Requiem III

Zi'Jar chuckled.

"No, the city isn't anywhere near very dangerous. In truth, I was asked to exterminate a rat nest that had infested a room here. But for some reason, no one knows of any rats in the building at all. The last time anyone has seen rats here was months ago. And the strangest thing is, is that I wasn't given a name as to who wanted these pests out."

He paused, and took a sip of his ale. He could feel the cool liquid slide down his throat.

"It's what I do, exterminations. So now I try to find all the jobs I can. Lately though, business has been a little rough. Usually my clients are inner city citizens wanting me to kill some pests, but the big jobs have stopped coming in altogether. Farmers would commonly recruit my help to kill some goblins or at rare times, a few trolls here and there. But lately, I've heard nothing from any of my usual clients, and I've heard something of a Cult having something to do with the scarce news. Have you heard anything like that?"

ooc: Long post for meh. XD

ic: Karst smiled at Kituo and chuckled. "Twin Moons? Sounds like a slang term for briasts to me." she said, placing her hands on her own for a moment. She then leaned over a bit, putting her hands back on the table, "But I did hear something about a cult. Some Legion guy was whispering with his buddies about some moon-worshiping cult. Thought people couldn't hear him, but apparently he's never been around a Khajiit before." she went on, touching one of her white ears, "I didn't hear much over the din of the taverngoers, but I heard that they've been linked to a good deal of recent crimes. That's about all I heard before I had to go deal with some drunken Imperials trying to get a Bosmer into a fight."

When Zelric made his less-than-elegant entrance, she was about to go help him up when another Khajiit came in and ordered a pair of ales. She jumped up and grabbed them for him, took his money and watched as he handed one to the Argonian. Leaning over on the bar, she smiled at seeing the kindness of the other Khajiit and the reaction of the Argonian to being stared at. Glad there's still good people around. Sometimes you wonder..
_______
Melanarde saw the Nord shove Zelric and resisted the urge to go hurt him. She watched him walk off and followed Zelric in as he got up and was given an ale by a kind Khajiit. Looking around, she saw Miak among the tavern people. She also spotted a rather well armed Khajiit man and a small, white Khajiit woman at the bar. The woman looked oddly familiar, but at first she couldn't quite place it.

Where do I know her from? she wondered as she walked in and sat next to Zelric, still looking at the woman. After a second, the girl noticed she was being looked at and met Mel's eyes, then raised an eyebrow for a moment before walking around the bar and approaching her. The Khajiit smiled as she came up to her, yet Mel couldn't recall who this pretty cat was.

"Ember! Holy crap, what're you doing here?" she asked. Only one person had ever called her that, and with a moment's thought, she came up with a name.

"Karst?" she asked uncertainly, and the girl nodded and her smile widened. Mel smiled. The two hadn't seen each other since the Crisis when they'd worked together to close an Oblivion Gate outside Skingrad. "How've you been? Studying your Daedra?"

"Writing a book on them, actually." Karst replied happily, "I've got a kid now, so I can't really field-study them anymore, but I'm writing a book based on my experiences in the Crisis. Who're your friends here?"

Mel looked over at Zelric and then over her shoulder as the others came in. "Well, this one's Zelric." she poked Zelric's shoulder, "The little Bosmer is Menelri, the cloaked Argonian she's with is Fears-Not-Death, the other one is Fin, Miak's the pretty Orsimer woman at the bar and I don't know where our other Bosmer, Taleos, is at the moment but he should be here sometime soon."

Karst smiled and nodded. "I see. I take it you're on business?"

"As always." Mel said with a laugh, "When else do I travel with other people?" Changing the subject a little, she looked to Karst and asked, "So you're a mother now? Who's the little critter's father?"

"That Indoril-clad man that we were with in the Gate. He visits from Morrowind now and then, but I still miss 'im a lot. Ra'Veldas is an amazing kid, but.." the Khajiit sighed and sat down, "He's a constant reminder of how [censored] alone I am most of the time." she finished, resting her elbows on the table and her chin in her hands. Melanarde patted her on the back reassuringly.

"Just hang in there. You'll be fine, Karst. Just take care of your kid and try to focus on the times when you're happy, okay?" Mel said in a rather motherly manner, "Why don't you sit and chat with us for a bit? I can introduce you to the group, buy you a drink or two, maybe we can cheer you up." Turning to Zelric, she smiled a bit. "What do you say Zelric? You mind if she joins us for a bit?"
_______
ooc: This part is as tiny as the character it's about! XD

ic: Menelri came in with Fears and sat down at a table, then watched Karst. She wanted to go order a bit of rum, but she didn't want to bother the obviously sad Khajiit. She took out her tomato from her pocket and fidgeted with it. "Why do you think she looks so sad?" she asked Fears as she looked back from looking over her shoulder at Karst, "You think we can cheer her up?"

Kituo stared at the bottle of beer as he considered what Karst said, turning the brown liquid in the bottle slowly. I don't think that the Twin Moons would be about worshipping a lady's chest. If guys wanted that, they'd spare the trouble of making a new cult and join a Dibella cult. Or maybe Sanguine. But violent crime... looks like I'll be making a visit to the prison. He rose the bottle and quickly downed the remainder of the beer. Once his hand was free, he reached into a pouch tied under one of the loose faulds of his cuirass and pulled out a few coins. He set them on the counter and pushed them towards the bartender. "It seems that I must take my leave now. You've been helpful." He had added a little bit more than necessary to the stack of change, but on purpose. In a quick motion, he retrieved the sword under the counter and took his leave.

Zelric was in mid-sip with his ale as the Khajiit explained, and when he got to the point of asking about the Twin Moon Cult, he almost spit the liquid out at once. Coughing, he spoke up. "Oh..ugh, well yeah. We're kind of on a little job ourselves...we're investigating that cult you just spoke of. I guess you look like you can be trusted, but kind of keep it quiet...I'm not sure who could be watching." Zelric said, looking around once again. It seemed no one was paying attention to him. That was good, seeing as he usually didn't like attracting attention as he did upon his arrival to the tavern. Once Melanarde sat next to him, he followed her gaze toward a the small Khajiit woman that was working there, and she stepped towards them, initially calling Melanarde some sort of nickname. From what was said between the two, they met during the Oblvion Crisis.

This automatically got Zelric even more interested in the woman, and he spoke up once Melanarde asked him if she could join them for a bit. "Of course, of course I don't mind...but could you answer some questions for me..?" He asked innocently, his reptilian eyes scanning her. He had such a great deal to ask her.

This Argonian's knowledge of this Cult immediately interested Zi'Jar.

"Hmm... You seem somewhat knowledgable on this "Cult", could I accompany you for awhile on this little investigation of yours? I'm in desperate need of something to do, and this seems like just the thing to get my business back up and kicking."

He glanced at those accompanying the Argonian, and lowered his voice somewhat.

"And not to be rude... But you all don't exactly look like the most able-bodied company should something go wrong."

"By the way, I almost forgot! My name is Zi'Jar, and your's is?"

Fin looked over at Zi'Jar.

"My name is Islyths-Eij. Friends call me Fin, you'll call me Islyths."

He laughed as he heard the khajiit's last remark.

"What makes you think that, little cat?"

Fears had been mostly silent since they had left the University, only nodding slightly when he'd heard Melenarde say his name.

He wasn't brooding, but was merely quietly observing. When Menelri spoke to him, he listened and thought for a moment.

He gave a sad smile to Menelri and said quietly, "I think that seeing her old fiend Miss Melenarde has reminded her of how her life must have been once. I can see it in her eyes, her actions, she was once a warrior. And now she seems to have settled down. It's only reasonable to miss what one can no longer have."

His head then tilted as he listened to the one who had introduced himself as Zi'Jar made his remark, and Fin's response to it. He shook his head with a grin on his face. Finally, some free entertainement !

Zelric nodded, and at Zi'Jar's comment, he almost laughed. "Oh, we aren't? And my name is Zelric, by the way..." He looked to Melanarde and Fin, and then to Fears and Menelri. "Well...they look pretty um...able to me...and I have magic." Zelric said, in his opposition. "What exactly looks so weak about-" The Argonian paused to take a gulp of the ale and winced at the taste he experienced. "Ugh, any of us..?" Subsequently he looked to Fin, and shook his head. "Oh, uh, no conflict please? I'm sure he didn't mean anything." The last thing the young Argonian would want would be internal conflict within the rapidly growing mass of people he was managing to gather.

"I was just laughing at what he said. Kinda funny, you know?"

He looked back to Zi'Jar.

Miak laughed softly to herself as Zelric made a bit of scene upon entering the bar. She had only met him and the rest of the group that morning, but already his clumsy manner seemed familiar, and she was relieved that they finally arrived. However, she hadn't counted on there being so many other people. Elves and Argonians all, and as she watched a Khajiit who had been in the bar began to chat with Zelric as well. Miak was a little bewildered at the different faces and apparel of them. I guess they're my companions for now, she thought, and knew that it would be best to get a sense for who they were and if they were trustworthy now, before they got going. After finishing her drink she walked over to where they had settled.

They were now engaged in conversation with the barmaid and each other, and Miak felt strange interrupting, so as she walked towards them she simply nodded to Zelric, Melanarde, and the newcomers who she didn't know to let them know she was there. She also saw Fears and Menelri sitting quietly together and had noticed the odd pair walk in with Zelric. The Argonian looked experienced, but the wood elf... Miak looked at her and didn't know what to think. She was well-equipped but strange looking, and played with a tomato like a child unable to sit still.

"You're both here about this cult, right? With Zelric?" Miak asked as she sat down next to Menelri. "He said he was meeting you for information, but I had no idea there would be so many people..." she leaned on the table, glancing over the assembled party. "Well, I'm Miak. Good to meet you."

OOC: For one, I wanna know what time zone you all are in. Because for me, it says around 2-3 in the morning when you all posted. :P

IC: Zi'Jar looked the group over again, and still came to the same conclusion.

"I've killed more menaces to society than you could ever imagine. I've been in this business for over 20 years, and I've seen my fair share."

He looked back to this Fin character.

"And trust me, experience here is everything."

He gulped down the last small bit of ale he had and sat the cup down, sighing.

"I don't mean to sound condescending to you all, I'm sure you have ample combat experience, but in these woods, you can find there are much more dangerous things than just mere forest creatures. These cultists are just the example of what I'm talking about. Every single one of my contacts hasn't alerted me about recent critter nests or goblin gatherings in weeks. And trust me, coming from that lot, that seems like an era rather than what it actually is,which, honestly, gives me a bad feeling about whatever is going on in those woods."

Zelric considered what Zi'Jar has said, and then adopted a look that seemed to say 'oh gee..'. "Oh...so you mean to say that the cultists we're after could be really, really dangerous??" He asked him, now further intrigued with the cult. He was puzzled internally as to why Karst didn't answer him yet, but it was probably for the best, as he had many questions to ask her about the Oblivion Crisis...and about the cult that started it all. He figured that knowledge of that cult might help in some way, but he wasn't too sure yet. "I haven't traveled around Cyrodiil in a while, so...I don't know what's out there anymore...or if they still are there. You know, like...Minotaurs?"

OOC: Right now it's 7:20 here in Texas. Which is kind of like Central Time, I think.

OOC: Ok, then we are in the same time zones, and you all just stay up later than I do.

Stupid marching band. Bah!

:P

"Well, Minotaurs are always an option I suppose. I remember this one time..." His mind wandered off to past times and adventures, and he quickly snapped back into reality.

"I'm not sure on the specifics, it just worries me that this cult would take such violent action against farmers and other harmless citizens. So I figure, no matter how able-bodied you are, an extra hand can't hurt since we really aren't positive on what we're up against."

He was more worried than he let on though. Most cults wouldn't try to harm those around them unless they had a sinister purpose about them. The Daedric Cults had always bothered him, and they didn't even try to harm others unless provoked. But the blatant striking out at citizens chilled Zi'jar to the bone.

"So anyways, what is our move from here? Are you all going to any particular spot, or just moving at random, trying to uncover whatever information might come our way?"

Fin shook his head slowly at Zi'Jar's remarks.

"You dont know about menaces to society until you face down three werewolves, kid. Or until you live for three years on Solsthiem. But whatever."

Fin turned his attention back to Zelric.

"Yes, oh young argonian mage, where to?"

ooc: Apologies for my absence. Been doing moving work for my dad.

ic: "I see.. I hope she feels better." Menelri said after Fears answered her question. She sat there for a moment longer before Miak sat down next to them. The small elf looked over as the half-orc sat next to her and just stared dumbly at her for a moment as she spoke. When Miak was done, Menelri smiled kindly up at her and responded simply and bluntly. "Nice to meet you, too, Miss Miak. You're awful pretty for an Orc." she said cheerily, happy to have more company.
_______
Karst became lost in her own thoughts for a bit after the end of Melanarde's question to Zelric. It took her a moment to realize she was being spoken to. Looking down at the coins Kituo had left for her, she grabbed them and slipped them into her pocket, looking over just in tome to see the door close behind him. Damn, I didn't get to say 'You're welcome' or anything.. [censored].

It took the stressed Khajiit another second to realize and register Zelric's words to her, and upon realizing she'd spaced out and ignored him, blushed pink on the cheeks under her snowy fur. Turning her attention to the Argonian, she sighed.

"Sorry.. I just got lost in my own little world there for a second." she explained quickly with a small twinge of shame at her distractability, "I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have, but I might have to get up and tend to people in the middle of it. After all, I'm running a business, but I can make time. Gods know I welcome any pleasant break in the monotony of my life in this place. Most other changes of pace are just a brawl breaking out.."

Karst's ears flicked back as she explained this, an indication she was clearly unhappy with her current job and situation, but what could anybody do about that? Hell, even Karst herself was at a loss for solutions, but she still hoped that maybe someday someone would offer her a better, safer job that she could feel proud of instead of one she had to keep her son away from for his own safety.
_______
Melanarde smiled as she observed Karst spacing out for a moment and wondered what life as a mother had done to her. The girl seemed so.. melancholy. She'd been lively last she'd seen the small Khajiit, funny and full of humor, sarcasm and wit. And even still, until reminded of the man she'd once been with, she'd seemed happy.

She must be heartbroken, the father of her child away in a distant province, unable to provide her and her son with the love, care and support they need. Taking care of her son and herself falls solely on her shoulders. Mel thought, feeling pity and sympathy for Karst, I can't imagine what suddenly having to care for a child alone would do to such a wild and independent person like her. I bet it must be hell, and with having to work in a bar to top it off?

Reaching over, Mel quietly took one of Karst's smaller, furry hands. The Khajiit looked up, a bit surprised. "Just hang in there, okay, Karst?" Mel said kindly, "If there's anything I can do to help a single mother out, just let me know."

Karst nodded and smiled a little reluctantly in appreciation, but then shook her head. "I couldn't accept anything. I don't want to be a burden to anyone. You have your own life." Karst said sadly, envy of the Altmer's freedom plain in her voice. Melanarde smiled and shook her head, patting the back of Karst's hand.

"Nonsense. I'd be happy to help, at least while I'm already here. In fact, why don't you unwind a bit with everyone and I'll tend the bar. I've done it before, years ago, but I think I can remember how."

"But.." Karst began to protest, but Mel tapped a finger on the woman's furry nose, causing her to blink her eyes shut and flick her ears back for a moment.

"No excuses. From the sounds of things, you work far too hard as it is. Just sit on your ass and be lazy for a bit, okay? Have a few drinks and relax." Mel insisted, not giving Karst much of a choice. Karst opened her mouth to argue, then realized it was pointless and sighed, then looking up, smiled.

"Thank you, Ember." she said meekly. Mel walked off for a moment, grabbed a mead and chilled it, then set it in front of Karst and immediately dug the change out of her pocket to pay for it so she could drop it in the till once she got back to the bar.

"You're most welcome." Mel replied as she went off to check on customers and see if they needed more drinks. Karst felt a bit awkward having someone buying her a drink in the very bar she was supposed to be running, but accepted it, pulling the cork out and taking a deep drink. After setting the bottle down, she sighed.

"She's a hell of a friend." Karst said more to herself than anyone else, then looked to Zelric, "So, what did you want to ask?"

Fears ran a quick eye over the orc who had sat down. The first thing he noticed was that, given her complexion, she was not fully orcish; however, he decided not to bring it up.

He looked at Miak and gave a warm smile, lowering his hood as he did so, exposing his tattoos. "Hello Miss... Miak was it? I am Fears-Not-Death. This is Miss Menelri. As she has already said, It is good to meet you. Would you like a drink?" he asked, trying to be friendly.

He marveled at how much he had changed in only a day. a day before, he would have only said the bare minimum required, and he certainly wouldn't have offered to buy someone a drink. Ever since I saw Menelri, he thought, I somehow sensed it would change me. I guess it's happening sooner that I thought.. though that's not exactly a bad thing...

IC:

Fin slammed his tale down upon a rat. Still alive and dazed, he slammed his boot down upon its skull and used his tale to swipe it over to the feet of the angry Nord. Laughing a bit, he spoke. "Hey, Nord, a free meal! It might have even svcked up some spilled beer. Mmmm, would you love that." Fin smirked, crossed his arms, and leaned back against the wall. He turned his head to Zelric. "So, whats our next move?"

OOC: Ah. I've been away for a while, guys. But since things have calmed down, I thought I should at least post something in this RP, since it is mine. I feel really immature for not doing much aside from appointing Aula to be the leader while I'm gone. I admit that once I come back, I may be a little slower than usual. Sorry for the inconvenience.

IC: Zelric looked to Karst, and then to everyone else for what seemed like the thousandth time to him. "Well...if you're busy, maybe I could ask you the questions when you're not working, Karst...I mean, I do have multiple questions. They can wait, though. Of course they can." He seemed bothered and abstract, looking around the group yet again. I haven't ever partook in such an odd job...we have so many people willing to help already, but...I'm sure that means we'll be safe, right..? We shouldn't have to fight much...if at all...right? He asked his inner self, who gave no reply. After a moment of waiting for one, he felt foolish. Now I'm talking to myself; that's just great. Perfect. ...I'm doing it again. He conflicted inwardly, not paying attention to Melanarde's offer to help out with the bar while Karst took a brief break. He only heard bits and pieces, but it was enough for him.

"Well...the cult you were after: How did they operate? Do you have an idea, or did you only just find them and fight them? I mean, I'd really like to know...did they hide in caverns or in towns? Both?" He started, spacing out his questions a little more. "I think those questions are good for now..." The Argonian said in a lower voice, flexing his grip upon the container of ale he held.

ooc: Rawr, where has Orestes gone off to? =(

ic: Melanarde was quite busy as several new customers had come into the establishment and a few others had ordered refills, but she managed to keep one pointed ear tuned to the group's conversations. She was interested in hearing of Karst's experiences with the Mythic Dawn herself.

Over at the table, Karst languidly sipped her mead, a drink she only usually drank when happy as she preferred whiskey when she was depressed, but she wasn't about to turn down a free drink from a friend, especially if it was one she liked. Wonder how she knew I liked mead, anyway? She wondered, looking at the bottle a moment before turning to face Zelric.

Looking at Zelric, Karst felt a smile tug at the corners of her mouth at seeing the ambitious innocence of youth in his eyes and face. His unstained white clothes told her he likely didn't see much, if any, combat, though that seemed fitting with his magelike appearance. Though what she'd been through had shaped her into the person she was today, Karst envied the young mage's innocence. For a moment, she just looked him over, noting the cream colored skin and scales varying between shades of green and blue, the pointed snout and blue streaks on his cheeks. The little circles of green around his eyes complemented their blue hue, in her opinion. She'd always thought that Argonians were a particularly interesting and beautiful people, and looking at him she recalled why she thought this. They're just so.. exotic and unique. She thought and allowed herself to smile fully at him after examining him for a few seconds.

"Well, Zelric, in all brutal honesty I paid less attention to the Mythic Dawn and their habits than I did the Deadra I had to fight, but I'll see what I can recall for you. And don't worry about asking too many questions; I'm always happy to assist a fellow researcher." she said gently, tapping her pointed, clawlike nails on the glass bottle in her hand. She took another gulp of the cold honey liquor, sighed and placed a hand on her chin.

"Let's see. They had a base in a cave near Cheydinhal, which I could actually take you to if you'd like sometime if I can get a sitter for my brat. Not sure what'll be left of it, but there might be something of interest to you. Mostly they worked out of sight of regular society, but sometimes someone would attack in the middle of a town randomly, though they were usually put down by the guards rather quickly. I can't recall there being many hideouts in towns, though some occasionally plotted in their homes; had to put down a couple of them in Bruma once."

Looking up to him, Karst frowned a little. "I can't really recall much more than that. Sorry, kid."

OOC: I didn't go off anywhere... just been forgetful and at a loss for what to post  . Sorry to contribute to a slump there.

IC:
Miak looked surprised at Menelri's compliment and haltingly said, "I... uh, thank you." She wondered at the odd pair sitting there. Menelri looked like a rogue or even a pirate, but acted and spoke like a child. What she could possibly have to do with this cult was completely beyond Miak. Fears, on the other hand, was polite but more reserved, like most Argonians she had met tended to be with other races. And yet he seemed to be completely comfortable with this odd girl.

Miak collected herself. "Good to meet you too, Fears-Not-Death, and Menelri. I've already had a drink while I was waiting so I'm fine, thanks." She sat quietly for a moment, watching the others talk. "You know, it's strange for so many people to all be after the same thing. I hadn't even heard of this cult before today, and here are so many people, just... talking. I wish we were tracking or fighting them, but no one knows what to do now." Fears, at least, seemed to her like the kind of person who understood what she meant. She was pleased to meet such nice people, but sometimes she just wanted to go to work, and the ambiguity of their current situation didn't suit her.

"Nothing for me to do but keep an eye on Zelric and the rest until he figures it out, then. What about you two," she asked, "what's your stake in this?"

Fears smiled. "I know what you mean. I was a wanderer before all this happened. I'm not used to spending more than a few hours in any given city, long enough for a meal and sleep." He took a swallow of the wine he'd ordered earlier and grimaced. "I should have ordered water. I've never liked alcohol." he paused for a few seconds to clear the taste from his mouth.

"As for why I am here, I have made a promise to stay with Miss Menelri. It is up to her to say why she is here. I do not like speaking of other people's affairs." He idly ran a hand over his tattoos, a reminder of his visits to Black Marsh. This is all too sudden, he thought. Just a day ago I was planning to leave in a few hours, and now I'm here with a group of people trying to stop a cult I hadn't even heard of until today. It's just insane.

Zelric didn't say much else for a moment, taking in what she had said, and her offer to take him to an ex-hideout. So if the Mythic Dawn didn't actually do too much in public, then does that separate them entirely from the Twin Moon? I recall news of their slander being carried over from here to Leyawiin...and that most of their public activities were here. In this very city...I wonder... He thought, cooking up a plan of some sort.

"Alright, thanks...it's good that you gave me what you remembered. And who knows...maybe I'll take you up on that offer sometime- so long as you find a sitter, of course." He said to Karst, nodding politely as a sign of thanks. "But for now...I feel we may have work to do in the city...if you don't mind, I'd like to be off. We have something being examined at the University, and we are just about bound inside of the city walls. I was thinking we could split up and question some people about the cult and their activities...or any suspicious people they know to be in league with them. Who knows...maybe we'll find something out before our little mystery is examined."

OOC: Umm, Ive got nothing to say here. Anyone? Did youz forget it because it lagged back to the fourth page, or do you have stuff going on at home which would require the facilitation of a pause in the story?

Fin grinned. "So, oh glorious young leader, where would you have me go?" Fin laughed a bit. This tadpole was getting caught up in more trouble than he would have thought possible.
