field, was just a statement of fact since modding hasn't come to consoles yet. I wasn't bashing on consoles, and nothing I said, was bashing, so get out of my hair please. I don't care about PC vs console nonsense since people will have a preference for one or both gaming platforms.
Can you guys on PC see what is shooting at you when you are on a vertibird? Even when I'm close to a spot I know exactly what is shooting I can never see crap on ps4.
Oh boy, where to start.
The non-tracking long-range scope has a smaller FOV than the scopes in FO3, which is rather more accurately replicated. The scope still renders the same, but you just can't see the larger area. The tracking-long range scopes have a huge FOV which I've not seen in a Fallout game I can remember. It's the only scope I put on my rifles because it's awesome and the tracking feature is nice, too.
As for sniping far distance, it's still possible, as I do it often. There's only so much range a cell will render regardless if you're using a scope or not, and I've taken out enemies on the edge of render (where they're slightly transparent as they walk the border, prior to disappearing completely, comical most of the times because their legs aren't moving as they move. Radscorpions are hilarious doing this, just as they were in FO3 (face down in the dirt, moving)).
Well of course your .50 cal is going to do less damage than your .44.
The .50 cal is a rifle, which slows the bullet and reduces impact force. Physics 101 and be sure to study kinetic energy.
So there you go. Aim up and shoot fast for the sweet kill and dinner tonight!
pardon???
being a rifle it will be 50cal BMG which is 12.7x99 rather than say AE
the bullet itself is almost the size of an entire 44 round!!
muzzle velocity of 50calBMG is say 2800-3000+ feet/sec
muzzle velocity of 44mag is 1000-1100+ feet/sec
bullet grain of 50cal BMG \is between 600 - 800ish
bullet grain of 44mag is 240-340ish
rifle barrels do not slow bullets down (maybe if you made one long enough it would) infact the longer the length of the barrel the more time gasses get to "push" against the round which increases muzzle velocity
remember its not just kinectic energy (which is mind staggering on something weighing 600-800grains and travelling at almost 3x the speed of sound!!) but the twist of the bullet when it impacts creates a seriously massive hole compared to diameter of projectile
how much impact the round irself imparts on your body is determined by the type of round eg hollow point will leave a much bigger hole than a FMJ round but will splatter against armour etc etc
the 50 cal round is so powerful that the shock wave from it can kill you even if the bullet misses!
the 50cal round is used in the anti materiel rifle, "materiel" in the military means equipment and hardware, this round takes out military vehicles
also the 50 cal round was an aircraft weaponary round too
yep the 44 is a bad ass mo fo but compared to 50cal BMG its a little street punk and nothing more, there is no way any other caliber of weapon should come even close to the damage a 50calBMG would do (well except laser/plasma as we dont have any RL comparisons for them and of course a gauss weapon in theory should do to)
Draw distance sliders are at 100%. Have been set that way since shortly after completing download from Steam.
I can see enemies further through the scope than the range of my bullets is. On PC with view range sliders put about in the half (my GPU is too weak for full view range). So the rendering distance is enough.
My .50 currently does 296 damage with Rifleman 5 perk and ignores 40% of armor. That's the beauty of playing on PC. Why should the .50 be less powerful than the stinky Gauss (sry, I don't like the Gauss).
I like the medium scope, but I can't hit much at really long range with the iron sights. The glow sights help a bit, but still not great for long range.
