Resident Experts

Post » Sun Feb 16, 2014 4:21 am

One of the best/coolest things about communities, be they Internet forums or local neighbourhoods, is that most people have a deep understanding of a specific subject, trade, or skill. Especially when part of this person's reputation is being very helpful with this subject. So, what would others, RL and Internet friends alike, say you are a "resident expert" on? Do you find yourself helping others with your specific knowledge and skills at times? How big a part is it of your reputation in various social circles?

In RL my expertise changes on the given situation. Normally I'm pretty fun to be around I love making people laugh, combine that with some acting ability and I'm the "Funny guy". But people also refer to me acting very "mom-like" despite the fact that I'm a 17 year old man, but that comes from the fact that I keep my friends out of trouble and I can cook, clean, sew etc. and have used these skills in various situations.

Music and history, I think. I study history at university and I consider myself fairly competent in the period from 700-1400. When it comes to music I play a number of different instruments and I study a lot of music theory. I also listen to everything from Ancient greek music to Avicii, and besides particularly obscure bands and artists there are not a whole lot of periods, movements and genres I'm not at least somewhat familiar with.

I know a little bit about everything, but music and history is my [censored].

This is such a temptation for my vanity, because I love being a "know-it-all". I will take up a trivia challenge in a lot of different areas. All kinds of popular culture, scientific, political and philosophy topics. I will tell you what I think about almost anything, but that doesn't mean you will agree or even care. I just like to understand systems of all kinds. But this gets me addicted to internet arguments.

I am the resident expert of uselessness. No skill or talent of much recognition. Don't got much to give out, either. I'm just a gargoyle whose eyes are hard and if given too much attention, especially in a mocking way, you can hear the faint grinding of teeth.
