Replicating Dremora Voices

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:10 pm

I've been currently playing around with Audacity and some other things, trying to create a replication of the voice of the Dremora in Oblivion.

I'm looking for advice in this regard...and I'm curious if anyone here has tried this before. I've been experimenting a little with some effects, but so far, nothing approaching the voices rendered by Oblivion.

Just in case you're unfamiliar or you need a refresher, here's a collection of taunts....

Maybe ask b3w4r3 about what his voice actors did?

As I recall it had pretty decent Dremora voice acting, though I don't think it had quite as much of the "Grinding stones in the back of your throat" effect like those taunts do.

Yeah, I'm aware of that mod, but it didn't approach the level of mimicry that I'm trying to reach here. It's those "grinding stones" that really make the voice in my opinion. Now, I realize that some of this might just be voice acting. I can do a poor imitation of the voice. But it is really poor, especially since I can't seem to get the same 'strength' of voice when attempting.

EDIT: Here's an example of just voice acting (no effects)

hopefully that works...let me know if it does...

What settings have you played with? Have you experimented much with Gverb? ( Effects->Unsorted->Gverb, in case of "no") While I was recording the Ohmes replacer for RBP, I toyed with the idea of doing a female dremora replacer as well, but couldn't quite achieve what I wanted at that time. However, I still think that with enough experimentation with Gverb, something satisfactory could come of it.

A little. The default is going to need some serious adjusting though. I'm playing with it right now, though it seems I might need a little bit of something else. It is too much "I'm in the middle of a metal room and my voice is reverberating badly" of a sound atm... Any suggestions on toning it down?

EDIT: a low roomsize and a higher dry signal level seems to be going in the right direction...

No I don't have any setting recommendations as of yet, sorry. You've likely seen this page, but I recommend bookmarking it for future reference: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=GVerb. Another interesting effect can be achieved by reversing your take using the timeline changer option, add some effects (delay is particularly good here), and then unreverse the track. That effect won't help replicate the dremora voices, but could be useful nonetheless for more general Big Bad voices.

Thanks for the link, Greenwarden.

Mind, here's a WIP where I lowered the pitch and added an adjusted GVerb effect.

Pretty iffy but hey, I'd thought I would post it anyway.

Sounds cool. Difficult to say how close it is to the vanilla effect as the Dremoras tend to "shout", but you seem to be on the right track. Not much help otherwise as I haven't edited audio much.

BTW, keeping a track on this as it would open for the possibility of female Dremoras, which I always have wanted.
