PC Requirement guesses

My take purely for gaming capability:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2Ghz 6MB Cache FSB 4000MHz HT

While better than the Athlon II X4, with your budget I'd cut the corner and put the money towards a better GPU.

Arctic Cooling ACALP64PWM Ultra Quiet Fan/Heatsink (not sure if I will need this or not)

If you are not Overclocking, you don't need it. It is not needed for overall playability, cores count more than clockspeed. Save $15 to put towards a better GPU.

ASUS M4A87TD EVO (AMD 870, 2xPCI-E, 6xSATA2, 4xDDR3)

Do you need 2-PCI-E? This would be for Crossfire [2- ATI Video Cards]. 2nd slot could also be used for a Dedicated Physx GPU, but you'll need hacked drivers if you want to do this with an ATI video card as your GPU. If you are fine with just one GPU and overclocking isn't very important, grab the cheaper MSI [Avoid ECS] and put the money towards a better GPU.

4GB (2GBx2) PC3 12800 DDR3 1600Mhz Memory Lifetime Warranty

RAM's Clock Speed doesn't really matter, especially over 1333MHz. Also, higher speed = higher latency which counteracts the small gains made from faster RAM. Grab the 1333MHz and save a few bucks here.

1TB 7200RPM 32MB Cache Serial ATA300 (Major Brand)

Nice HDD. You could save $21 towards a better GPU by getting the 500GB and adding another later on. Adding a HDD would be a good 1st project as it is not too complicated

22X LG SATA Dual Layer DVD+/-RW/CDRW w/Nero

1GB ATI Radeon HD5770 GDDR5 PCI-E DVI/HDMI (Major Brand) (I know it's not the cream of the crop but it seems to do well in benchmarks...plus I can always upgrade to a better card next year or etc)

I'd go with the HD6850, which if you get a 2 PCI-E mobo will allow for cheap Crossfire later on.... sometime around November. The 256bit bus allows for much better memory bandwidth than the 5770's 128bit.

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Acer 22in Black 1680x1050 LCD Flat Panel Monitor 5ms Widescreen DVI

Buy separately from Newegg and save $30-$50

Raidmax Black/Silver Skyline (5 5.25, 5 3.5) 3 Fans, Audio/USB

NXZT M59

**********650watt Stock Supply**************

DO NOT BUT QUESTIONABLE POWER SUPPLIES. I've encouraged you to cut every possible corner so that you can better where it counts... there is no corner to cut here. OCZ is not terrible, but Antec is much better for just a little money, so get the EA650.

A CHEAP PSU CAN KILL YOUR OTHER PC COMPONENTS!! ...I doubt that PSU is capable of 500w, much less 650w and I doubt it has any overvoltage protection.

Onboard LAN included
Wireless B/G/N PCI Adapter
Onboard Sound included
Black PS2 Internet Keyboard
Black USB Optical Mouse with Scroll
120mm Case Fan

Thanks for your detailed response. That gives me a lot to consider.

And yes my PC can run Oblivion at recommended system requirements, but takes a heavy FPS hit when either I have 30-40+ NPCs in 1 small area(especially when they all have their torches lit at the same time), 30-40+ enemies/creatures attacking me at the same time, or when using the Oblivion mod known as RAEVWD! SO will my PC be able to handle playing SKyrim when it comes out? If not, I still got an XBox 360 that I had since Feb. 2007 (still the vanilla white color model with a 20 gig external HD).

If your computer can play any multiplatform games then yes. It can play Skyrim.
My guess...
Minimum
OS: Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor: 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory: 1 GB RAM for Windows XP / 2 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Graphics: 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support)
DirectX?: DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
Hard Drive: N/A
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible
Supported Chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required.
Recomended
OS: Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor: 2.6+ GHz Core 2 Duo Intel or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, or better recommended
DirectX?: DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
Hard Drive: N/A
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible

I actual just copied and pasted Mass Effect 2s requirements from Steam. They aren't the same game, but they are both multi-platform.
I think the OPs minimum system requirements are exaggerated. You wish the requirements are going to be that high.

High requirements =/= Better game.

It's exactly the opposite.Look at Crysis 2 ,and than Half Life 2.Graphics are nothing but baloon.

Min req:

Core 2 Duo processor
1 GB ram
GF 9800

Recomended:
Core i3/5/7 processor
2 GB ram
GTX 400's...unfortunately feels like that...

That's a ridiculous comparison. That's like telling me that new printing techniques make for worse books, and then using Bladerunner and Twilight as an example. Because there's a lot more past than present, obviously there were more excellent games released in the past than there have been in the immediate present, and graphics weren't as good back then. If you want to make that comparison, use two games from the same approximate time.

With the confirmed new engine, I think it is far more difficult to estimate, and I personally feel that the requirements for PC will actually go up, because Bethesda might scale the PC version to utillize DX 10 or 11, (for example, Just Cause 2 actually requires DirectX 10 as a minimum requirement). Now, granted, since TES V is multiplatform, there will have to be "give and take", but I still hold that with the new engine, scaling can be, and will be, utilized to allow for a completely different experience on the PC, to the point of being able to fully take advantage of DirectX 10.1 / 11. I also believe that the CPU requirement for PC will go up, if not number of cores, then at least clock cycle.

Just cause only uses DX 10 cause they were paid off by micro$oft for doing so.

In any even, I 'd expect the requirements will not change too much from OB, actually. That's just how games have been for the last couple years.

Whether that is or is not true, they make good use of the technology. DX10/11 are not just a marketing gimmick, however much you want to stay on a decade old OS.

I don't see skyrim making use of anything but dx9. Just got that feeling....

Pc will make use of higher textures and resolution and thats it. Consoles seem to be more of a priority and its their cash cow for providing an income for future developments/projects.

This has nothing to do with books =/ Books always sell because of their content, wheter you personally like it or not.If one goes and buys(or doesn't buy) a book because of the cover or print quality, than there's something wrong with that.
And actually this is the case with games. There are lots of people who get the game for its "cover" or print quality, regardless of the content and I can not understand this, nor feel like debating, for views would not change.

However,I'd like to clear the Crysis 2 and Half Life comparison.I'm not trying to say Half Life 2 has lower reqs in comparison to Crysis 2.
Crysis 2 has high requirements in comparison to the games being released today. All because of graphics.Subtract them and tell me what we have different than any shooter from 10 years ago.
Half Life 2 had low -at least decent reqs for a game of that time. And it was not just "any shooter".And not just because of its graphics.Even if you took the graphics out, you'd have a story and characters left.
HL2 is a better game than Crysis 2 even today for me,and while I acknowledge the graphical quality of Crysis,it's only show and doesn't help the story IMO.Not to mention its the only reason the specs are so high.

Yes, HL2 is a much better game. That has absolutely jack [censored] to do with the system requirements, a good game is a good game. A good game with good graphics is better than a good game with bad graphics, even though the one with bad graphics is still a good game.

My point is that your point is false and your comparison is flawed. Super Metroid is one of the best games ever made - is that because it is a 16 bit 2D game? No, it's because it's [censored] excellent. There are no other considerations there, it is a good game because of how it plays, and how it looks has no direct impact on that. If it looked better, it would be a better game (Though because people always take things the wrong way, "better" is not moving towards some hyper-realistic ideal, and to automatically assume that better graphics are moving towards one style is to discount an entire artform).

The comparison with books *is* valid. People read books because of their words, and they play games because of their gameplay. If the book is printed on low quality paper in difficult to read typefaces, it's still a good book, but if it is printed on high quality paper in an easy to read typeface, it is better. What you are saying is that better graphics actively make a game worse, which is a statement that doesn't hold up to even the smallest critical thought.

I will be one of the many people who will be upgrading for Skyrim. What do you guys think about graphics cards? I currently have a GTS250 and I want to upgrade to maybe a GTX460. Do you guys reckon that would be suitable for the highest settings?

I also have a 3.0GHz dual core processor and 4gb ram. Windows 7

EDIT:

But i think if you want run it ALL eye candy, everything maxed out at 1080p then you'll probably need a system with CPU running at 3.6Ghz or more and graphics card like Nvidia GTX 460-470 or AMD HD 5850-6870. Because my HD 4850 was not enough to max out Fallout 3 @ 1680x1050. I was still netting avarage 45-50 FPS with my 4850 Crossfire system. Go figure what TES V is going to take to run fluid 60 FPS constant @ 1080p.
[/quote]
3.6GHz WTH!!??

maybe something like 2.6Ghz quad core or 2.8Ghz quad.......intel ofcourse :)

I have a 4850 with 1gb of vram and a AMD Phenom 9950 (2.6ghz), which I think will be fine to run the game, considering my monitor's native resolution is only 1360x768. I'm thinking about upgrading to a higher res monitor, though, probably 1920x1080, in which case I will most likely get a GTX260.

I would expect even the 250 will run it at its highest settings as long as you dont have too large a monitor.

I'm hoping they'll drop XP support.

In fact, I'll be surprised if most games still support XP by the end of next year.

Nooo!! I love XP!!

I actually did a presentation on Windows XP for university a few months back, its surprising how many people still use it. I guess its because people didnt want to upgrade to Vista due to the problems with it, and now just don't want to upgrade to 7!

Although, seeing as I could only just about manage to run Oblivion and Fallout 3, I'm pretty sure that I will have to get a new PC!

Also, Im tired of seeing all these amazing screenshots of these games and only being able to play with very low settings!!

Question: What do you guys mean when you say you hope that it can utilize quad-core processors?
I was planning on getting a quad-core, so what happens if it doesn't utilize them?

I agree. This is a pretty important point too. New Vegas was built with five year old technology, and my computer started chugging when things got busy. It seems to me that some portion of the engine they had been using was either bloated, or horribly horribly inefficient in some way. I fully expect that my computer will be able to run Skyrim with all of the settings cranked up at 1920x1080 with a fairly decent frame-rate (50-60 fps).

Specs:

Phenom II X6 1090T
RADEON HD5850 CrossfireX
4 gb ram

Comparing Skyrim to games like Crysis, DA2, or anything else is a bad idea. Yeah, some of the games have better graphics, but none of them are open-world, and few (if any) of them have the NPC AI requirements that BGS games have.

If Skyrim is anything like previous BGS games, CPU will play a much bigger role than in most other games, because of NPC AI. This won't be a factor in a vanilla install because it'll be tuned for consoles, but once you start modding in extra NPCs, it will matter. Scripts from mods might have a small but noticeable effect as well.

I am going to upgrade for SR, even though my current rig can run FNV beyond max(I have Ugrid at 7 instead of 5 and some lod stuff beyond the max ingame options). I want to be able to run SR above max and take advantage of high end graphic mods. So I will be getting a new video card and perhaps a SSD.

As for the system req, I assume they will be about the same as FNV and using the DX11 optimizations Todd was talking about the game will run even better than past games.

Oh and todd actualy answers this question in one of the recent interviews/previews... It seems even a vaugely recent computer will in fact run the game just fine. So no you wont need massively powerful anything.
