Resizing the CK windows? They're too big.

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 11:16 am

The various windows in the CK are frigging huge!

I can't see half the options on so many of the windows and i don't see a way to resize them either. Previewing an actors animations for instance is a nightmare, I can only see a tiny strip of the render window in the actor palette. No resize handles anywhere. I'm able to drag the windows around of course, but they don't resize, so I'm left looking at windows that seem to be cut off.

Are there any predefined layouts I can select? Or a way to resize the various editor windows? the only windows i seem to be able to resize are just the object, cell and the initial render window.

Seems like this thing was designed for widescreen or multi (ick) monitors only, it's near impossible to use like this :(

Most of the editor's dialogs cannot be resized. The preview/actor windows can be made larger though.

I've used http://www.digitallis.co.uk/pc/ResizeEnable/ for a long time to resize windows/dialogs that normally can't be resized. It is a very hacky hack, and it may look a little old, but I use it on Win7 with no issues. (I've used it extensively with the GECK.) I always use it to make windows larger though; how well it works to make windows smaller will likely depend on the layout and contents of the window in question.

Incidentally I happen to have a multi-monitor setup myself and find it very useful in doing many kinds of work.

I tried this, it works with the Actor preview, but not correctly with the Package and Aliases windows. The windows are resizable but i still can't click some buttons on the bottom.

Does it really work for you guys ?

That's pretty much how it works on my end too - I believe that's as good as it gets.

Aaah ... Sad that it doesn't work. Now I think i will buy a new screen, as it seems to be the only solution.

As I said, it's fairly hacky. I've found that if you just grab and resize a window all in one go you will often lose some buttons outside the viewable area of the window. However if you first resize it a minute amount - the smallest you can manage - and let go, then grab and resize it all the way, you'll usually get much better results.

That said, I haven't tried it with the CK yet.

I've tried the ResizeEnable program to see if that would help, but it didn't work with the actor window. It was able to make the window larger vertically but wouldn't work horizontally. I really hope they add a fix for this it's impossible to do what I want with the CK when I can't even see the entire window.

ive got almost the same problem, except dragging the window around doesnt help because for some reason it wont let me move presently viewable parts of the window (top half in my case) off screen so i can see whats on the bottom half. Whats worse is that there seems to be a very IMPORTANT button down on the bottom half of the window called "OK" button in the wiki that you have to press to save changes you've made during editing =( Im using a 32" HD tv for my computer monitor so i dont see how size would be an issue at all, my resolution is 1360 * 768 . Anyone care to share what their working resolution for the CK is? If im lucky maybe i can switch my current resolution to one that works while working with the CK

I believe the minimum spec for the CK says 1280x1024, I can't remember where I found that value at the moment though.

This problem is why I haven't even tried using the "Quest Alias" solution for making global references (That, and I don't want to have to put a quest in the player's journal just so he can use a dang spell!) - the "OK" button on the alias dialog is unclickably off the bottom of the screen.

my monitor is set to 1280x1024 and I can only see about 75% of the Magic Effect edit window. Thats the only one where the ok button is cut off. There are other windows that don't fit horizontally but I can drag them around to access all their buttons, unlike the complete fail Magic Effect Window.

I've found that if I can't see the buttons, hitting Enter will click ok and hitting Esc will click cancel.

The Magic Effect window is only 1012 pixels wide and 792 pixels high. If you can't see that in its entirety on a 1280x1024 screen than I wonder what your taskbar looks like.

EDIT resize enable does allow me to reduce the size of the Magic Effect window and the Quest Alias window, everything is cramped but it works.

I call that they start putting these important buttons in the middle of windows! :P

Joking aside... CK has made me aware that I need to upgrade my monitor because my max resolution available atm is 1360x768. This totally svcks. Interestingly, CK is the only application I came across that has higher resolution requirement that what my monitor can provide.

As it stands right now I have to tab through the options to the OK button because sometimes just hitting enter doesn't do anything. I can see the OK button briefly when I drag the window all the way up but it drops back down when I release the mouse button.. at least I can see if I tabbed all the way to the OK button. Ugh.... :stare:

Either I'm losing my mind or they've changed the quest window. I couldn't see the Ok button last night now I can see the Ok button just fine! I still can't see all of the actor window though.

I have the same problem, with reaching the "Ok" buttons on many windows. I'm on a laptop and attaching another screen is a problem, although possible. I'm at the highest resolution, hoping Bethesda will resize the windows.

Lol... that's were I got stuck. Well I'm glad I'm not the only one with this 'windows too big for their boots screen' problem. Looks like I'll be playing around with my laptops resolution - failing that, pulling out the ol' LCD.

Hi guys. I had the same problem with the Quest Alias window on my laptop with widescreen. Now I'm at work and looking for a solution and don't have the CK with me. I found this litle tool: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/get-the-linux-altwindow-drag-functionality-in-windows/ that allows me to move the explorer window for example and lets it stay with it's top outside the screen. It works in Windows 7.
Anyone with the CK would please give it a try and let us know if allows you to access the buttons at buttom of large windows like Quest Alias, as I sayed I'm at work and don't have the CK.
Hope it helps.

Edit: got to test it myself and it realy works for me. Able to reach everything in the Quest Alias window.
