Repair Kits

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:48 pm

I have a couple of questions regarding the repair skill, repair kits and such. What are repair kits first off, are they similar to repair hammers in Oblivion? Does the repair skill have any effect on repair kits, such as the effectiveness of them? And finally, does repair still require another one of the same item I want to repair?

I guess. You get a couple if you preorder on Amazon or something but they are like other preorder items that are already in the game they just give you them early is my assumption.

i really dont know cause i thought that repairing was the same as f03 as in you repaired 2 of the same type of gun to together to improve the general quality and make 1 better gun.... so.... yea.... .... .

There's a perk that let's you repair weapons with similar weapons. Does that just add to the repair lists, or is it repair kits only until you get the perk?

I heard repair kits are there to use on whatever piece of equipment you wanted to repair, regardless of what it is. When you consider that in FO3, you could only fix something by having an exact copy of it (in most cases), you see how this can be handy.

So instead of a skill, it is a perk this time?

My guess is that you can always, for example, repair assault rifles with assault rifles, as well as repair kits, but the perk lets you repair assault rifles with hunting rifles and baseball bats, anything that's remotely similar. But I could be wrong, and you need the perk to repair with any other weapon.

The perk is for say, repairing a Hunting Rifle with a Varmint Rifle, you can still repair a Hunting Rifle with a Hunting Rifle regardless. I think repair kits work like repair hammers, meaning you can repair anything right there.

That is my understanding. Well, except for the baseball bat part.

Repair Kits are like the Alien Epoxy in FO3 except a bit more...realistic lol. Say if you have a 9mm pistol in poor condition and you don't have any more on you. You use the repair kit to repair it. How well it's fixed depends on you repair level.

Repair kits can be used to repair any item. Yes they are effected by repair skill. Think of them like stimpacks for your gear.

I also recall hearing JES describe this perk in one of the interviews, as described here, that allows you to repair better or more efficiently. I can't recall the details now as I'm much too old to retain information for more than a few weeks, but definitely a perk I'm going to take!

ways to repair :

- repair an item using a similar item (like in F3)
- use a repair kit (don't know how that works)
- "Jury Rigging" perk:
You possess the amazing ability to repair any item using a roughly similar item. Fix a trail carbine with a hunting rifle, a plasma defender with a laser pistol, or even power armor with metal armor. How does it work? Nobody knows…except you.

This and a few more notes on repair:

A) There is a notch on the weapon/armor status bar that defines a clear repair/maintain point. Up to the notch, your item will increase in effectiveness and if you continue to repair the item, it will add a buffer of item health that is used before the item starts to lose effectiveness. It looks to be at about 75% full repair. An item at full repair will will degrade without losing effectiveness until it hits the notch, and afterwards sill lose effectiveness.

2) Repair Skill level no longer puts a cap on how much you can repair an item. Even with a Repair of 10, you can still repair an item to full health, it just takes more like items to repair it. The higher your Repair Skill, the more effective your repairs are, ie: it takes less items to fully repair another.

III) As above, Repair Skill will probebly also effect how much item health is regained by Repair Kits. The higher you Repair Skill, the less Repair Kits it will take to fully repair an item.

I'm glad to hear what .46 ACP said about repair. In Fallout 3, the repair skill was a necessity.. Can you imagine playing through Fo3 without being able to repair your weapons beyond 30%? That would svck. Of course, it'll be challenging in NV to repair anything to 100% with low repair, but at least I won't have to max repair to max weapon effectiveness.

I'm hoping Repair Kits act like a wildcard for the regular repair mechanic--that is, if you have any in your inventory they will show up in the repair list when you repair any item.

I didn't like how the Alien Epoxy worked--you used it like an Aid item, and it applied to the weapon you had equipped at the time. ...now that I think about it, what happened if you had no weapon euipped? Would have been nice if that would allow you to repair your armour instead.

I understand that with Epoxy being added in a DLC they might have been limited in how they could implement it (they would have had to edit the repair list for every vanilla item, or edit the repair function to include epoxy). Since Repair Kits are in from the start this time, hopefully they are better integrated.

If I recall correctly, that's how it works. When you mash repair on a weapon (or armor?) you can press one button to repair with the like item selected or mash another button to repair with a repair kit.

i think the repair kits would be cool if we could repair more than just our gear like repair old computers or ventilations systems or buildings to make our own homes/forts but im guessing there just kits that you use to fix your weapons and armor when ya dont have compatible parts or there the tools you need to fix said weapons wit hte hcorrect parts ie a socket wrench set to fix your weapon as you usea kit ya break a tool in it so ya need a new kit depending on ya skill to much torque oops broke a bolt or makeshift firing pin now weapons junk until ya find another one to fix what ya broke

Repair kits were a throwback to FO1 and 2. You needed them to fix machinery in quests. Kind of like the lockpick kits that helped you not epic fail at cracking locks. They're limited to gear only in FONV.
