Research of predicting personality traits using Skyrim playe

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 12:48 am

Hello, fellow gamers. I am trying to conduct a fairly short questionnaire on how individuals play Skyrim to assist in predicting personality traits. The main focus is the quasi-Freudian theory that people use video games as an outlet to act out - via avatar - their inner desires, and hidden morals and beliefs without fear of social or societal judgement or ostracization.I will also use any demographic information collected to better understand age, racial, and gender differences in play styles, as well as possible educational and economic level differences, if any.
You can feel free to post in this forum or send me a message via inbox.
Your help is appreciated.

Bards aren't really comparable to the College, and the Blades would be better compared with the Greybeards. J/s

Do you lie - when it is an option - to receive a greater reward or information?: Only if it's needed to finish a quest but never for personal gain or monetary gain, for exp in the riverwood quest were the 2 guys want you. to give a false letter to camilla( I think is her name) I always tell the other guy about the letter.
Do you enjoy learning about the land and people of Skyrim and the history of Tamriel?: yes thats why I explore so often.
Does listening to a NPC's story affect any decisions you make?: most of the times but not every time.
Do you think you could be a better leader than any of the guild/faction leaders. How about the Jarls or even a King?: some of the jarls yes, espacially the Falkreath and markath jarl, I was actually diasapointed you could not become a jarl.

Things aren't going your way, do you turn off the game, or do you revert to a previous save to try again?: If bad enough revert to other save but mostly tank through it but never turn off game.
How do you view the zoomorphic races? Elves? Humans?: I strongly dislike elves mostly because there arrogant, I destroy Thalmor on sight, Humans are Humans though some good some bad I still kill the bad ones race doesn't factor in all that much for me.

Do you perform tasks in your own way, or to-the-letter?: My own way.
Stormcloaks or Imperial Legion?: Imperial Legion
Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood?: Dark Brotherhood
Is marriage more of a business transaction than about affinity for a NPC?: Affinity for npc, which is why I don't get married to often in this game because it feels so water down, it feels like my wife is just there for me to farm gold... So I realy only marry npc that can become followers.

If you use magic, what do you use it for? Summoning my small army or healing and buffing rarely use destruction highest its ever been is 30ish.
If you use stealth, what do you use it for? Only for quests Like to brake into a area to get a letter that proves some one is dirty.

I spaced out the 2 liners so it would be easier to read and also there may be a few typos did not spell check and am horrible at spelling.

Demographic Questions

1. *Age: 25
2. *Race: Caucasian
3. *Gender: Male
4. *Education: Some College and trade school
5. *Occupation: Currently laid off. What I actually do is optimize assembly lines for various companies. Like go and explain to them how they could rearrange things to get better time/effort/efficiency out of their equipment. Laid off because the factories are hit hard around here with the economy. :(
6. Preferred media source(ex. internet, radio, television, newspaper, etc.): Internet. Haven't actually listened to the radio or watched TV in months. I don't even have a TV
7. Preferred mode of transportation(ex. walking, bicycle, public transportation, car, truck, van, SUV, hybrid, etc.): I own my own car. 2003 Mustang GT Convertible.
8. *Criminal history: Y or N? Two misdemeanor convictions. One unconvicted felony (was dropped because they realized it was the stupidest thing ever and we weren't guilty at all.)

Skyrim Related Questions
These will apply to the main avatar you use, or the one that feels closest to YOU
Approximate Age: Mid 40's or so.
Race: Nord
Gender: Male
Aptitude(Stealth, Combat, Magic, or mixed?): Combat/stealth
Top 10 Major Skills: Two handed/Stealth/Archery/Light Armor. That's mostly all I'm focusing on right now. No crafting skills or magic at all.
Criminal History: 40 bounty for stealing something by accident, paid off and nothing else as of yet.
Allegiances: Imperial
Factions: Imperial? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the difference between this question and the above. Imperials, Companions, and Bard's College are all at the moment.
Horseback or on foot?: I use the horse as a meatshield. If I can't sneak into a for I'll just ride the horse right in the middle and let him go wild. Usually travel on foot, no fast travel.
Do you spend more time in towns/villages/cities, or adventuring/questing/wandering the wild?: Most of the time spent is between towns on the road, or in the wild.
Do you organize and/or manage your inventories at homes?: Yes.
Do you keep items that you never plan on using?: Well, I always plan on using everything, but if I were to be honest, there's a lot I just will never get around to. So I guess I hoard things needlessly at times.
Do you pay attention to encumberment on a regular basis?: Yes. Can't stand it, so I always check when picking items up if I'm close. If I am I start only taking gold and lockpicks.
Priorities(Gold, loot, quests, relationships, etc.)?: Relationships, Gold, Loot, Quests, in that order.
How do you get what you want from a NPC?: Usually telling the truth, and hope it works, if not persuade. I've only tried to intimidate once and it didn't even work, haha. I'm really usually more laid back IRL, so my character tends to reflect that with his dialogue.
A lone friendly traveler is encountered in the wild, how do you approach him/her?: Talk to them first to see if there's something I can do for them or barter with them. I only attack if they attack me, or are just plain rude.
The same lone traveler is non-threatening, yet hostile(possibly of another allegiance or faction)?: If they're hostile I will kill them. I may burn bridges.
Does apparel/armor aesthetics, practicality, value, or rarity determine use?: Yes. I would rather use the hide or leather armors than the higher stat armors, just because I like the way they look better, and fit much more on my character than some fancy armor that nobody else has.
Do you prefer purchasing equipment or finding/looting/stealing/discovering for use?: Usually just loot it. I haven't stolen anything in the game except for by accident.
Do you learn more about your quests, NPCs, and faction before undertaking quests?: Yes. I read the books, talk to the people, etc. I try to fully develop my character and his surroundings in my imagination before I go doing the quests.
Do allegiances, morals and beliefs, or other factors determine who you work for/with and the tasks you perform?: Yes. Very much so. As much I think the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guild is really cool, I just can't see myself being a member. It's the antithesis to my character.
When you have companions, do you let them do most of the work?: They usually tank for me. I have light armor so I don't go crashing into enemies, I sneak around and send my companion in first, then the combat, after my stealth opening, is pretty much even between us, as long as they can take the hits I can't, we make a good team.
Do you equip them with improved equipment, or let them use what they have?: I usually try to have them up to par with myself at least. They're needed to keep me from getting swamped, so the better they are at that, the better I am at what I do.
Do you have them carry most of your burden(ex. loot, weapons, armor, etc.)?: Only when I get encumbered. Then I divide it up so I can keep going. But usually I go straight to a place to sell the junk soon afterwards. I don't like either of our inventories being clogged.
Does it bother you when NPCs say bad things about you?: Depends on the NPC. When it's children, no. They're just being obnoxious as kids sometimes are. When it's guards, yes. It reminds me of bad experiences with officers who use their position of power in a negative light.
If any of those NPCs were to travel outside of civilization, what would you do, if anything?: If it's a guard, I'd probably kill them. Anyone else, I might just hit, or even just ignore, depending on who they are.
Do you give up on difficult quests? Do you plan better for a new approach? Do you see it through, no matter how difficult?: I usually keep trying. I will try different strategies, try to better use my environment to help me out (maybe back them into a trap, or if there's a lot drag them into a small corridor so it's only one at a time, etc.) If there's just no way I see it working out, I make a note and go back later.
Do you interact with NPCs other than for essential needs, wants, or tasks?: Sometimes. I walk near them just to hear their banter, and I listen tot heir conversations sometimes. It helps get a fell of what's going on in the world.
Do you lie - when it is an option - to receive a greater reward or information?: No. That wouldn't really fit with my character or moral standing.
Do you enjoy learning about the land and people of Skyrim and the history of Tamriel?: Very much so. I've read every in game book since Daggerfall, and am working on the Skyrim ones now.
Does listening to a NPC's story affect any decisions you make?: Yes. I like to hear both sides of the story before acting on it. A lot of moral decisions in the game aren't black and white, but shades of gray. So getting NPC opinion on a matter is best for a clear judgement.
Do you think you could be a better leader than any of the guild/faction leaders. How about the Jarls or even a King?: Some of the Jarls, yes. A king? Probably not. The power might be great, but I really don't think I'd want the stress that would come with being a good king.
Things aren't going your way, do you turn off the game, or do you revert to a previous save to try again?: No. I try to deal with it and move on. For me, immersion and all the work I put into character development goes down the drain if I just give up when things get rough. That is the nature of the game, for things to get tough in places. I just try to deal with it and move on.
How do you view the zoomorphic races? Elves? Humans?: Personally can't play a zoomorphic or elven race, as it doesn't feel "real" enough for me. Too fantastic, IMO. But as far as them in the game, I like the diversity of culture and races. One of the best aspects of lore is learning about the different cultures of those strange races. I have no problem teaming up with one if they're good at what they do, and what they do is needed.
Do you perform tasks in your own way, or to-the-letter?: I guess my own way. I like to problem solve, and the feeling of freedom is great. So I usually just do things as they come, and however seems best for me and my character.
Stormcloaks or Imperial Legion?: Legion. This is another grey area. Both sides have created and been part of atrocities, even bordering on genocide in some areas. However, I remember playing the other games, the Legion was a free empire. All races co-existed and lived under the Empire, there were even high ranking officials of different races when the empire was at full strength. While they have their bad, I see Ulfric as power hungry and arrogant. I believe he is leading the Stormcloaks into a totalitarian government type. They voice their opinions against other races, and I'm not in agreement with that at all. If the Thalmor are to be pushed back, and people regain their freedoms, I believe it will have to be under the Empire. In that light, the lesser of two evils and the greater good, I see it being the Imperial Legion. Even the worship of Talos that has caused such a commotion was available under Empire rule. I believe if they are strengthened and reunited, and can push the Thalmor back out, the restrictions will again be lifted and we''ll see the freedom and co-existence that existed during the Oblivion Crisis.
Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood?: Neither, really. If I had to pick, I'd pick Dark Brotherhood. It's just a sad fact that people need others assassinated, as opposed to working their issues out in any other way, but it seems more like a business that may in some times be useful and even good. The thieves guild, I feel thrives on greed only.
Is marriage more of a business transaction than about affinity for a NPC?: I actually marry the woman I think is the most attractive and least annoying. I dont' really care if they're a business owner or not.
If you use magic, what do you use it for? I never do, just the occasional heal after a fight so I don't have to wait so long for the regen.
If you use stealth, what do you use it for? I use stealth to open up combat. I use a two-handed sword, so I only get one stealth attack, then the rest of the battle is just head to head combat. I like it as an opener, or to get by things I don't want/need to kill.

Before I answer I'd like to know (and I'm sure others do to) why you are doing this study. Are you doing this as part of an educational or professional assignment, or just out of casual curiosity?

Also, what is your hypothesis? Do you have a clear idea of what are you expecting to find? Do you expect the results to correlate or not with that quasi-Freudian concept you described? What else are you looking to determine?

Thanks.

A lone friendly traveler is encountered in the wild, how do you approach him/her?: If they look interesting I talk to them. If not, I ignore them.
The same lone traveler is non-threatening, yet hostile(possibly of another allegiance or faction)?: Depends on my situation - if I'm low on health or potions or in a hurry I avoid them, if not I enter into combat with them. Giants are an exception - I always leave them be, seeing as they always leave you alone if you return the favour.
Does apparel/armor aesthetics, practicality, value, or rarity determine use?: Practicality/stats based always. I may keep rare things as trophies in a house.
Do you prefer purchasing equipment or finding/looting/stealing/discovering for use?: Finding/looting/discovering
Do you learn more about your quests, NPCs, and faction before undertaking quests?: Sometimes
Do allegiances, morals and beliefs, or other factors determine who you work for/with and the tasks you perform?: Depends on what allegiance, moral belief etc. is being brought into question
When you have companions, do you let them do most of the work?: No
Do you equip them with improved equipment, or let them use what they have?: Yes
Do you have them carry most of your burden(ex. loot, weapons, armor, etc.)?: No, they tend to end up with the excess towards the end of a dungeon dive, quest etc.
Does it bother you when NPCs say bad things about you?: Sometimes - depends what it is
If any of those NPCs were to travel outside of civilization, what would you do, if anything?: No
Do you give up on difficult quests? Do you plan better for a new approach? Do you see it through, no matter how difficult?: Either plan better next time, or try to see it through if possible (I don't like lowering the difficulty though)
Do you interact with NPCs other than for essential needs, wants, or tasks?: Sometimes but not often - I'm RPing, so it would be odd if my character ran up to everyone they saw to initiate conversation.
Do you lie - when it is an option - to receive a greater reward or information?: I have lied when it seemed like the right thing to do. Not just for personal gain though.
Do you enjoy learning about the land and people of Skyrim and the history of Tamriel?: Yes
Does listening to a NPC's story affect any decisions you make?: Yes
Do you think you could be a better leader than any of the guild/faction leaders. How about the Jarls or even a King?: Yes
Things aren't going your way, do you turn off the game, or do you revert to a previous save to try again?: Depends on lots of factors - what the problem is, how long I've been playing for, what else I've got to do that day etc.
How do you view the zoomorphic races? Elves? Humans?: I view them as character types in a videogame, each with their own lore and history.
Do you perform tasks in your own way, or to-the-letter?: Depends on the task and what the "to-the-letter" way is. Also, many quests are quite limited in how you can complete them.
Stormcloaks or Imperial Legion?: Not made a decision yet, but it seems Legion is maybe edging forward a bit.
Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood?: Thieves Guild
Is marriage more of a business transaction than about affinity for a NPC?: Neither - NPCs are too shallow for it to be interesting, so I guess that might mean affinity - although there's no affinity there as far as I can see. If it was better implemented then it would be affinity based on my character's personality.
If you use magic, what do you use it for? Destruction mainly.
If you use stealth, what do you use it for? To avoid being seen

Thanks.
The study is for an undergraduate educational assignment in psychology. Some of my motivation is curiosity.

I am expecting the results to correlate somewhat with the idea that the id - the unconscious part of our personalities that works to satisfy basic urges, needs, and desires - will shine through in many answers and responses. This is hypothesized based on the concept that in large open-world games full of freedom of choice players tend to put 'themselves' into the game. I am also going to attempt finding instances where predicted personality traits based on information provided as a whole conflict with certain answers and responses; leading me to argue that the super-ego may be at play. This is expected, as we all tend to want some of ourselves kept secret to 'save face', even when we feel we have been forward in an anonymous setting. Of course, there is margin for error, and I will likely be wrong in predictions. This is part of the learning process for me, and my peers, so all will not be lost.

I, again, appreciate all help in this endeavor.

P.S. I will also pay attention to demographics, and breakdown how race, gender, age, education, et al. factor into how people play games like Skyrim.
