Render window not rendering

Post » Sat Sep 12, 2009 3:54 am

It started today and I don't even have a clue of the reason.
The render window in CS don't show anything, it turned white from one day to another.
I can load .esm and .esps normally, but the render window just don't work.
I've just adjusted a bit some ini specs as light 14 instead of 16 and the like, but nothing explicitly prohibiting the CS doing its job.
"Load cells in render window" is activated, but it seems CS is unable for some reason to read the graphics card.

Anyone with a clue of this?
Reinstalling CS does not seem to solve it.

Here Briguy had http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1099245-white-render-window/ but he hadn't an apparent solution.
Switching preview window and render window does not solve the thing either.

Try http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1081511-render-window-is-grey-and-inactive/ for an answer

which has a helpful link to http://www.designamatic.com/MW-Home.html#RenderWindowGrey which says:

If you can't see anything in the Render window, here are some things to try:

1. First, make sure you are actually loading a cell to look at. When starting the Editor, be sure to select (checkmark) at least one of the master ESM files such as Morrowind.esm by double-clicking on the filename. Once that is loaded, you'll see the game's cells listed in the 'Cell Name' list. Double-click on one of those to load it. Hopefully it will show up and the items in the cell will appear in the 'Cell Contents' list just to the right. If you still can't see anything, try double-clickng on an item in the cell contents list. This will position the camera very close to the object. If this fixes the problem, you have the Editor's viewing distance set too close. Under the Editor's Preferences, change the 'Clipping Distance' to so it's farther away. When first loading a cell, you start out quite far overhead. So you may need to adjust the clipping distance to see all the way down to the ground.

2. Still have a grey Render window? Check the Windows Desktop Properties and make sure it's set for 32-bit color. Sometimes when you update video drivers, this can be changed without you knowing about it.

3. If you have an nVidia TNT-based video card, there is known problem with recent Detonator drivers. You'll have to revert to earlier ones. Some people have reported success with the 30.82 version (thanks Shiva7663) while others made it work with 45.23 or 40.xx versions. (thanks Chia) Be sure to use a 'driver cleaner' type of utility to get rid of all traces of the previous driver before installing a different one.

From DARoot in the first link you gave me :)

2: Re-set your Desktop Resolution to 640 X 480 (certainly no more than 800 X 600) and 16-bit color
(Don't panic! We'll set it back later!) This is, as I recall, what you end up with after one of those Morrowind Full-Computer lockups that involve "pulling the plug" (e.g., even Alt-Tab and CTRL-ALT-Delete cannot save you)

CS was running in 16bit color, well... 5 years struggling with CS and panicked without looking at this :banghead:
I had a bad windows closing two days ago and barely touched the computer... so I didn't realized the monitor was running under 16bit resolution.
Having that changed, of course, CS is running smoothly again.
Thanks for your patient response, Illuminiel :)
