Resistance to ?

So, there are different types of resistances, and most are rather self explanatory, however, the one I'm not sure about is Resistance to Magic. Is this a resistance that has, say a 30%, chance of negating/reflecting all spells cast on you, or does it absorb 30% of dmg taken from spells? And how about spells that to not do dmg? In that case you can't block 30% of the dmg, but it's rather an "all or nothing" effect?

If so, does Magic Resistance not automatically trump any other kind of resistance? It works against fire, frost, shock, illusions etc., whereas a shield with Fire Resistance 30% only protects you against fire.

Wouldn't you ALWAYS choose Magic Resistance over any other resistance?

Just trying to get an idea of how this all works =/

Yes,magic resistance is agaisn't all kinds of magic. This is why bretons have 25% resistance to magic.if they were like Nords(that have 50% resistance to frost) they would be undestructible.Normaly an enchanted item will have less "magic" resistance over another enchanted item that have resistance agaisn't "frost"(for example,my neckacle have 5% magic resistance over another that have 30% of resistance agaisn't fire)

Resistance to magic just effects spell damage as far as I can see, I do not think it protects you against certain spell effects but it's hard to test since barely anything in this game uses enfeebling effects :(. Atronach, or the spell absorb effects I believe can absorb special effects tho, including diseases.

Elemental resistance enchantments are higher than magicka resistance enchantments. That's why you'd choose elemental. Ideally, however, with level 100 Enchanting and a full set of gear, you'd utilize both for *near 100% magicka damage absorption.

Yes, that is why Magic Resistance is usually given in about half of the increments or less than elemental resistances are.

Alright, so that's fair enough on the lower percentages for Magic Resistance, but does it really only protect against damaging magic, not against something like Frenzy or Paralyze for instance?

That's probably what makes Destruction magic so useless, according to all the threads currently going on about it.

What's this "instead of"? I try to to increase magic resistance *and* specific elemental resistances. They're not mutually exclusive. I mean, for enchanting gear, you might go with resist magic, but then on top of the enchanted gear, you might drink a potion of resist frost or resist shock, etc depending on the enemy you're fighting.

for some people, patch 1.2 broke resistances, so some people (myself included) have no resistance to anything (magik, frost, disease, ect...)

Yeah, but I play a non-magic user character, so I'll only use a ring and a necklace probably, which puts a limit on it.

Do the agent of mara quest, that's a free 15% magic resistance right there.
