Replacing QTP3 with?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 8:18 am

I installed QTP3 a while ago and loved the upgrade that it brought to the visual quality of the game. After enjoying it with bad performance for a while i decided it was time to look into other options. I know there are some redo's of QTP that other modders have done that perform at a much better quality on weaker machines, but I figured it was best to get an opinion here first. So i guess my two questions are:

1. Which texture pack would you reccomend for the best performance while still getting decent quality? A more efficient version of QTP3, like QTP redimized, or some other ensemble of texture packs?

2. When I go to replace these textures, do I need to somehow uninstall QTP3? Or is it just a case of replacing the newly dled textures with the old ones?
I'd like to get the most efficient texture pack possible that still offers a decent upgrade over the vanilla ones.

Also, I sort of know what I am talking about with mods and texture replacers and the whatnot... but only SORTA, at this point.

Thanks in advance.

1. Look into Corepc's Vibrant Textures. No performance hit, and a big improvement over vanilla. May or may not be to your taste. I love 'em.

2. Yes, uninstall QTP3.

Since QTP3 is just replacer textures, you simply need to install any new textures over the existing ones. No uninstalling necessary.

I wasn't sure. Thanks.

I'll also check out those textures. If those aren't to my liking I might try one of the smaller versions of QTP3, although its nice to know that I can just overwrite them with no problem.

You'd probably want to switch to QTP3 Redimized anyway since the visual quality is indistinguishable from the full version and doesn't incur the same performance hit.

It has been years I haven't thought about QTP3.
Bomret's normal maps+Corepc's Vibrant texture and Bomret's SI textures - enough, no stuttering at all, 44 GB game runs as smooth as a lick from chocolate ice cream :D

if you're using Bomret's which needs 1 GB of VRAM then you can also use QTP3R which needs 512 MB imho...

but yes , CorePC's textures are also very good so try both and see what you like better :)

Well, that would not get rid of all of them. Just the ones that are not covered.

But, yeah, I second QTP3R even if I do run the full version. :P

I have a pretty limited system I keep finding out. I appreciate all the responses though. I am using Streamline, OSR, Quiet Feet, Operation Optimization.... I think that is it as far as my performance mods go. I might have to try QTP3R or the one thats even smaller than that. I don't know. I can function pretty happily with much lower FPS than every one else, but I do want to try to get some better performance than I am getting now.

With my modest FPS expectations in mind, any other suggestions for texture packs that might work well and look good on a card with say 256 VRAM?

Do not laugh at that.

You might want to add Optimized Distant Land MAX to your list, and make sure to pyffi all your meshes!

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19628 (lit windows at night/during rain) has no performance impact and everyone should have it.

Likewise for http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9952. Bigger impact than you'd think.

When I had a 256 MB card, I struggled with all of QTP3R installed. Which doesn't mean don't try it, but if you end up prefering it above all, you might just pick out the pieces of it that really matter to you and nuke the rest to get back some performance.

I have AWLS and optimized Distant Land Max too now that you mention it. I just installed AWLS yesterday, coincidentally. I will try out the Noise Replacer thing that you mentioned too, thank you!

I have been trying to read up on pyffi-ing things too, but I have to admit I keep getting myself confused. It reminded me why I have degrees in English and music and not in anything pertaining to computers. I tried to look up the PYFFI utility thing, and like a bunch of different things popped up that claim to do something along those lines. If you happen to know a page where the pyffi process is explained in a clear succinct manner, please post the link.

I keep discovering more and more that I need to learn to successfully mod my ES games. It's fun though.

You might be surprised at how well the skills gained from language arts and music study (logic, vocabulary, syntax, timing) translate into programming. ^_^ Don't sell your brain short.

I really hate that pyffi thing. I've used it, but it takes forever to optimize some mods. Plus I don't know which mods I need to use it on. I ended up not using them because they were too much of a hassle (5 hours to optimize something is not fun since it uses all cpu and I can't use the computer until it's done  ). I would love if the authors pyffi'd their own mods, but maybe the authors have the same issues as me (takes forever)...

Just as it would be nice if every author cleaned their mods. Sadly, many of the didn't, and they're not coming back to do so now. Neither is Bethesda.

Basically, if you want it done, it's something you need to do yourself. Takes too long? PyFFI your stuff when you're going out for the evening. When you head for school, or go to work, or before bed time. Nothing says you have to do that while you're trying to use the computer.
