PC requirements for Skyrim

Post » Mon Jan 31, 2011 12:47 pm

I'm not sure if there already is a topic considering this, but I didn't find one.

I Just want to know the PC requirements for Skyrim, as my current computer probably cannot run Skyrim. Especially after seeing the trailer I was kinda sure for that.

My current computer specs:
-AMD Phenom II X2 550 processor, ~3,1 GHz
-4096MB RAM
-nVidia GeForce GTS 250 graphic card
-Windows 7 32-bit
-DirectX11

I think that I should update my graphic card and processor, not sure about other stuff

Unless someone can look into the future there is no one who can tell you the sys req yet. Even the devs don't know yet. But I will say that if I was you I would wait with the upgrades after you get the game and see how well your rig runs the game. You might be satisfied with the performance, who knows.

Get 64-bit Windows
Get more RAM (as much as you can afford/fit after CPU + Video Card)
Get a new CPU (4 core minimum, I recommend the Phenom 965s or 1055s, they're quite good for their price points)
Get a new graphics card ($200-250 range one should be good enough)

RE Ken: There's a few things we can be certain of:
You can never have too much RAM
a two core CPU will be brought to its knees by this game if current titles out right now are any indication of what's to come in the next year
a GTS 250 is getting dated

That might do. Won't be playing it on high (And you should really get a 64bit edition of windows, you're already over the addressable limit) but until we know otherwise that seems like it'll play it decently, considering it runs on console too.

I don't think that's neccissarily true. To play it at a medium-high quality, you can expect to have a computer equivalent to the Xbox 360. I'd say a dual core 3ghz would be fine. I have an E8400 and the only game my computer had trouble with is Shogun 2. Even then I was still playing at high settings. Keep in mind that trailer was created using the 360.

Use the 360 as a guage. Anything higher than that will be worth the effort.

My PC has very similar specs as the OPs and I can run all the new games I have bought on high in 1980x1080 without trouble. So unless the OP absolutely wants to run Skyrim at high quality settings and in a high resolution, I don't think he should preemtively upgrade his PC.

Why are you running 4GB plus additional VRAM on a 32bit OS?

Go x64.

-You'll run Skyrim and you will not look any worse than all the stuff that we've seen as it comes off the 360.

-There is no telling if quad core CPUs will be utilized fully or provide significant gains over dual cores yet.

-More GPU can't hurt, but Skyrim is a GPU lifetime away. Time is on your side and you can pick your price point. I'd look at the GTX560 or HD 6870 [or better] or the next gen of AMD/Nvidia. And make sure you PSU can handle what you get.

For all we know, no. Perhaps. It had better, but we don't have system specs yet so your guess is as good as mine.

High end/ Medium Oblivion release date equipment should be minimum Skyrim equipment.

So you're looking at

2.5 GHZ Dual-Core processor
2 GB RAM
15 - 20 GB HDD space
and then something around the 120's out of this list: http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html

The system requirements for Oblivion is pretty heavy (I think) even though the game is from 2006 (it's 2006, right?). My PC has good specs, but I don't think it runs OB flawlessly with big graphic enhancing mods such as Qarl's texture pack and at high video settings. So I'm thinking the system requirements probably will be pretty high, maybe higher than some of us expect.

No. Sorry but you are going to have to wait for upgrades that havn't even been invented yet.

We get these posts daily, grrr!

The best thing you can do is either:

1. Wait until the specs are released, upgrade then
2. Buy the best you can afford now and hope for the best.

My personal recommendation would be to wait because you also gain the benefit of time....in time all hardware drops in price. You might be able to afford the next step up in video cards or other hardware closer to November since they may be had for a cheaper price.

Short answer: WAIT!

Will my PC run Skyrim?

I7 970 @ 4 Ghz
Asus Rampage III Extreme
12 Gb 1600 Mhz ram @ 6-7-6-18 1T
SLI GTX 560s
Raid 0 Samsung F4s with a backup drive + 64 Gb SSD for windows
Windows 7

Should I upgrade to 24 Gb ram and a 128+ Gb SSD? And maybe tri SLI GTX 580s?

......

I can't say what the specs will be and I could be wrong but I'm not worried I have 3gb ram 2.3ghz quad core and Nvidia GTS 450 1gb and I expect to be able to play it decently. I think your PC maybe able to handle it as well. But we really do get a lot of these posts on a daily basis. Like everyone else has said wait until the specs are released and act accordingly. :D

Oblivion's requirements are so high because the game is absolutely abysmally optimised, there isn't even culling for things you can't see. Everything is drawn.

Kinda understand, but not fully. Can you give an example? As you probably understand, I don't know a lot about this stuff :P So do you think it's not going to be like that in Skyrim?

It means that if you stand in front of a wall, the game is still drawing everything behind the wall. If you look at a hill, it's still drawing everything you can't see. Fallout 3 *does* cull things you can't see, and the performance difference is very large. That Oblivion didn't and Skyrim does actually gives bethesda a lot more power to throw around, meaning that actually, skyrim would look much better than oblivion.

people make so much idiotic topics atm, wait just wait, they'll say it out in some months.

And beside, the best time to upgrade would be in november, when prices have gone down a bit - no point of upgrading now if game comes out in november and ur up for morrowind mostly.

I'm upgrading my computer in sept-nov - summertime = no gaming that much.
