Heh, I started posting and then left the computer for a while, came back and finished post and there were a whole bunch of replies before me.
Me, I like both the Fallout 3 weapons and the recreations of the classic weapons. The Fallout 3 weapons look like weapons that the Van Graffs/Gun Runners etc could manufacture with post-apocalyptic technology. While the Plasma Defender and Plasma Caster are pre-war relics, as well as being relics from old Fallout 1 and 2.
I'm biased because I'm a big fan of the classic games - I'm the target audience that appreciates the inclusion of the classic Glock 86 and P94. I replayed Fallout 1 and 2 a few months ago and I'm two thirds of the way through Tactics.
I think the Plasma Caster is outdated looking and reminds me more of some torture implement instead of something that flings energized ionized gas-like matter around
I think what might improve the look of the Plasma Caster is if there was green electricity arcing between the claws. Like the front of the plasma pistol. I wouldn't touch the rest of the design, though, I thought they did a great job of bringing the old item picture into 3D. But from a first person perspective that metal claw thing isn't much to look at.
The other option would be to recreate the Fallout Tactics version. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Plasma_rifle_%28Fallout_Tactics%29
In fact there's already something close: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8983 A reskin of it was in EVE, and my own EWE mod, and it is in Classic Fallout Weapons. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37002
Yeah, the Defender is just underwhelming. The whole point of EW is they're weird and wonderful, having one of the best just look like a slightly bulky generic pistol is a bit of a waste.
Weird, I really like the design of the plasma defender. It is one of my favourite weapons!
Though I was disapointed that the green glow on the side is just an indicator light... in the old Fallout 1 item pictures I imagined it was a chamber containing some green glowing plasma. But the ironsights have the exact same green lights that change to orange while firing, and I can't imagine the ironsights being full of plasma.
DaiShiHUN did a good job with his own version of the Glock 86. (He made it originally for Fallout 3, after I practically begged him to make it!) http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35547 He also had the green glow on the side being indicator lights, but his are stylish, a series of LEDs that flash in sequence. But I was not a fan of his chamber on the back with the green electricity. Electricity on the front or side of a weapon, sure, but on the back seems like a recipe for injuring the user somehow. And the bright glow would dazzle your eyes and screw up your night vision.
Maybe some funky flashing LED lights like on DaiShiHUN's weapon, but with the back looking the ordinary plasma defender?
