Render distance isn't nearly enough to justify a long scope

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 11:25 pm

Compared to Fallout 3 the distance at which you can visibly see your enemies (Even with a scope) is ridiculously short, making sniping nearly useless.

Another issue I've noticed is that anything that you can put a scope on severely lacks in the stopping power department with the exception of the Gauss rifle.

What happened to sniping deathclaws a mile away from the top of a USAF satellite?

also my .50 cal does less damage than my .44.

Most sniping realistically is done from about 500-1000 yards, way short of a mile.

And secondly, I'm on PS4 and I have no problem shooting stuff way in the distance. Can't use VATS, but I have cleared the outside of buildings where a super mutant is barely larger than my crosshair. It's definitely longer than FO3.

Might want to check your settings. I'm on PC, maxed out settings, and actually find targets on buildings I can barely see with the naked eye. I love seeing the raiders running around wondering where that came from when one of their friends heads just explodes.

and for the lack of Power, if u are sniping that mean u will be on stealth mode and aiming for heads. i been 1 shooting everything (maybe not big monster aka Deathclaws or Miralucks) with my Sniper rifle.

I would rather argue that their are not enough easy to clear perches to use them effectively and alot of times you need to go in buildings which is all close quarters fighting for too many missions to justify only using a long range scope and nothing else.

Yup. I use a sniper rifle and the Deliverence pistol to that reason.

This. I've seen Youtube videos with piece of scenery popping into view. I have never seen that in the regular game (decent PC, high settings) unless I'm on the vertibird.

I can snipe from incredible distances with the .50 or Gauss.

I don't see a reason to put a scope on my Deathclaw Gauntlet though...

I'm not having a problem with the rendering either, but I do agree that a .50 caliber rifle doesn't do a whole lotta damage compared to other weapons in this game. I have a .44 that does about the same dmg and a .45 combat rifle that does more dmg, which I put a medium scope on and use for sniping instead now. It's become the workhorse of this game for me, using it both at long, medium and relatively short range, unless I'm indoors in which case I prefer Deliverer.

Have you tried other places? Prydwen is sort of its own cell, so might have something to do with that.

To bad you are on Xbox, since disabling depth of field might have been useful. It makes things all blurry and less detailed at distances, even when viewing it through scopes (and it looks weird, but that just me probably) Just try compare the blurryness with it on and off for instance

I swear is it too much to ask for detail that is at least equal to the previous game?

all I want to do is pop heads from a mile and a half away like i used to do in 3

You sniped from the Prydwen in FO3? As stated, I think that is your problem as it is in it's own cell.

Well, I dunno if that's the case for all console users. Would like to hear some more console users on that. But if it is a limitation for consoles, I guess you'll have to wait for mod support and in the meantime, adapt to the situation.

Might be a console limitation then. I usually find Jack standing over by the Medical building. Poor guy never knows what hits him. Guy's got crappy loot though.

it doesnt make sense for the console to have this limitation tho

I dont care if the textures are le-shiggy-diggy at long range I just want to be able to shoot people I mean if my PS3 could do it why cant muh nex gen console do it

Well, that consoles have limitations is a given, compared to higher end PC's. So not that far fetched, that rendering distance could be limited as well. They might be on the safe side of things with their limitations, that, I can't say for sure, since I don't own a console. Problem with consoles (as I see it), have always been, that when they find ways to unlock the full potential, the next gen console is about to hit the market, and they can start all over again.

But as said earlier, you just have to adapt, unless it is something that can be solved through an optimization patch or mods.

I would thing you are experiencing a console limitation. I play Fallout 4 on PC, running uGridsToLoad=11, 3840 x 2160, Textures=Ultra, Shadows=high and the remainder low to medium. When on top of the Mass Fusion building I can barely see some targets across town and have never been able to hit them even if my aim is dead on (I don't use VATS, btw). If a target is within roughly eight to nine city blocks I can hit them fairly easily. Anything above that and it is iffy, at best.

yeah is the same limitation i experience on Witcher 3 on Console. U can see this on grain fields on Witcher where u will see a Circular render where the details disappear (quiet horrible to see ) but i dont notice that on PC, i guess i Fo4 have similar issues.

I use a sniper rifle, combat rifle with a red dot sight, and a silenced heavy 10mm for that reason.

And a shotgun just in case...

I honestly don't have that problem and I'm on PS4. As I said, super mutants in my long scope that are slightly bigger than the cross hair lines and I nail them.

But fallout 3 on the PLAYSTATION 3 did not have this issue

jesus christ it's like every game dev out there is dead set on reducing the quality of the overall game in favor of muh grafix

We have a new layered armor system- it's not new you did it with morrowind and there was a ton more dif armors in morrowind

in fallout 4 there are about 5 dif types of armor

hey guys you know what would be cool, remember how in fallout 3 you could tell the difference between supermutant ranks just by looking at them? [censored] that lets make them all look exactly the same.

Sick and tired of all this backpedaling game devs are pulling
