Resetting Perks. Yes or No?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 7:06 am

Well I also wish to add another reason why I wish for Perk Resets... There are so many builds in Skyrim that I myself and I guess a lot of people want to try out (Pure Mage, Pure Warrior, Pure Thief, Mage/Warrior, Thief/Mage, etc...), and it's a bit ridiculous why we have to reset just to try it out. I some who are reasoning out that it would ruin the RPG... but how could it ruin the RPG if YOU yourself are the one making that decision? YOU have the "OPTION" to choose if you want to reset it or not. I also see some people saying that this is an RPG, while it is... you guys are forgetting one of the most important letters in those 3 words. the letter "G". It's a GAME!

It's not a multi-player game that affects other people, it only affects how YOU play. Seriously, are people this terrified of having a simple option that merely resets Perks? Are you that terrified that you would actually use that option? If you are truly against it, then you wouldn't use it.

Not a complete reset, but perhaps maybe 1-5 points that you can get back. this helps in case you put a point into something that you nolonger wished to seek

I don't see any problem with changing perks, especially if you keep to the same archetype of character (not changing from bow to magic, etc etc). I for one regret choosing any lock picking perks and plan to change them as soon as a mod is made available.

It's not that big of a deal. If you're on the pc you already can with console commands, and I'd imagine a respec mod will be among the first released once the modding tools are released.

I say no.

I don't think you should be able to change your perks. If that were possible, we could just change our perks to change who we are at will. It defeats the purpose of picking the perks in the first place.

... Yeah. This. We can't elaborate on a statement that pretty much covers our reasoning. So we just quote it.

To be fair, they really should have made the intro a bit shorter. Having to make a new character if you want to try different perks seems best to me, but having to sit through that overly long and dramatic intro each time is kind of a bother.

Can't wait for an "Alternative Start" mod for Skyrim.

Needs a quest or an npc who'll "magic" those perks right out of alteration... for a price of course... then just pickpocket it back...

Totally agree with people saying yes I for one am losing interest because I've got my perks so wrong and I'm not starting again when I've invested 35 hours into it... plus I've horded like 100k of stuff in my house to hell with robbing all those people again...

There's nothing wrong with that. In Skyrim you are a humanoid, humans have the ability to learn multiple things, I don't understand why there's a limit, especially for a game that advertises "Freedom".

NO.

That would be the final nail in the coffin of an already dumbed down levelling system. I mean really  if you can just reset your perks at any time, what's the point?

Can't you just go into the console (PC version) and reset them yourself?

Yes, since the character depends entirely on perks, a wrong decision early can make the game harder unnecessarily (and for those that said that you should choose the talent carefully, not every does, some people are more compulsive than others... PLUS just because the choice is there doesn't mean you have to take it... if you're dead set on perks shouldn't be resetable then don't use the option >.>).

To change perks with console command:

Search for the perks code here:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Skills

Then in the console (press the ~ button), use the command player.addperk perkID or player.removeperk perkID. And of course instead of perkID, you type the actual ID of the perk.

When you do it like this you don't get the perk points back so you have to use the player.addperk command for any perks you remove to keep the same number of perk points.

I really don't care if people want to exploit something in their own single player game to make themselves OP. I used the console command on my mage character to change a couple of perks I put in archery early on before I decided I wanted to go full mage. But restarting a character to do exactly the same thing just to change 2 perks is not something that appeals to me. If i'm gonna start a new character it's going to be something completely different, doing different quests, otherwise I'd just get dead bored repeating the 40 hours of gameplay I've already put in.

Might be best to just leave it as a console command though.

I wondered how long before someone would bring up respecing. I am still amazed that RPG games STILL don't allow for it. And the diehards think adding the option will somehow ruin the game... or you should "choose wisely"...

If respec is an option... how does that affect you if you don't choose to use it?

So you are saying the game is perfect and that any choice I make is acceptable? All the perks work as described and there are no wrong choices?

Oh lord, it's like Diablo 3 all over again.

Yes, reset perks. It would of course be optional. I don't care what other people do or don't do. I have self-control; if I don't want to use the perk reset, I won't.

i could write a psychological profile on you from this one statement and it would be almost 99.3% accurate :)

It doesn't make his statement any less valid however.

perks should unlock automatically when your skill level requirement is filled. this just feels ripped off of fallout.

I see a lot of people wanting and some people disliking the option to resetting perks. So I just want to make a thread that will focus on the discussion on why or why not resetting perks should be allowed.

I voted no because picking perks is one of the few major strategy aspects to game. I know the younger generation are used to playing run and gun multiplayer games which use little strategy, thought or planning. Being able to reset would take most of the thought out of the game. Live with your decisions or start over.

That's a stupid argument. You can't learn without making a few mistakes and everyone is going to make a few when it comes to selecting perks the first time through. Also, re-selecting perks takes more thought than selecting them in the first place. You have to review your missteps and think about which perks will best suit the play-style you've adopted after many hours into the game. Not everyone has the time to start over, if you're so adamant about not resetting perks, than don't do it but some people would really appreciate being able to play and make mistakes and getting immersed without having to do thorough research about the game before, and during, playing it.

Can't you just go into the console (PC version) and reset them yourself?

The problem with this is that if you look through the sales chart of Skyrim in the last few days, you can see that over 80% are X-Box and Ps3 Users. And it's safe to assume that lots of people are really annoyed by the fact you can't reset Perks.

I would like the option to change them at some point. Not whenever you want and for free, but a couple of opportunities to clean up your build as you learn new things would be nice.

Many perks end up being useless for reasons you have no legitimate way of knowing until it's too late. For instance, the perks that lets you dual cast summoning spells to increase their duration. Unless you magically figure out that the last tier of summons is permanent before investing in it you just wasted a perfectly good perk point. It's stupid.

Game needs SOME way to do this.

I have perks spent in places I wish I didn't spend. Some quest or even a 1-time only reset would be very nice.
